Negro confesses to raping and murdering 85-year-old White woman in 1976
Alfonzo AustinMary Jane BarthFor more than 30 years, the gruesome murder of Mary Jane Barth remained unsolved, one of the department's oldest open cases. She was an 85-year-old retiree who had grown senile and often wandered away from home. On Sept. 17, 1976, police found her facedown inside Greenwood Cemetery. She had been raped and stabbed 27 times. Police worked overtime following leads. But the trail went cold. Then, last year, investigator Brenda Stevenson submitted DNA evidence to the state's crime lab, something police do regularly with cold cases in the hope of getting a break. And they did. Last month, police got word that the DNA from semen on a small piece of Barth's clothing matched a profile in an FBI database: Alfonzo Austin, 58, a convicted sex offender who was living in an apartment just outside Quincy in the Panhandle.     Prosecutor Appeals After Judge Drops Rape Charges Against Liberian Over Lack of Interpreter
Mahamu KannehROCKVILLE, Md. — The prosecutor in the case of a Liberian native charged with repeatedly raping and molesting a 7-year-old girl said Monday that he is filing an appeal of a controversial judge's ruling that dismissed all charges because an interpreter who spoke the suspect's rare West African dialect could not be found. Montgomery County State's Attorney John McCarthy called the ruling last Tuesday by Judge Katherine Savage "improper," adding that his office has "requested that an appeal be taken to reverse the court's order." Savage ruled on July 17 that Mahamu Kanneh, a Liberian who received asylum in the U.S. and attended high school and community college here, was denied a speedy trial after three years awaiting a court-appointed interpreter who could speak the tribal language of Vai. Two undocumented Guatemalans charged with rape in sex with girls, 13 and 15
Jeremias PerezPedro SagastumeTwo undocumented Guatemalans are in jail this morning after Sheriff's investigators charged them with having sex with two underage Putnam County girls. Police said that Pedro Sagastume, 21, and Jeremias Perez, 22, had sex with the girls, ages 13 and 15, inside an apartment the men share at 167 Main St. Although the sex was "consensual", Sagastume, who had relations with the 13-year-old Southeast girl, was charged with second-degree rape while Perez, who had sex with the 15-year-old Brewster girl, was charged with third-degree rape, police said. The charges are felonies. New York state law deems the girls incapable of consenting to sex because of their ages.   • Ethiopian migrant goes berserk 4 Dead, 2 Wounded in Atlanta Shootings
    ATLANTA - A man neighbors described as a retired factory worker shot three relatives to death and wounded two others before killing himself in a southwest Atlanta home on Monday, authorities said. Police had not received calls about family violence at the house before Abdulaziz Ibrahim, 52, gunned down his daughters-in-law Hana Yusuf, 26, and Luna Tesfaye, 24, a police spokesman said. Also killed was Mohammed Ibrahim, 28, the gunman's son and Tesfaye's husband, who died at Grady Memorial Hospital, police spokesman Eric Schwartz said.

    The shooter's 3-year-old grandson, Amir Abdulhakim, and the son of Hana Yusuf and Yusef Ibrahim, was in stable condition Monday afternoon at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston. Yusef Ibrahim, 27, another son, was in stable condition at Grady, police said. Police said they were interviewing the gunman's 26-year-old daughter, who was in the house during the shooting but was unharmed, and his wife, who had left home shortly before the 7 a.m. shootings. Friends and neighbors said the victims were part of an extended Ethiopian family that had immigrated to Atlanta about 10 years ago.   • Texas Gang Raids Yield 121 Arrests - many illegal 'migrants'
    DALLAS -- Federal agents and local police have rounded up more than 100 members of street gangs in raids in North Texas cities, immigration officials announced Monday. More than half of the 121 suspects were arrested on criminal charges, said ICE spokesman Carl Rusnok. The others were taken into custody on administrative, or immigration, violations. Some gang members who were in the country illegally have been deported or are being processed for deportation. Others are being prosecuted for re-entering the United States after deportation, said ICE agent John Chakwin Jr. Those arrested during the seven-day operation were members of 27 gangs, including the Asian Boyz, Latin Kings, Mexican Mafia and MS-13, officials said.

