Jury Gives Alfonso Rodriguez Jr - Killer of College Coed Dru Sjodin - Death Sentence
FARGO, N.D. — Jurors have decided Alfonso Rodriguez Jr. should get the death penalty for killng University of North Dakota student Dru Sjodin. The same federal jury convicted Rodriguez, 53, of Crookston, Minn., on Aug. 30 on a charge of kidnapping resulting in Sjodin's death. She disappeared from a Grand Forks shopping mall parking lot on Nov. 22, 2003, and her body was found the following April in a ravine near Crookston. • Mexican woman dragged to death by illegal Mexican migrant was mother of three
  CASTLE ROCK, Colorado (AP) -- A woman dragged to her death behind a vehicle was identified as a mother of three from the Mexican state of Guerrero, the Mexican consul general said. Luz Maria Franco-Fierros, 49, was identified through fingerprints, Consul General Juan Marcos Gutierrez Gonzalez said. Franco-Fierros was from the city of Chilpancingo, the capital of Guerrero. Her battered, disfigured body was discovered early Monday along a subdivision road north of Castle Rock, about 20 miles south of Denver. Jose Luis Rubi-Nava, 36, was being held without bail on a charge of first-degree murder.

When she returned, Dejesus vomited in the bucket next to the bed where she fell asleep with her daughter, Niah Ford, in her arms, police said.   The armed man who burst into the U.S. Capitol on Monday morning was ordered held in jail for the next 10 days and to undergo medical or psychiatric treatment after testing positive for drug use. Carlos Greene, 20, said little during his initial appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge John M. Facciola yesterday. Wearing a white jail jumpsuit, he appeared to breathe heavily at times and close his eyes. He thanked the judge on his way out of the courtroom. Greene is accused of barreling a sport-utility vehicle through a construction entrance at the Capitol about 7:45 a.m. Monday, smashing into a concrete barrier and sprinting into the building. Police chased him to the basement and arrested him after a struggle. Authorities then discovered that Greene had a loaded gun in his waistband. Lashuan Harris, 23, who suffers from paranoid schizophrenia, pleaded not guilty to three counts of murder Wednesday in San Francisco Superior Court. She now must be evaluated by two court-appointed mental health professionals.

  GENEVA -- The United States has overtaken France as the country with the highest number of asylum applications, the U.N. refugee agency said Tuesday. Some 25,500 people filed asylum requests in the U.S. during the first half of 2006, which represents one-fifth of the total number of applications in industrialized countries, the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees said in its quarterly report on asylum figures. The U.S. and France are followed by Britain, Germany and Canada in the number of asylum requests. That is largely due to tightened asylum policies across Europe and better living conditions in some countries where asylum-seekers come from, the U.N. agency stated. Most of the applicants to industrialized countries in the first half of 2006 came from China, with 8,800, followed by Iraq with 8,500, Serbia and Montenegro with 8,000, and Russia with 6,900.

  COLUMBIA, Mo. -- FBI agents searched the home of a prominent Islamic community leader and Iraq war critic, a bureau spokesman said, declining to reveal any reasons for the search. A dozen agents searched the home of Shakir Abdul-Kaf Hamoodi and his wife on Monday, FBI spokesman Jeff Lanza said. Agents removed boxes and computer equipment throughout the day, neighbors said.

  NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. -- A doctor has pleaded not guilty to stealing a hand from a New Jersey medical school cadaver and giving it to an exotic dancer, authorities said. Ahmed Rashed, a 2005 graduate of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, was charged Monday after voluntarily returning from Los Angeles, where he is in a residency program, said his lawyer, Hassen Abdellah. Rashed, 26, is free on $1,000 bail. The dancer, Linda Kay, kept the hand in a jar of formaldehyde in her bedroom. Friends have said she called the hand "Freddy." Police discovered the hand, along with six human skulls, at Kay's home in July, after being called there on a report that a roommate was suicidal. The roommate was not home, but Kay was.

  RIVERHEAD, N.Y. -- Business owners could soon face fines and even jail time if they hire illegal immigrants in this Long Island community, the latest in one of many efforts by local governments across the country to crack down on "undocumented workers". The bill was passed 15-3 by the Suffolk County Legislature Tuesday and was expected to be signed into law by the county executive, despite critics who call it anti-immigrant.

  LOS ANGELES -- A 25-year-old Mexican man who says he was raped by a priest filed a lawsuit Tuesday against Roman Catholic church officials in Los Angeles and Mexico, claiming they conspired to hide evidence to protect the priest. According to the lawsuit, Los Angeles Cardinal Roger Mahoney and Mexican Cardinal Norberto Rivera placed the priest, Nicolas Aguilar, in posts where he molested as many as 60 boys in the two countries. The lawsuit was filed on behalf of Joaquin Aguilar Mendez in Los Angeles Superior Court. Representatives of the Chicago-based Survivors Network of Those Abused by Priests appeared with the accuser at a news conference but did not file the action. - (Mexico)

Suspect pleads guilty in reporter death
WASHINGTON — A suspect in the slaying of New York Times journalist David E. Rosenbaum pleaded guilty Wednesday to murder and robbery charges and agreed to testify against a relative who is also charged in the attack. Michael C. Hamlin, 24, told a judge that he and an accomplice attacked Rosenbaum Jan. 6 with a metal pipe as the reporter was walking near his home. Hamlin pleaded guilty to conspiracy, conspiracy to commit robbery and second-degree murder. Sentencing was scheduled for Dec. 19. As part of the agreement, Hamlin said he would testify against his cousin, Percey Jordan Jr., who is accused of being the accomplice. - (Newsroom) - (crime)

Tressler on Tuesday ordered Howard Nevison to visit a New York prison to get a clear understanding of what awaits him should he violate his 12-year probation, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported.
