Moroccan Convicted in Sept. 11 Attacks Germany — A Moroccan convicted as an accessory to murder in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks vehemently declared his innocence as a court opened his sentencing hearing.
Mounir el Motassadeq, a friend of three of the suicide pilots, could receive up to 15 years in prison in the latest chapter of the tangled, five-year legal saga. In November, a federal appeals court ruled that judges in Hamburg had wrongly acquitted el Motassadeq in 2005 of direct involvement in the attacks, even as they sentenced him to seven years in prison for belonging to a terrorist group. The appeals court convicted el Motassadeq as an accessory to the murder of 246 passengers and crew members aboard all four jetliners used in the attacks, and ordered the Hamburg state court to set a new sentence. - (EU) - (Newsroom) |
Ali al-Marri, whom the government calls a sleeper agent for Al Qaeda is the only person on the American mainland still held as an enemy combatant, spends his days in a small cell in solitary confinement at the Navy brig in Charleston, S.C. Mr. Marri, who is 41 and a citizen of Qatar, wants the right to challenge President Bush’s assertion that he is a terrorist and “a grave danger to the national security of the United States.” Mr. Bush’s determination that Mr. Marri is an enemy combatant, she said, was based on substantial evidence, including “his association with Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, mastermind of the 9/11 attacks, and files found on his computer concerning chemical weapons of mass destruction.” |

Philly Mayor, DA Feud Over Crime Fight Mayor John Street escalated an exchange of insults with the district attorney, blaming her criticism of his anti-crime leadership on a "little temper tantrum" over budget cuts. Lynne M. Black College Defrauds United States - College Head only Gets 5 Years Probation Dolores Cross and Parvesh Singh, two officals from the now unaccredited Morris Brown College, have been indicted on 34 counts of fraud and theft. Negro sentenced to 26 years for murder of retired journalist Rosenbaum WASHINGTON -- A man who pleaded guilty in the death of a retired New York Times journalist has been sentenced to 26 years in prison. David Rosenbaum, 63, was struck with a lead pipe before his wallet was ripped from his hip pocket as he walked near his home in January 2006. Michael Hamlin pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in September. In October, Hamlin testified against the second suspect, his cousin Percy Jordan. Store security cameras showed Hamlin using Rosenbaum's credit card. He testified that it was Jordan who hit Rosenbaum twice in the head. - (Newsroom) - (crime) |

Australia: Price on head of Aboriginal bushland fugitive A bounty has been offered for information leading to the arrest of a notorious fugitive — the first time this has happened in Australia since Ned Kelly was gunned down and hanged. Acting NSW Premier John Watkins today announced a $50,000 reward for information aiding the capture of murder suspect Malcolm John Naden, who has reportedly been hiding out in bushland since June 2005. Suspects Sought in Series of Armed Robberies in Queens
 NEW YORK -- Police in Queens are seeking assistance in identifying black suspects in a series of robberies in the Jamaica area. Several commercial establishments have been attacked by black armed robbers, and police believe the same black assailants are involved in all of the incidents. The details of the crimes are as follows: Three black males armed with handguns robbed the establishment at gunpoint. No one was injured. - (Newsroom) - (crime) |

Racial row breaks out over tragic cafe car crash THE death of a man in a horror car crash at a Footscray cafe triggered racist outbursts and threats of violence yesterday. Businessman and father of two Sang-Hun Ha, 42, was drinking coffee with colleagues in Nicholson St when a woman reversed her car on to the footpath and through diners. People screamed and leapt for their lives as the car hit. It is believed the woman, 32, panicked when her car mounted the kerb and that she pushed down the accelerator pedal. Mr Ha was pinned against the front of Cafe D'Afrique, and three other patrons were injured. The driver received head injuries in the 1pm incident. After the crash, heated exchanges erupted in the street between members of different ethnic communities.