Mark GoudeauPHOENIX -- An accused serial killer tried to obscure his DNA during a sexual assault on two sisters by rubbing dirt on one victim's body, a prosecutor told jurors Monday. But "as much as he tried, he could not hide his DNA," Deputy County Attorney Suzanne Cohen said during opening statements in the trial of former construction worker Mark Goudeau. He is being tried on 19 charges, including sexual assault, all but one stemming from the September 2005 attack on the two sisters. A second trial that includes nine murder counts in which he is accused of being the so-called Baseline Killer has not been scheduled. But on Monday, the 43-year-old was just another inmate in an orange jumpsuit waiting to be sentenced on weapons and drug charges. Patterson was dragged yelling and kicking from the courtroom. Thai migrant suspect in kidnap-rape-murder of another little 10-year-old girl
Terapon AdhahnAdre'Anna JacksonLAKEWOOD, Wash. -- A sex offender suspected in the slaying of 12-year-old Zina Linnik has been named a person of interest in the death of another girl, Adre'Anna Jackson (White/American Indian female), who was found dead in a Pierce County field in 2006. Residents of the Tillicum neighborhood where Adre'Anna lived recognized Terapon Adhahn's photo when police showed it to them, and several said they remembered seeing him in the area around the time she disappeared, Lakewood police Lt. Dave Guttu said Tuesday. "Some have indicated he did quite a few handyman jobs in the area," Guttu said. "We know he was in the area when she disappeared. Now we're just trying to firm up the timeline to the day and the hour." Adre'Anna, 10, was last seen alive when she left for school Dec. 2, 2005. Adhahn is set to be arraigned Monday for the July 4 murder of a 12-year-old Seattle-area girl. He's also charged with several counts of rape against another girl, and is suspected in other attacks on young girls in the Seattle area over a period of several years. One of Adhahn's victims from Washington state told police that he drove a black pickup—just like Amber's abductor did.

Chris CollinsIn May 2004, Chris Collins (Christopher Edward Collins, Jr) and another (black) man were arrested and charged with sexually assaulting an intoxicated 12-year-old girl at a hotel in Texarkana, Tex., during an after-prom party. Two other men were charged in December 2005. Collins pleaded not guilty in March, after being indicted by a grand jury in December 2004. The case has created controversy in Texarkana, a small city of 35,000 on the Arkansas border. Collins and the three other men are black and the girl is white; some black residents have questioned whether the case has racial overtones. DNA collected from the victim’s body implicates all four of the men charged
When questioned by investigators, Aaron Johnson, 27 at the time, and Charles Johnson, then 18, both denied having sex with the victim. They were arrested Dec. 1, 2005, after DNA testing performed by the DPS crime lab in Garland, Texas, allegedly showed they too had sex with the girl. Three days later, police arrested Collins' former Texas High teammate, Jabari Asim Jackson, then 18 years old. He told investigators that he had sex with the girl at the hotel but that he did not realize she was only 12.

    Black Marine convicted of murdering Iraqi civilian gets away with murder
Trent D. ThomasCAMP PENDLETON, Calif. — A Marine who was convicted of kidnapping and conspiring to murder an Iraqi civilian will not serve prison time, a military jury decided Friday. Cpl. Trent Thomas was sentenced to a bad-conduct discharge and reduced pay. He could have received life in prison for his role in the April 2006 killing of the retired Iraqi policeman in the village of Hamdania. Thomas was among seven Marines and a Navy corpsman accused of taking 52-year-old Hashim Ibrahim Awad from his house to a nearby ditch and shooting him after they botched an attempt to capture a suspected insurgent.
