Black arrested in shooting death of migrant cabbie SEATTLE (AP) - A trail of pennies led to the home of a teenager charged with killing a taxi driver and setting his cab afire, King County sheriff's deputies said. Earnest Lenell Collins Jr., 18, charged with first-degree murder in the shooting of Jagit Singh, a driver for Farwest Taxi, and his 16-year-old brother, sought on an unrelated fourth-degree assault warrant, were arrested in Chicago and were being held pending extradition, sheriff's Sgt. John Urquhart said. Robbery appeared to be the reason for the killing. Friends and associates told investigators Collins had been losing money gambling with dice at a housing project in Seattle and talked of "jacking someone" or robbing cab drivers to get cash. - (Newsroom) - (crime) |

Prosecutor Appeals After Judge Drops Rape Charges Against Liberian Over Lack of Interpreter  ROCKVILLE, Md. — The prosecutor in the case of a Liberian native charged with repeatedly raping and molesting a 7-year-old girl said Monday that he is filing an appeal of a controversial judge's ruling that dismissed all charges because an interpreter who spoke the suspect's rare West African dialect could not be found. Montgomery County State's Attorney John McCarthy called the ruling last Tuesday by Judge Katherine Savage "improper," adding that his office has "requested that an appeal be taken to reverse the court's order." Savage ruled on July 17 that Mahamu Kanneh, a Liberian who received asylum in the U.S. and attended high school and community college here, was denied a speedy trial after three years awaiting a court-appointed interpreter who could speak the tribal language of Vai. Trial Linked to Black Serial Rapist 'Baseline Killer' Begins PHOENIX -- An accused serial killer tried to obscure his DNA during a sexual assault on two sisters by rubbing dirt on one victim's body, a prosecutor told jurors Monday. But "as much as he tried, he could not hide his DNA," Deputy County Attorney Suzanne Cohen said during opening statements in the trial of former construction worker Mark Goudeau. He is being tried on 19 charges, including sexual assault, all but one stemming from the September 2005 attack on the two sisters. A second trial that includes nine murder counts in which he is accused of being the so-called Baseline Killer has not been scheduled.
