  BEIJING -- A drunken Chinese migrant worker jumped into a panda enclosure at the Beijing Zoo, was bitten by the bear and retaliated by chomping down on the animal's back, state media said Wednesday. Zhang Xinyan, from the central province of Henan, drank four jugs of beer at a restaurant near the zoo before visiting Gu Gu the panda.

  GENEVA -- The United States has overtaken France as the country with the highest number of asylum applications, the U.N. refugee agency said Tuesday. Some 25,500 people filed asylum requests in the U.S. during the first half of 2006, which represents one-fifth of the total number of applications in industrialized countries, the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees said in its quarterly report on asylum figures. The U.S. and France are followed by Britain, Germany and Canada in the number of asylum requests. That is largely due to tightened asylum policies across Europe and better living conditions in some countries where asylum-seekers come from, the U.N. agency stated. Most of the applicants to industrialized countries in the first half of 2006 came from China, with 8,800, followed by Iraq with 8,500, Serbia and Montenegro with 8,000, and Russia with 6,900.

  COLUMBIA, Mo. -- FBI agents searched the home of a prominent Islamic community leader and Iraq war critic, a bureau spokesman said, declining to reveal any reasons for the search. A dozen agents searched the home of Shakir Abdul-Kaf Hamoodi and his wife on Monday, FBI spokesman Jeff Lanza said. Agents removed boxes and computer equipment throughout the day, neighbors said.

  NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. -- A doctor has pleaded not guilty to stealing a hand from a New Jersey medical school cadaver and giving it to an exotic dancer, authorities said. Ahmed Rashed, a 2005 graduate of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, was charged Monday after voluntarily returning from Los Angeles, where he is in a residency program, said his lawyer, Hassen Abdellah. Rashed, 26, is free on $1,000 bail. The dancer, Linda Kay, kept the hand in a jar of formaldehyde in her bedroom. Friends have said she called the hand "Freddy." Police discovered the hand, along with six human skulls, at Kay's home in July, after being called there on a report that a roommate was suicidal. The roommate was not home, but Kay was.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office announced an arrest this morning in the death of a woman dragged behind a vehicle for a mile on a rural roadway. Jose Luis Rubi-Nava, 36, was arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder. He is the man pictured in a photograph found near where the woman was dragged which was distributed to local news media when the sheriff asked for help in the investigation. Rubi-Nava is a suspected illegal immigrant. The victim is described as a short, white woman with a stocky build and red hair pulled into a ponytail. Neighbors discovered the woman’s body before dawn Monday. Her face was unrecognizable and an orange tow rope was found around her neck, - (Invasion!) - (Newsroom)

  LOS ANGELES -- A 25-year-old Mexican man who says he was raped by a priest filed a lawsuit Tuesday against Roman Catholic church officials in Los Angeles and Mexico, claiming they conspired to hide evidence to protect the priest. According to the lawsuit, Los Angeles Cardinal Roger Mahoney and Mexican Cardinal Norberto Rivera placed the priest, Nicolas Aguilar, in posts where he molested as many as 60 boys in the two countries. The lawsuit was filed on behalf of Joaquin Aguilar Mendez in Los Angeles Superior Court. Suspect pleads guilty in reporter death
WASHINGTON — A suspect in the slaying of New York Times journalist David E. Rosenbaum pleaded guilty Wednesday to murder and robbery charges and agreed to testify against a relative who is also charged in the attack. Michael C. Hamlin, 24, told a judge that he and an accomplice attacked Rosenbaum Jan. 6 with a metal pipe as the reporter was walking near his home. Hamlin pleaded guilty to conspiracy, conspiracy to commit robbery and second-degree murder. Sentencing was scheduled for Dec. 19. As part of the agreement, Hamlin said he would testify against his cousin, Percey Jordan Jr., who is accused of being the accomplice. - (Newsroom) - (crime)
