Suspected Deputy Killer Armando Garcia Arrested in Mexico
A fugitive captured by Mexican police in the 2002 slaying of a Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy could be extradited in the next two months, and prosecutors plan to seek a life sentence, the district attorney said Friday. Mexican authorities arrested Jorge Arroyo Garcia Thursday in the city of Tonala in western Jalisco state, according to a statement from the U.S. embassy in Mexico City. Los Angeles County District Attorney Steve Cooley said in an interview with The Associated Press that prosecutors want to seek the death penalty. But they can't because of a 1978 treaty between the United States and Mexico that allows Mexico to deny extradition if a person faces the death penalty. "I'd flip the switch," Cooley said in an interview. Arroyo Garcia, a Mexican national who also goes by the first name Armando, is the lead suspect in the shooting death of Los Angeles County sheriff's Deputy David March, 33, during a traffic stop in Irwindale, Calif., in April 2002. - (Newsroom) - (crime) - (Invasion!)

  Three Mount Vernon men were arrested Saturday night after alleged sexual misconduct with two 14-year-old girls in the parking lot of Bellis Fair mall. Francisco Santos Villanueva, 28, and Melvin Mejia-Villanueva, 20, were booked into jail on suspicion of thirddegree rape of a child. The third man, 18-year-old Oscar Bautista-Bautista, was booked on suspicion of complicity to third-degree rape of a child.

• Mexican brothers accused in gang-rape plead not guilty
  TROY -- Two brothers who allegedly ambushed a female college student behind a downtown bar in 2004 pleaded not guilty through an interpretor at their arraignment in Rensselaer County Court this morning. Heder Roblero, 26, and Wisner Roblero, 25, both Mexican citizens who do not speak English, were arraigned before Judge Patrick McGrath after being indicted last week on charges of rape and attempted rape, unlawful imprisonment and criminal possession of forged instruments. They were allegedly found in possession of forged alien identification cards. The pair, along with Ausel Ovideo Gonzalez, 29, also a Mexican citizen, were allegedly drunk at 3 a.m. on Oct. 29, 2004, when authorities say they walked through the Church Street alley behind the Ruck bar at 118 Third St., heading to their apartment. There, police say, they came across a 24-year-old Russell Sage College student who had stepped out of the bar's rear door to talk on her cellphone.   Andrez Crosby, 36, has been charged with rape, kidnapping and gross sexual imposition in the assault that occurred on Aug. 16 in a house on Parkhill Avenue, near Woodland Hill Park. A black man who took hostages in a bar and told the patrons that "white people are going to burn tonight"
was convicted Thursday of attempted murder, assault and other crimes. AIDS-infected Steven Johnson, 39, showed no emotion after the jury, which deliberated a week, found him guilty of more than 50 crimes, some of them designated hate crimes that are punished more severely than other offenses. Johnson invaded Bar Veloce, in Manhattan'sEast Village area, while nine men and six women were inside early June 16, 2002. He was carrying three pistols, a samurai sword and a container of kerosene. He warned, "White people are going to burn tonight." He later told police he left the housing project in Brooklyn where he lived and took a subway train to the East Village, where he looked for "happy" white people to avenge the mistreatment of black people. He shot and wounded three people, including a police officer, and sprayed kerosene on several customers and threatened to set them on fire. Two women caught Johnson off guard and tackled him, and a policeman shot him. Sentencing was set for March 21.
