  ISTANBUL, Turkey -- Two men who converted to Christianity went on trial Thursday for allegedly insulting "Turkishness" and inciting religious hatred against Islam, the Anatolia news agency reported.

  SIERRA VISTA, Ariz. -- An anti-illegal immigration activist accused of threatening to shoot a Mexican-American family of hunters with an assault rifle and using racial slurs against them was ordered to pay them $98,000. A civil jury held rancher Roger Barnett only partly responsible, saying some of the blame lay with the man who sued and the man's father. Ronald Morales and his father, Arturo, were with his two young daughters and their friend when Barnett confronted them near his Douglas-area ranch and accused them of trespassing Oct. 30, 2004. Morales' lawsuit claims they were legally crossing land Barnett leases from the state. The Moraleses are U.S. citizens of Mexican descent.
  Barnett, who claims to have detained more than 10,000 migrants in the last 10 years, denied threatening the hunting party. He testified that he only took out his AR-15 rifle because the adults in the group were carrying rifles.
  "In the Morales family, the father taught the son to trespass, and now the father's teaching the daughters how to trespass in blatant disregard for the law," said Donald Barnett, who was initially named in the suit but later dropped as a defendant. "I guess in this country, private property and a person's rights don't mean much any more."
  The lawsuit was sponsored by the Border Action Network and the Southern Poverty Law Center, "civil rights" groups that have accused Barnett of acting as a vigilante and abusing illegal immigrants he detains on his ranch. Morales said he asked the Cochise County Attorney to press criminal charges against Barnett, but was told no jury would convict him.

  For years, Roger Barnett has holstered a pistol to his hip, tucked an assault rifle in his truck and set out over the scrub brush on his thousands of acres of ranchland near the Mexican border in southeastern Arizona to hunt illegal immigrants. "Immigrant rights" groups have filed lawsuits, accusing him of harassing and unlawfully imprisoning people he has confronted on his ranch near Douglas. “The Barnetts, probably more than any people in this country, are responsible for the vigilante movement as it now exists,” said Mark Potok, legal director of the Southern Poverty Law Center.

  An HIV-positive man IN THE u.s., accused of knowingly exposing three separate women to the deadly virus, has been sentenced to 32 months in prison. Robert Richardson II, 30, apologized at his sentencing Wednesday, but said his behavior, while unethical, was not criminal and contended that none of the women has tested positive for HIV.

Police Kill Black Woman, 92, in Shootout at Her Home
Police who shot and killed a 92-year-old woman in Atlanta after she wounded three officers were looking for a man who sold drugs to undercover agents at her home earlier that day, authorities said on Wednesday. The agents got a search warrant after buying drugs on Tuesday from a man in Kathryn Johnston's home, Assistant Police Chief Alan Dreher said. Johnston's niece, Sarah Dozier, said her aunt probably had reason to shoot the three investigators as they stormed her house. "My aunt was in good health. I'm sure she panicked when they kicked that door down," she told WAGA-TV, adding that there were no drugs in the house. "There was no reason they had to go in there and shoot her down like a dog." Police insisted the officers did everything right before entering the home, despite suggestions from the woman's neighbours and relatives that it was a case of mistaken identity. - (Newsroom)

New Zealand: Another Somali 'refugee' - another sex attack
A taxi driver has gone on trial in Palmerston North District Court accused of kidnapping and sexually attacking a woman passenger. Sharif Sadiq Ali, 37, has denied unlawful detention, indecent assault and sexual violation relating to the alleged attack on August 22, 2004. The jury was told Ali, a Somali with New Zealand citizenship, picked up the 19-year-old woman from the taxi rank outside McDonald's on The Square about 1.45am. The woman told Crown prosecutor Andru Isac she sat in the front seat during the short journey to her home. The pair made small talk before things took a sleazy turn, she said. "He started saying things that made me feel uncomfortable," she said. "He said I was beautiful and that I had pretty eyes. He put his hand on my thigh." She said she whacked Ali's hand away and didn't speak to him until the taxi approached her home. When she directed him where to let her out, he said, "No, you're coming with me," and accelerated away. Ali then put his hand down her singlet top and groped her breasts, she said. "I tried opening the door, but it was locked. He grabbed me by the back of my shoulders and my neck - I was just in shock and trying to get away." She said Ali then forced his hand down her pants and violated her. - (Newsroom)

  LOS ANGELES -- A high school is apologizing after an anonymous article was published in the school paper comparing rowdy black students at a fast food restaurant to "a pack of monkeys." Carson High School officials withdrew copies of this month's newspaper, letters of apology were sent home to parents, and principal Kenneth Keener apologized over the public address system. The article, which was titled "Looks like the circus is in town," appeared on the editorial page of the issue distributed Tuesday. It appeared under the column title "Rambling Rogue," which is written anonymously each month by one of the paper's top editors. The piece described raucous and impolite behavior at a nearby Taco Bell: "When I go to Taco Bell, I want to go to a restaurant, NOT A ZOO! Stop acting like animals... behave and clean up after yourself." The writer said most of the crowd was black and described the students as stupid, rude, immature and insensitive.
  
  
• Hate Crime Charges Filed Against Black Youths
  LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Eight black youths have been charged with hate crimes and felony assault in the brutal beating of three white women on Halloween night. The youths -- seven girls and one boy -- pleaded not guilty Wednesday. If convicted, they face punishments ranging from probation to confinement in a youth facility. The attack happened at a Halloween block party in the posh Bixby Knolls area of Long Beach known for elaborate Halloween decorations and fancy candy. Police said the black youths hurled racial insults at the women -- two 19-year-olds and a 21-year-old -- and punched and kicked them. One was hit with a skateboard and both suffered broken bones and other injuries. They said the attackers shouted, "I hate whites" and other profanities during the assault. The local chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People expressed dismay over the incident and said the organization would monitor the case to ensure a fair trial. - (Hatecrimes)

• Israeli migrant teacher arrested in connection with lewd acts
  A teacher at a small private school in the El Cerrito hills was jailed last week on suspicion of molesting a student, police disclosed over the weekend. Achi Ben Shalom, 52, of El Cerrito, posted $100,000 bail from County Jail in Martinez on Friday after his arrest the previous evening on suspicion of committing lewd acts on a child. Tehiyah is a Jewish community day school in the 2600 block of Tassajara Avenue that teaches from a Judaic cultural perspective. School officials could not be reached during the weekend for comment. According to the school's Web site, Ben Shalom has taught there since 1985 as Hebrew teacher, choir director and band leader.
