Wanted gang member-turned-writer arrested in Los Angeles LOS ANGELES Police in Los Angeles report a wanted gang member who wrote a successful book about the thug lifestyle has been taken into custody. Kody "Monster" Scott is the third person on a ten-most-wanted list who has been apprehended since it was released a month ago. He was wanted for investigation of burglary. Scott's autobiography, "Monster: The Autobiography of an L-A Gang Member," has sold more than 100-thousand copies. Suspected serial killer convicted in prostitute murder A Wayne County jury convicted a suspected serial killer of first-degree murder today in connection with the 2002 killing of a prostitute. Jurors deliberated for 10 hours over two days before convicting Shelly Brooks, 38, of Detroit for the slaying of Pamela Greer. Greer’s body was found in an abandoned apartment building on Detroit’s east side in February of 2002. She was bludgeoned to death, prosecutors said. Police and prosecutors have said that Brooks could be responsible for killing as many as seven prostitutes on the city’s east side between 1999-2005. “We finally have a dangerous predator off the streets and a few people can sleep easier tonight,” said Detroit police officer Mike Carlisle, a homicide investigator who worked on the suspected serial killer cases. Brooks faces a mandatory life sentence and is expected to go to trial next week in connection with the slaying of another prostitute. - (Newsroom) - (crime) |
2 Charged in UCLA Cadaver Scandal LOS ANGELES -- A former UCLA official and an associate were arrested on charges that they illegally sold parts of bodies donated for research in a scheme that produced more than $1 million in profits. After years of investigation by campus police, Henry Reid, 57, former director of the Willed Body Program, was arrested at his Anaheim home. Associate Ernest Nelson, 49, was taken into custody in Rancho Cucamonga. Authorities say the scam took place between May 7, 1999, and Feb. 26, 2004. Bodies donated to the university were supposed to be used for medical study and research. Prosecutors said that instead, Reid made $43,000 by selling remains to Nelson, who operated Empire Anatomical Co. - (Newsroom) - (crime) |

Mother admits using infant as weapon - pleads guilty to swinging baby to hit boyfriend, hurting child ERIE, Pa. - A woman pleaded guilty Tuesday to swinging her 4-week-old son like a bat to hit her boyfriend during a fight, fracturing the infant’s skull in the process. Chytoria Graham, 27, pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of a child under a plea agreement with prosecutors. By pleading guilty, Graham acknowledged that on Oct. 8 she grabbed her son Jarron by his feet and swung him, hitting her boyfriend and seriously injuring the child. - (Newsroom) - (crime) |

Kennie Applewhite and another black gang-raped a woman who was walking to the store A woman walking to a grocery store in the Heritage Hill District was raped Saturday evening, according to authorities. The incident happened along State Street near Washington Avenue, just across from the city's Archive Center in the old public museum complex. The victim was apparently walking west near Jefferson Avenue when two men grabbed her, took her behind the Calkins Law Office, an historical building at the peak of Washington and State. In court on Monday, 29-year-old Kennie Applewhite - one of two suspects in the case - was arraigned. While police look for the second suspect in the Heritage Hill case, described as a black male in his 30's with an average build and wearing dreadlocks, members of the Association are putting out the word by way of an email alert to more than 200 members. - (Newsroom) - (crime) |
Black Math Teacher Arrested On Charges Of Rape POMPANO BEACH, Fla. -- A teacher at Blanche Ely Senior High School has been charged with rape after one of his students said he attacked her in a classroom Friday. Officials said math teacher, Conrad Hoever, has been reassigned to a school district facility where he will have no contact with students while the district and sheriff's office investigate. Hoever, 43, allegedly forced a 15-year-old girl up against a classroom wall and lifted up her skirt. He was arrested at the school Friday evening and has since bonded out of the county jail. - (Newsroom) - (crime) |
Trial Begins in Case of Suspected Black Serial Killer A serial killing suspect goes on trial Monday in Kansas City but there won't be any jury. The judge will weigh the evidence in the case of Lorenzo Gilyard, who's being tried for seven of the 13 killings he's suspected of. Prosecutors agreed not to seek the death penalty as long as defense attorneys agreed to a bench trial. Gilyard has been in jail since 2004 on allegations that he strangled 12 women and girls between 1977 and 1993. A 13th murder charge was added last year. If Gilyard is convicted on even one of the first-degree murder counts, his only possible sentence will be life without parole. Gilyard has maintained his innocence in conversations with relatives, according to the Kansas City Star. His trial will revolve largely around DNA evidence.
