Black Stepfather Of White Boy In Custody Fight Charged With Abuse  JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The stepfather of a 4-year-old at the center of a custody dispute has been arrested in Illinois, charged with domestic battery involving the boy. Evan Scott Johnson spent the first three years of his life with an Atlantic Beach couple who were trying to adopt him. Late last year, a judge awarded custody to his biological mother, Amanda Hopkins, and her black husband, Michael Hopkins. In January, Evan was taken to live with the Hopkins family in Illinois. According to police, Michael Hopkins, 26, was arrested Monday they investigated a report of child abuse in the home. Arthur Hastings Wise executed for murder of four co-workers * Man who killed four at lawnmower parts plant executed  Arthur Hastings Wise was sentenced to death for killing four workers during a shooting rampage he planned to coincide with shift change at the R.E Phelon plant, which makes ignition parts for lawnmowers. All four people killed either had something to do with Wise getting fired or took jobs he wanted, prosecutors said. Wise is charged in the Sept. 15, 1997, work place slayings of four Phelon plant employees: Sheryl Wood, 27; David Moore, 30; Leonard Filyaw, 30; and Charles Griffeth, 56. In addition, Jerry Corley, John Mucha and Stan Vance were wounded in the shooting spree. Police say the defendant had been fired from the plant two months before the killings for being aggressive with a supervisor. Black Man guilty in murder of White mother and her 2-year-old daughter kidnapped from a park    LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (AP) -- A Gwinnett County jury has convicted a 27-year-old man charged in the 1999 deaths of a woman and her young daughter. The jury returned the guilty verdict Friday morning against Wesley Harris in the deaths of 22-year-old Whitney Land and her two-year-old daughter. The jury found Harris guilty on all counts. District Attorney Danny Porter says Harris abducted the two from Panhandle Park in Clayton County and then drove the Lands' car to Gwinnett County -- where he shot them, put their bodies in the trunk and burned the car. - (Tyrone N. Crimestoppers Tip Leads to Arrest of black man for murder of white woman    A Columbia man has been arrested in connection with the 2004 murder of 20-year-old Stephanie Dover. Officers arrested John Joseph Moore, Jr. Moore is charged with murder, one count of possession of a firearm and one count of possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. In October of 2004, investigators said two men in a truck came up beside Dover's car, while she was riding home with her family from a cookout. Someone started firing shots, striking Dover and her three-year-old son. Dover's fiance, Gene Derrick, Jr., said he still struggles with what to tell their children. Three black teens bragged about breaking into an elderly White couples home on Halloween night and shooting 84-year-old   PRICE HILL – Three teenagers have been arrested in the Halloween night shooting of an 84-year-old retired postal worker. The teens apparently had been bragging about shooting Charles Iles after forcing their way into his Terry Avenue in East Price Hill on Monday. Police say they learned the identity of the suspects from students at Western Hills High School, where at least two of the accused are believed to have been enrolled. Iles still has two bullets lodged inside his body. He is listed in critical condition at University Hospital. Police identified the three suspects as Deondre Berryman, 16, Lehman Road, East Price Hill; Terrance Davis, 17, First Avenue, West Price Hill, and Otis Clark, 18, of Crestline Avenue, East Price Hill. Police said the three barged into the home of Charles and Ada Iles after trick-or-treating time had ended and demanded money. Police said Berryman shot Iles with a .22 caliber handgun. 32-Year-Old DNA Used Against Black Rape Suspect   Another example of the power of DNA evidence is being presented in State Supreme Court-Manhattan. It's a rape case that dates back more than 30 years. The key witness was the victim herself, who has gone public in her long struggle for justice. After testifying today, Kathleen Ham, now 58, said, "I've waited 32 years for this." The man charged is 58-year-old Fletcher Anderson Worrell. The rape took place in Ms. Ham's apartment at 317 West 21st Street on June 26, 1973. At the time, Ham was 26. She testified before daybreak that she saw a man with a lit disposable lighter coming through her window in the dark. Ham said she could see his shirt and sneakers, but not his face. She screamed. On the witness stand, Ham, who is a lawyer, fought back tears as she described how the attacker covered her head with a sheet, held a knife to her throat and raped her. Black Man Sentenced for Spreading HIV to women and children  There were stinging words from a judge as he threw the book at a man who had unsafe sex with women and children for years after learning he's HIV-positive. Sundiata Basir, 34, got more than 21 years and eight months behind bars for his guilty pleas to several charges including child sex abuse and cruelty to children. Basir had sex with women and teenage girls without warning them he had the AIDS virus. He was sent to prison Thursday by a judge who labeled him a "violent, self-absorbed outlaw." Prosecutors said Basir learned he was HIV-positive in January 1996 but had unprotected sex with several partners over the years, never telling them about his illness. New Mexico: Gonzales arrested in the Halloween strangulation and rape of an 11-year-old girl  Robert J. Gonzales, 20, has reportedly confessed to investigators. At a press conference Thursday afternoon, APD Chief Ray Schultz says Gonzales