  • European Minorities Torn Between Worlds
PARIS -- Nacera Berrouba, a young Algerian in Paris, says she couldn't get the job she dreamed of until she dyed her hair blond. The wave of riots that engulfed impoverished, largely Muslim French suburbs around this time last year awakened many people to the reality that something was fundamentally broken in one prominent European model of assimilation. Many youths said that deep down their strongest attachments were to their family homeland.

Jury acquits black Sodomite prisoner of raping his cellmate
A Pierce County man who the state determined raped his prison cellmate last year was found not guilty of the crime by a jury. Tremayne Francis, 34, was serving a nine-year sentence for the 1998 rapes of two young men when an 18-year-old man told state investigators that the former martial-arts instructor had forced him into having sex at the Monroe Correctional Complex. When the cellmate reported he was raped by Francis in June 2005, the DOC already had determined that while in prison Francis had raped another inmate and tried to coerce other prisoners into having sex with him. DOC investigators then determined he also committed the 2005 rape and punished him for it. Francis claimed the sex was consensual. - (crime)

  • Jury Orders anti-illegal immigration Rancher to Pay trespassing Mex-American Hunting Party
SIERRA VISTA, Ariz. -- An anti-illegal immigration activist accused of threatening to shoot a Mexican-American family of hunters with an assault rifle and using racial slurs against them was ordered to pay them $98,000. A civil jury held rancher Roger Barnett only partly responsible, saying some of the blame lay with the man who sued and the man's father. Ronald Morales and his father, Arturo, were with his two young daughters and their friend when Barnett confronted them near his Douglas-area ranch and accused them of trespassing Oct. 30, 2004. Morales' lawsuit claims they were legally crossing land Barnett leases from the state. The Moraleses are U.S. citizens of Mexican descent.
Barnett, who claims to have detained more than 10,000 migrants in the last 10 years, denied threatening the hunting party. He testified that he only took out his AR-15 rifle because the adults in the group were carrying rifles.
"In the Morales family, the father taught the son to trespass, and now the father's teaching the daughters how to trespass in blatant disregard for the law," said Donald Barnett, who was initially named in the suit but later dropped as a defendant. "I guess in this country, private property and a person's rights don't mean much any more."
The lawsuit was sponsored by the Border Action Network and the Southern Poverty Law Center, "civil rights" groups that have accused Barnett of acting as a vigilante and abusing illegal immigrants he detains on his ranch. Morales said he asked the Cochise County Attorney to press criminal charges against Barnett, but was told no jury would convict him.

  • A Border Watcher Finds Himself Under Scrutiny
For years, Roger Barnett has holstered a pistol to his hip, tucked an assault rifle in his truck and set out over the scrub brush on his thousands of acres of ranchland near the Mexican border in southeastern Arizona to hunt illegal immigrants. "Immigrant rights" groups have filed lawsuits, accusing him of harassing and unlawfully imprisoning people he has confronted on his ranch near Douglas. “The Barnetts, probably more than any people in this country, are responsible for the vigilante movement as it now exists,” said Mark Potok, legal director of the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Police Kill Black Woman, 92, in Shootout at Her Home
Kathryn JohnstonPolice who shot and killed a 92-year-old woman in Atlanta after she wounded three officers were looking for a man who sold drugs to undercover agents at her home earlier that day, authorities said on Wednesday. The agents got a search warrant after buying drugs on Tuesday from a man in Kathryn Johnston's home, Assistant Police Chief Alan Dreher said. Johnston's niece, Sarah Dozier, said her aunt probably had reason to shoot the three investigators as they stormed her house. "My aunt was in good health. I'm sure she panicked when they kicked that door down," she told WAGA-TV, adding that there were no drugs in the house. "There was no reason they had to go in there and shoot her down like a dog." Police insisted the officers did everything right before entering the home, despite suggestions from the woman's neighbours and relatives that it was a case of mistaken identity. - (Newsroom)

Court upholds conviction of ex-police officer for rape
Maceo SimmonsA federal appeals court has upheld the conviction of former Jackson police officer Maceo Simmons on civil rights charges stemming from a 1999 sexual assault. The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans threw out Simmons' 20-year prison sentence and ordered him resentenced under new guidelines. The victim, who was 19 at the time of the assault, said that after a traffic stop Sept. 19, 1999, Simmons took her in his patrol car to a remote spot and sexually assaulted her while a second officer acted as a lookout, according to the court record. The woman said she waited a year before filing a report because she was scared. Simmons and Officer Thomas Catchings were arrested in December 2000 and placed on administrative leave without pay. The two were acquitted in state court in 2001. Simmons was convicted in March 1, 2005, in federal court in Jackson on a charge that he had committed the assault while acting under the color of law. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison. - (Newsroom) - (crime)

White good Samaritan stops armed black from carjacking and possible rape of woman
Lonnie Martin Jr.Thomas JacobsColumbia police say a good Samaritan confronted an armed man in the parking lot of the Wal-Mart Wednesday morning. Marie Rich of Irmo told officers that around 5 a.m. Wednesday a man, who's been identified as 51-year-old Lonnie Martin Jr., approached her as she was getting into her car and said he needed a ride. "I slammed the door, hit the alarm button on my car, and I started screaming and running," said Rich. She approached another shopper, Thomas Jacobs of Irmo, and told him what happened. "I went in pursuit of him," explained Jacobs. "When I caught up, I asked him to come back to the store." The incident report states Martin then walked away. Jacobs grabbed Martin, according to police, and the two got into a fight. The report states that Martin pulled out a gun and stuck it in Jacob's stomach, and the two began struggling with the weapon. According to police, the man was able to stop Martin from firing the gun by holding the hammer on the revolver. - (Newsroom) - (crime)

  • Hate Crime Charges Filed Against Black Youths
LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Eight black youths have been charged with hate crimes and felony assault in the brutal beating of three white women on Halloween night. The youths -- seven girls and one boy -- pleaded not guilty Wednesday. If convicted, they face punishments ranging from probation to confinement in a youth facility. The attack happened at a Halloween block party in the posh Bixby Knolls area of Long Beach known for elaborate Halloween decorations and fancy candy. Police said the black youths hurled racial insults at the women -- two 19-year-olds and a 21-year-old -- and punched and kicked them. One was hit with a skateboard and both suffered broken bones and other injuries. They said the attackers shouted, "I hate whites" and other profanities during the assault. The local chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People expressed dismay over the incident and said the organization would monitor the case to ensure a fair trial. - (Hatecrimes)

Daniel CliattA former sixth-grade teacher at Endeavour Elementary School in Cocoa, pleaded guilty Wednesday to 13 counts of performing sexual acts on a 13-year-old male student in his classroom. Daniel Cliatt, who will be sentenced on Jan. 16, faces a minimum of 65 years in prison and a maximum of 260 years. He had earlier rejected a plea deal offered by the state that could have seen him released after 40 years in prison. "I didn't expect this," said a smiling Julia Lynch, assistant state attorney, outside the courtroom. "This was a complete surprise." The jury selection process ended abruptly this morning when Cliatt, who now faces a life in prison sentence, entered his guilty plea. - (Newsroom) - (crime)
