Convicted Black Murderer Charged In 20-Year-Old Case  FORT WORTH, Texas -- Police say they have linked a convicted murderer to DNA evidence found on the body of a 29-year-old who was among more than a dozen young women killed in Fort Worth over a 21-month period two decades ago. Curtis Don Brown, 46, has been charged with capital murder in the death of Terece Gregory. A fisherman found Gregory's body in the Trinity River in 1985, a day after she was last seen leaving a popular downtown Fort Worth nightclub just before daybreak. She was shot in the face. Investigators say they linked Brown to Gregory through a DNA database in February while working on cold-case killings. Police say that Brown's DNA matches semen taken from Gregory's body and stored in a crime lab freezer. - (Newsroom) - (crime) - (Black-on-white) |
| Three black women savagely beat pregnant White woman - break her jaw A 23-year-old pregnant woman’s jaw remains wired shut two weeks after she was savagely beaten outside her Howard Beach home in what may have been a race-motivated attack. On May 24, the Peninsula Hospital nurse went to her car parked in front of her house to retrieve a cell phone. She saw three black women in their 20s walking down the street in her direction. When they got to the car, they threw her to the ground and kicked her repeatedly and shouted “white b----” at her. Although surgeons at Long Island Jewish Medical Center had to wire her jaw closed after it was broken in several places, doctors believe that her unborn child was not injured. “She’s kind of lucky. Baby-As-Weapon Mom Wants to Change Plea The Pennsylvania woman who admitted swinging her 4-week-old son like a bat to hit her boyfriend, fracturing the infant's skull, wants to withdraw her guilty plea, saying she now remembers events more clearly.
Chytoria Graham asked to withdraw her plea on Friday - the day she was to be sentenced to at least five years in prison - because she now believes she was not responsible for the injury that Jarron Troop suffered on October 8. - (Newsroom) |

Civil Rights Leader Charged With Incest LEESBURG, Va. -- A civil rights leader who worked closely with the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. has been charged with incest. The Rev. James L. Bevel, 70, was arrested late last month in Alabama, where he has been living, after being indicted on one count of unlawfully committing fornication. On Saturday, defense attorney Buta Biberaj said no plea had been entered yet and it would be premature for her to comment. A bail hearing is set for June 14. Bevel appeared briefly in Loudoun County Circuit Court on Friday but did not speak. According to the indictment, the crime occurred in Loudoun County in northern Virginia between Oct. 14, 1992, and Oct. 14, 1994, when the accuser was 13 to 17 years old. Bevel, who worked with King and witnessed his assassination in Memphis, Tenn., in 1968, has played a key role in some of the country's major civil rights protests. - (Newsroom) |

Former Atlanta Mayor Bill Campbell serving a two-and-a-half-year sentence on income tax evasion. Former Atlanta Mayor Bill Campbell was not there because he is still doing time in a Miami prison, but Friday morning his attorneys argued their case to try and win his freedom. Campbell went to a Federal Prison in Florida last August to begin serving a two-and-a-half-year sentence on income tax evasion. He was convicted in March of 2006 on three tax counts, but found not guilty of bribery and racketeering charges. Even so, his trial judge considered corruption evidence when sentencing Campbell to 30 months behind bars. His attorneys argued that was unfair and the sentence is too harsh. - (Newsroom) |

Black Suspect in death of White Beach mother has history of violent crime * Suspect arrested  VIRGINIA BEACH - The man charged with killing a 27-year-old mother last week has a history of violent crime, according to court records. Glenn A. Harrison Jr. was charged with murder, abduction and robbery in the slaying of Angela Spain. After Spain failed to show up for her nursing shift at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital, concerned co-workers went to her condominium, where they found her dead. She lived there with her 5-year-old daughter. The child was with a baby sitter at the time of the slaying, police said. - (Newsroom) - (crime) - (Black-on-white) |