considered 11-year-old Victoria Sandoval his girlfriend. He claims he didn’t know how young the girl was, even though he met her at an Albuquerque middle school. Autopsy results show that Sandoval was sexually assaulted in her West Side mobile home bedroom before she was strangled. Sexual assault suspect pursued Tarpon Springs police are on the hunt for a man who allegedly kidnapped and sexually assaulted a teenage girl. Officers say Raymond Ranzy, 35, committed the crime on Oct. 20. They connected him to the case through fingerprints taken from the 18-year-old victim's car. Police say Ranzy has several aliases, including Ramone Dancy, Ray Ramzy, and Raymond Ramsey. He is described at 6 feet tall, 170-190 pounds, with black hair, brown eyes, a lazy left eye, multiple tattoos, and a pierced left ear. Virginia Beach Police Seek Three Black Suspects in Carjacking, Sexual Assault Virginia Beach police are asking for the public's help in locating three suspects involved in a carjacking and sexual assault in the Kempsville area of the city early Tuesday morning. The woman's friend, who was walking into a residence at the time, came back to the vehicle to see what was happening and both were allegedly forced into the vehicle. Police say the vehicle then stopped at the dead end of White Marsh Court where both victims were forced out of the vehicle at gunpoint. The female victim was allegedly taken to a brush line nearby and sexually assaulted. Afterwards the victims say all three suspects left in the vehicle. - (War Eagle) - (crime)

Former pizza deliveryman accused of raping and murdering 10 L.A. women A former pizza deliveryman accused of being one of the city's most prolific serial killers was ordered Tuesday to stand trial on charges of murdering 10 women, two of whom were pregnant. The Judge ruled during a preliminary hearing that there was sufficient cause to believe Chester D. Turner committed the slayings that occurred from 1987 to 1998. Turner, 38, is currently serving an eight-year prison sentence in an unrelated rape case. Pounders set a Nov. 15 arraignment date. Turner's DNA was matched to sperm cell evidence from the bodies of all the victims, said a police investigator. The likelihood of the genetic profile belonging to someone other than Turner was one in one-quintillion. - (crime) |
Colored Mom Admits to Psychotic Murder during ritual exorcism of demons  A mother tearfully pleaded guilty o killing her 8-year-old daughter while in a duel psychotic state with her husband. Valerie Carey, 29, also agreed to testify against her husband if he goes on trial for torturing the little girl to death inside a Downtown Atlanta hotel room. Police arrested Valerie and Christopher Carey in January of 2004 after the couple was found walking naked down Piedmont Avenue in near-freezing temperatures. They had their two other children, then ages 2 and 6, on their shoulders. A search of the couple's hotel room turned up the beaten body of Quimani Carey. The little girl had been strangled, stabbed, beaten and left in the room with pages of the Bible tossed over her body, police said. The couple characterized the killing to police as the result of a ritual to remove her demons. Valerie Carey said she believed the impending rapture would reunite her whole family in heaven on the planet Jupiter. Carey blamed the ordeal on her husband. - (crime) |
Police identify Norfolk officer who was fatally shot  The police officer fatally shot Friday afternoon had no warning that a man was about to open fire, police said Saturday. The officer was identified Saturday as Stanley Cornell Reaves, 33. He leaves behind a wife and two children, ages 2 and 5. Police released a composite sketch of the suspect. He was described as black with a medium complexion, in his mid 20s, around 6 feet to 6 feet 2 inches tall, weighing 200 to 240 pounds pounds. - (Animal Control) - (crime) |

Girl, 16, Sexually Assaulted Walking Home From School Police released a composite sketch Monday of a man suspected of sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl on her way home from her northeast Houston school. The teenager said she did not know the suspect, who she described as a black man with a light complexion, between 20 and 30 years old, 5 feet 7 inches tall with wavy or curly hair. Police Investigate Series Of Abduction Attempts In Simi Valley- Children Decline Offers For Rides To School On Friday, a 16-year-old girl told police that a man drove beside her in a vehicle as she walked to school. The girl said the man, who was about 35 to 40 years old, stopped and asked whether she wanted a ride. The girl refused and the man left, according to police. Authorities said the encounter did not involve physical contact and the girl was not harmed. On Oct. 18, a man driving in a car on Buell Court asked a 10-year-old boy on a bike whether he wanted a ride, according to police. Authorities said the boy declined and was not harmed. The Oct. 21 abduction attempt, which occurred in the same one-mile radius, was similar to the other reports, police said. MOULTON — The Lawrence County student who found the beaten body of Judy Jester said he had to do the right thing when he made friends take him to the old Moulton High School cafeteria. "If I were up there, I would want somebody to come and get me," said C.J. Carlisle, a senior at Lawrence County High School. He found Jester between three and four hours after Demetrick Young allegedly beat her unconscious for less than $10, authorities said. Authorities charged Young, 15, on Monday with capital murder. Jester, 55, a first-grade Hatton Elementary teacher, died Sunday just after 2 p.m. at Huntsville Hospital. The U.S. Supreme Court in March made it illegal to execute juveniles under the age of 18 at the time of their crime.
