Laurence E. Lovejoy is accused of forever silencing his stepdaughter so she would not testify he raped her
Laurence E. LovejoyNearly three years after her murder, the 16-year-old girl's words still were heard in a DuPage County courtroom. A jury read Erin Justice's written police statement Wednesday in which she alleges Lovejoy attacked her March 3, 2004, in their former Naperville apartment. "I say, in tears, 'No, Laurence. Don't do this to me,' " the teen wrote. "I was screaming. He places his hands over my mouth and I said, 'OK. I promise I won't scream anymore.' I just looked up at the ceiling and cried." Prosecutors said Lovejoy killed Erin 24 days later, March 27, to avoid prosecution. She was poisoned and stabbed - both wrists sliced to suggest suicide - and drowned a bathtub in the family's new townhouse at 362 Park Ridge Lane in Aurora. - (Newsroom) - (crime)

8 arrested in 1971 cop-killing tied to Black Panthers
Sgt. John V. YoungSAN FRANCISCO - Eight men with ties to a militant black power group were arrested today in the brazen 1971 killing of a San Francisco policeman, part of what authorities described as a five-year campaign to assassinate law enforcement officers in California and New York. Most of the men were former members of the Black Liberation Army, a violent offshoot of the Black Panther Party, according to police. On Aug. 29, 1971, two members of the group, armed with guns and dynamite, stormed a police station and fired a shotgun through a hole in the lobby s bulletproof glass, killing Sgt. John V. Young, 51, and wounding a civilian clerk. Authorities said the killing was one in a series of attacks by BLA members on law enforcement officials on both coasts. Carried out between 1968 and 1973, the campaign also included the bombing of a police funeral in San Francisco and the slayings of two New York City police officers, as well as three armed bank robberies that helped fund their operations, police said. - (Newsroom) - (crime) - (Black-on-white)

  • Convicted Cop Killers Charged In Murder Of Third Officer
Two men convicted of killing two NYPD officers 35 years ago were arrested again Tuesday, this time in connection with the death of a San Francisco police sergeant at around the same time. Police say Herman Bell (left) and Anthony Bottom were arrested in prison. The two stand accused of murdering Sergeant John Young back in August of 1971. Young was shot during a raid at his police station, just three months after NYPD officers Waverly Jones and Joseph Piagentini were shot to death in East Harlem. Both Bell and Bottom are serving life sentences for the killings. Six others, including a man from Queens, are also charged in Young's death. Investigators say the killings may have been part of a plan by the Black Liberation Army to kill law enforcement officers in New York and California.

  • Multiple Arrests Made In BLA Takedown
Ronald BridgeforthThree decades after members of the Black Liberation Army stormed the Ingleside police station in San Francisco and killed a sergeant, historic arrests have been made in the case. In the early morning hours of January 23, 2007, multi-agency task forces across the country brought down most of the members police say were involved in the Ingleside attack. Suspected BLA members were arrested in Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, and Panama City, Florida. Six arrests were made and two men who were already serving time in a New York state prison were charged. While police and the FBI are calling the raids that occured almost simultaneously in three states a massive victory, the manhunt continues for one man -- suspected getaway driver Ronald Bridgeforth. Ronald Bridgeforth, 62, is still being sought and could be in France, Belize or Tanzania, police said.

2004 rape and beating draws 46 years to life for Spanish-speaking day laborer Raul Salvador Marin
Raul Salvador MarinSurvivor: Jane Doe, who gave the Register permission to use her photo but not her name, and her mother after the trial.A slender young woman rose on unsteady legs and told a judge through quivering lips Friday that the man who sexually assaulted her, beat her with a rock and left her for dead should be put away for the rest of his life. The 23-year-old Massachusetts woman – identified in court as Jane Doe – cannot remember anything about being chased down a dirt path in Trabuco Canyon in June 2004, or about being attacked amid scrub brush and cacti. She told Orange County Superior Court Judge that because of her ordeal, she is no longer confident in life and is still recovering from her injuries. And then she sat back in the courtroom gallery, where she was comforted by her mother, as the judge sentenced Raul Salvador Marin, 33, to 46-years-to-life in prison. Marin, a day laborer who admitted the attack, sat quietly a few feet away listening to the proceedings through a Spanish-speaking interpreter. The judge Hoffer said the beating demonstrated a "high degree of cruelty and viciousness," and that Marin would be a "very old man" if he ever became eligible for parole. - (Newsroom) - (crime)

Ricky Jovan Gray - or Gevon GrayRay Joseph DandridgeBryan HarveyStella and RubyKathry Harvey and daughter RubyOn New Year's Day, friends arriving for a chili party at Bryan and Kathryn Harvey's Richmond home found the house on fire. The bodies of the couple and their daughters, 9-year-old Stella and 4-year-old Ruby, were found in the basement, bound in duct tape, beaten, their throats cut. Five days later, three members of another Richmond family were found killed in the same way. Mason recognized one of the victims as the woman who helped rob him. Ricky Jovan Gray, (aka 'Gevon') '29, faces trial Monday in the Harvey slayings, and his nephew, Ray Joseph Dandridge, 29, is to stand trial next month in the killings of Percyell Tucker, 55, his wife, Mary Baskerville-Tucker, 47, and her daughter, Ashley Baskerville, 21.     Skull Found in creek ID'd as 5-year-old White girl Emily Rimel - kidnaped, raped and murdered by black
A skull found in a creek earlier this week has been identified as that of a five-year-old columbus-area girl who disappeared a year and a-half ago. Investigators have identified the remains of Emily Rimel through DNA. Emily was last seen at her home early in the morning on December 7th, 2004. Two people fishing found the skull on Tuesday. The Coroner ays there was trauma to the skull. With confirmation that the remains are those of Emily Rimel, the prosecutor's office can move ahead with plans to seek murder charges against the main suspect.
Lindsay Bruce, is serving a 10-year sentence after he was convicted of kidnapping Rimel in December 2004. At the time, Bruce was not charged with murder. While Ohio law does not require the presence of a corpse to charge someone in a homicide, doing so without a body does raise the chances that a jury could acquit. O'Brien says this could easily become a death penalty case based on several factors, including Rimel's age. Over the next few weeks, reports will be written state crime lab investigators and the county coroner's office. Those reports, says O'Brien, will be added to the information already at hand and submitted to the Franklin County grand jury with the goal of charging Bruce with one count of murder. - (Newsroom) - (crime) - (Black-on-White)

Black Sex Offender Charged With Kidnap-Rape-Kill of White 11-year-old Jacksonville Girl In 1996
Robert Shelton Mitchell Fla. -- A Connecticut sex offender will be returned to Florida to face a murder charge after being linked to the decade-old rape and drowning of an 11-year-old girl through a database of DNA from convicted sex offenders. Robert Shelton Mitchell, 43, was being held on a $5 million bond after being arraigned as a fugitive. He will face first-degree murder and capital sexual battery charges in the death of Cherie Morrisette of Jacksonville. The Mandarin Middle School student body was found on Dec. 8, 1996, floating in the St. John's River about 10 miles south of the  apartment she shared with her mother and sister.   An autopsy determined that Cherie drowned shortly after her disappearance on Dec. 2, 1996, and was alive when she either fell into the river or was thrown in. Police labeled the death suspicious, and authorities found a small DNA sample on her underwear and body. Mitchell lived in nearby Middleburg at the time of the girl's death, police said Thursday. Mitchell later moved to Connecticut and was convicted in January 2003 of illegal sexual contact with another child. - (Black-on-White)
