Black Congressman Jefferson Sought Bribes, Indictment Says Representative William J. Jefferson, the Louisiana Democrat at the center of an investigation that included an F.B.I. raid at his Congressional office and accusations that he hid $90,000 in bribe money in his home freezer, was indicted Monday by a federal grand jury on 16 corruption-related felony counts. The 94-page indictment in Virginia, returned after a two-year inquiry, accused Mr. Jefferson of bribery, racketeering, conspiracy, money laundering, obstruction of justice and other offenses. L.I. Black Charged With Impersonating Cop Faces New Charges RIVERHEAD, N.Y. (AP) -- A man previously charged with impersonating a police officer pleaded not guilty Monday to allegations of using that ploy to rape a woman, molest teenagers, scam a bus driver and commit other crimes. Henry Terry, was ordered held without bail. "By invoking a fear of violence and the authority of a badge and uniform, he manipulated these people,'' prosecutor Thomas Spota said. "They had no reason to doubt his ability to follow through on his threats or challenge what they logically interpreted as the legal authority of a law enforcement officer.'' - (Newsroom) - (crime) |
Police: Black gunman asked how his girlfriend was after he shot her and her family LANCASTER, Pa. -- A man who shot five people in three different locations in Lancaster on Sunday, including his girlfriend and a 2-year-old boy, took himself to prison and called police after committing the crimes, investigators said. Police said when they took Mark Galloway, 39, of Philadelphia, into custody he said, "I did it" and then asked about the condition of his girlfriend.
The shootings happened in three different locations. Police first responded to a call at the Turkey Hill on Plum Street. Two victims were found there. Other officers responded to the 500 block of Hand Avenue, where two more victims were found. The fifth victim was found at another location. Galloway's girlfriend, Tameka Rodriguez, 35, and her mother, Betty Hogue, 48, are in critical condition. They were both shot in the chest area. Police said Galloway also shot his girlfriend's daughter, Juanita Rodriguez-Rose, 19, the daughter's boyfriend, Luis Martinez-Lopez, 29. Both of them are in serious condition. Black killer gets life for murder of White man  LAWRENCE, Mass. -- A jury has convicted a Lawrence man of first-degree murder in the death of a man who was trying to prevent his SUV from being stolen. Roy C. Dowds Jr. was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Prosecutors said the victim, Keith Koster of Boxford, Mass., jumped on to his moving Ford Explorer when he saw Dowds stealing it from outside a store on Route 114 last year. Prosecutors said Dowds weaved and swerved, then crashed into a telephone pole. The impact threw Koster from the side of the vehicle and killed him. - (Newsroom) - (crime) - (Black-on-white) |
Boy: Mom prostituted me; black woman faces rape charges Pa. - A 12-year-old boy told investigators that he had sex on numerous occasions with a 24-year-old woman and that his mother collected money from the woman in return, police said. Ashley Laurie Banks, whose most recent address was in York, was charged with rape and corruption of minors. WGAL-TV reported that a warrant has been issued charging the boy's mother with criminal conspiracy to commit rape with a minor and corruption of a minor. - (Newsroom) - (crime) |

DNA links black ex-con to 19-hour torture of student: prosecutor - razor blades in his rectum  An ex-con accused of raping and torturing a Columbia University graduate student thought he had erased all traces of his DNA at the crime scene by ruthlessly dousing the victim with bleach and scalding water, police said. But then Robert Williams made the mistake of spitting into a police station wastebasket - giving authorities the evidence they needed to link him to the ghastly attack, a prosecutor said yesterday. Forensic investigators matched the spittle to skin cells lifted from a T-shirt Williams wore during the 19-hour assault and then left in his victim's Hamilton Heights apartment, authorities said. Six armed court officers in riot gear brought Williams, 30, into Manhattan Supreme Court yesterday where he pleaded not guilty to 71 counts of kidnapping, arson, rape, burglary and sexual assault. - (Newsroom) - (crime) |
Black accused of courtroom attack on lawyer convicted in rape trial The man who stabbed his own lawyer at his rape trial was convicted Friday of the charges and sentenced to up to 55 years in prison. Che Sosa, 36, was convicted in Norfolk Superior Court three months after he allegedly snuck a makeshift plexi-glass knife into the courtroom and stabbed defense attorney John Courtney in the face and chest while a prospective juror was being questioned. Two days later, Courtney and Judge Charles Grabau recused themselves from the case. Sosa was handcuffed and shackled and entered the courtroom behind a phalanx of security officers in helmets, gloves and padded chest protectors. He greeted Courtney by asking, "You still breathing?" On Friday, Sosa was convicted on more than a dozen charges, including nine counts of aggravated rape. He was sentenced to 30 to 40 years in state prison, with a separate 10 to 15 years to be served consecutively. - (Newsroom) - (crime) |
Former Nigerian football player sentenced to 13 years for rape of adopted daughter  France (AFP) - A French court on Friday sentenced a Nigerian former footballer who played for a top French club, Godwin Okpara, to 13 years in prison for the rape of his adopted daughter. Okpara's wife received 15 years for her rape and torture, while his mother-in-law received a five-year sentence for failing to come to the aid of a person in danger. After the verdict, Okpara's wife, Linda, sarcastically turned on their daughter, Tina, saying: "Thanks. Thanks a lot, Tina. Good luck in France." During the four-day trial, Tina, also a Nigerian, now aged 19, described having lived through an ordeal because of her parents, who brought her to France in 2001 at the age of 13.
