Suspect Who Kidnaped and Raped White Female Lawyer Escapes Ala. Prison A man charged in the videotaped kidnapping of a female lawyer who was grabbed at gunpoint outside her downtown loft has escaped from prison, possibly with help, authorities said Friday. Authorities tried using tracking dogs to hunt for Dedrick Griham, but they lost his scent at a road outside the lockup. Officials said they did not know where he was headed. Griham, who has a long criminal record and apparently was out on parole by mistake at the time of the abduction, is accused of rape, sodomy and robbery in the May 31 kidnapping, which was captured by a parking lot surveillance camera as the lawyer got out of her car. The abduction drew wide notice as the videotape, which shows a man approaching and pushing her inside before driving off, was aired on cable television a short time after it occurred. The woman's ordeal ended that afternoon when she was rescued from a motel room where law officers said she had been held against her will. The woman, whose isn't being named because of the sex-assault charges, was not in her law office but was safe Friday, a firm employee said. - (Newsroom) - (crime) - (Black-on-white) Ref: White female Birmingham attorney found safe after abduction, black suspect held The ordeal began early in the morning, when witnesses say they saw a gunman force a family law attorney back into the Lexus she was driving. Then, they sped away. It ended nine hours later, when authorities found 34-year-old Sandra Eubank Gregory at a Comfort Inn motel a few miles away. |

Two Wendy's employees were found dead around 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon. Officers say they were alerted of the problem when a manager, who went to check on the restaurant after it did not open Sunday, found 53-year-old Carlaus Eugenia Johnson and 29-year-old Latora Michelle Bolton shot to death in a back office. Portee was the third employee scheduled to come into work that day. They say they were able to track him down to his home. Pastor indicted in "lesbian demon" rape case FORT WORTH -- A 63-year-old pastor accused of raping a church member last year during a ceremony to cast out demons has been indicted by a Tarrant County grand jury. Leonard Ray Owens, who is free on $25,000 bail, is now awaiting trial on a charge of sexual assault -- a second-degree felony punishable by two to 20 years in prison. Police have said that they began investigating Owens last year after a 22-year-old woman reported that Owens raped her on two occasions at his Fort Worth home. The woman told police that, several months after she began attending the Prayer House of Faith she went to Owens' home for counseling after having a miscarriage. There, the woman told police, Owens said she had a sex spirit and lesbian demon inside her that he needed to cast out. The pastor then asked her to lie on the floor and began yelling at her as if she were a demon, saying "Loose her in the name of Jesus," according to an arrest warrant affidavit. The woman told police that Owens pulled down her pants as he called for the demons to come out. When she tried to get up, he pushed her down, the affidavit said. The pastor then began to fight with her as if she were a demon before climbing on top of her, pinning her down and raping her, police have said. Afterward, Owens, a self-proclaimed prophet, ordered her to wash her face in the name of Jesus and to read Psalm 105:15, which says to do no harm to prophets, the woman told police. The woman told police that Owens raped her again a month later, after he asked her come to his house to pray for another woman. - (Newsroom) - (crime) |

Chance DNA swab leads to arrest Sex crimes detectives Mark Chambers and Rick Noble were prowling for suspects in several home invasion attacks. About 1 a.m. the plainclothes officers spotted a man leaning into an automobile, talking to a woman inside. He didn't resemble their prey so they coasted on, police said, soon to see him running after their unmarked car. They told him to go, but he insisted they take an oral swab of him too, police said, to prove his innocence. Just to get rid of him, they complied. The man did not cross their minds again, especially since a suspect was arrested a few days later and confessed to the crimes. The police lab delivered a twist: The man who insisted upon the DNA test turned out to match an unrelated rape case from six years before. On March 28, 2000, a 42-year-old woman fell asleep in her car and awoke to find a man raping her, police said. Detectives said they never came up with a suspect - until they were chased down in June by that non-suspect, Christopher Swift. Swift, 30, now awaits trial on charges of rape, sodomy, kidnapping, second-degree robbery and felonious restraint. - (crime) |

Skull Found in creek ID'd as 5-year-old White girl Emily Rimel - kidnaped, raped and murdered by black A skull found in a creek earlier this week has been identified as that of a five-year-old columbus-area girl who disappeared a year and a-half ago. Investigators have identified the remains of Emily Rimel through DNA. Emily was last seen at her home early in the morning on December 7th, 2004. Two people fishing found the skull on Tuesday. The Coroner ays there was trauma to the skull. With confirmation that the remains are those of Emily Rimel, the prosecutor's office can move ahead with plans to seek murder charges against the main suspect. Lindsay Bruce, is serving a 10-year sentence after he was convicted of kidnapping Rimel in December 2004. At the time, Bruce was not charged with murder. While Ohio law does not require the presence of a corpse to charge someone in a homicide, doing so without a body does raise the chances that a jury could acquit. O'Brien says this could easily become a death penalty case based on several factors, including Rimel's age. Over the next few weeks, reports will be written state crime lab investigators and the county coroner's office. Those reports, says O'Brien, will be added to the information already at hand and submitted to the Franklin County grand jury with the goal of charging Bruce with one count of murder. - (Newsroom) - (crime) - (Black-on-White) Ref: Black Sentenced For Kidnapping Missing Girl |
Black Sex Offender Charged With Kidnap-Rape-Kill of White 11-year-old Jacksonville Girl In 1996 Fla. -- A Connecticut sex offender will be returned to Florida to face a murder charge after being linked to the decade-old rape and drowning of an 11-year-old girl through a database of DNA from convicted sex offenders. Robert Shelton Mitchell, 43, was being held on a $5 million bond after being arraigned as a fugitive. He will face first-degree murder and capital sexual battery charges in the death of Cherie Morrisette of Jacksonville. The Mandarin Middle School student body was found on Dec. 8, 1996, floating in the St. John's River about 10 miles south of the apartment she shared with her mother and sister. An autopsy determined that Cherie drowned shortly after her disappearance on Dec. 2, 1996, and was alive when she either fell into the river or was thrown in. Police labeled the death suspicious, and authorities found a small DNA sample on her underwear and body. Mitchell lived in nearby Middleburg at the time of the girl's death, police said Thursday. Mitchell later moved to Connecticut and was convicted in January 2003 of illegal sexual contact with another child. - (Black-on-White) |
