LAREDO, Texas -- Two men kidnapped by as many as 40 bandits at a Mexican hunting ranch near the U.S. border were released unharmed Wednesday, but three others remained missing, authorities said.

PAHRUMP, Nev. -- Retiree Sam Jones wakes up each day and puts his graying hair in a ponytail, a .45-caliber automatic on his right hip and the U.S. Constitution in his back pocket. "This is America, and in America we speak English," Jones, 55, said in offering his interpretation of Pahrump's new English Language and Patriot Reaffirmation ordinance. "Old Glory has got to be flown on top." Board member Michael Miraglia, a 67-year-old retired Illinois state employee and the ordinance's chief backer, said TV images of Hispanic protesters carrying Mexican flags at May Day rallies made his blood boil. - Driver Jose in Crash Held on Smuggling Counts
DENVER -- The driver of a minivan that careened off a snowy highway with 14 passengers inside -- killing four and injuring 10 -- was jailed Wednesday on suspicion of human smuggling. Jose Francisco Franco-Rodriguez, 23, was being held in lieu of $100,000 bail on 14 counts of human smuggling, four counts of careless driving resulting in death, 14 counts of failing to give aid and 14 counts of reckless endangerment, Idaho Springs Police Chief Dave Wohlers said. Immigration officials also placed a detainer hold on him, Wohlers said. Everyone in the van was believed to be a Mexican national, Wohlers said.
