| Pack of (minority) youth attack 54-year-old White man in racist hatecrime - A kind man's beating stirs Fulton Hill When a group of minithugs mouthing racial slurs gang up on a 54-year-old (White) bicyclist known for kindness, neighbors in this racially mixed, working-class community take it personally. Norman Roscher, the victim of the attempted bicycle theft and beating, said the neighborhood is fired up. "The outpouring of support from the neighbors has been incredible -- black and white," he said. Shortly after 5 p.m. Friday, Roscher, who is white, was riding his bicycle. A large number of boys and girls were gathered outside the fence. One boy asked Roscher a question. He pulled up, and the boy hit him with a sucker punch. At least 10 boys swarmed the bicyclist, punching and swinging, said Dayquah, another boy who witnessed the attack. Roscher heard "Give me your bicycle," he recalled. "They were all smiling and laughing and punching." He said they were using racial slurs the whole time. - (another angry white) |

Calif. Councilman Convicted for Drugs A Sacramento County jury convicted Fairfield City Councilman John A. English of possessing methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia while inducing his nephew to lie to investigators.
Authorities arrested English, 53, on Dec. 31 at Sacramento International Airport after baggage screeners found methamphetamine and two pipes in his carry-on luggage. In addition to the drug charges, English was accused of coaching his adult nephew about how to take responsibility for the drugs. The nephew, Leslie Davis, first told investigators the drugs and pipes were his, but later recanted. Prosecutors used DNA evidence. - (Norcal) - (Svejk) |
Former East St. Louis Deputy Police Chief Will Not Face Charges In 1979 Murder A former East St. Louis police officer will not face charges in a murder more than 25 years ago.
Earlier this year, East St. Louis police requested Illinois State Police reopen Floyd Reese's murder investigation.
Reese was shot and killed behind an East t. Louis skating rink in 1979.
Police questioned Rudy McIntosh, who was 19 at the time. McIntosh was fired from the police force in may for allegedly not having a high

Five East St. Louisans were found guilty in federal court for participating in a vote-buying scheme to get Democrats elected  Five East St. Louisans were found guilty on all counts they faced in federal court for participating in a vote-buying scheme to get Democrats elected during the Nov. 2 election.
When added to the guilty pleas of three committeemen and an election worker in March that resulted from the same FBI investigation, it's the largest bust of vote fraud in the city's recent past, and, perhaps, ever. The most prominent of those convicted Wednesday is East St. Louis Democratic
Party leader Charles Powell Jr., 61. He was found guilty of participating in a
conspiracy to commit voter fraud. He was caught on tape Oct. 13 telling the
Democratic committeemen to calculate their budget requests from the county

Three Black Teens Charged With Kidnapping then Killing White Arlington Woman  JACKSONVILLE, FL -- Mary Jane Wright was duct-taped, handcuffed and kidnapped from her Arlington apartment. She would die at another apartment complex only blocks away. "This was a senseless crime. Mary wouldn't hurt anybody," said her sister Vickie Souder.
Police arrested and charged Keith Monford, Aaron Wright and Michael Workman with her murder. The suspects are 16-years-old. "I know they're just 16-years-old but I hope they all get the death penalty," said a sobbing Souder. - (Aryan Barbarian) - (crime) - (black on white)

Woman who threatened Zeta-Jones sentenced   LOS ANGELES -- A woman who pleaded no contest to stalking and threatening Catherine Zeta-Jones was sentenced Friday to three years in state prison, but with credit for time served, she could be behind bars for less than a year. Dawnette Knight, 35, cried silently as the Judge read her
sentence. The judge also approved a 10-year restraining order barring Knight
from contact with Zeta-Jones and her family and ordered her to pay $200 in
restitution. He gave her credit for 600 days served. One letter said: "We are going to slice her up like meat on a bone and feed her to the dogs." - (Brewski) |
Police: Fake Doctor Treating, Prescribing Medication To Patients COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Police on Friday issued an alert that a man has been portraying himself as a doctor, diagnosing, treating and prescribing medication to patients in the Columbus area. Police said Mark Xavier Ming was posing as
a doctor to area residents. Police said they later discovered that Ming had started medical school in
Florida when it was discovered that he fraudulently obtained a student loan,
which prohibited him from receiving the certification necessary to practice
medicine. Police said Ming served time in Florida for the crime and then moved to Columbus
with his three children where he again posed as a physician, administering

"Doctor Nose" Goes to Jail  Franklin Doctor, Sr., 53, also known as "The Nose" or the "Nose Doctor" was arrested Friday in Columbia after a tip to 911. Dootor was wanted for an assault on a Columbia woman.
The Richland County Sheriff's Department and federal authorities were searching for Doctor.

The Kenyan economics expert James Shikwati, 35, says that aid to Africa does more harm than good. The avid proponent of globalization spoke with SPIEGEL about the disastrous effects of Western development policy in Africa, corrupt rulers, and the tendency to overstate the AIDS problem. Shikwati: Huge bureaucracies are financed (with the aid money), corruption and complacency are promoted, Africans are taught to be beggars and not to be independent. 
33-year old Marcelo Herrera of McAllen is arraigned on three counts of aggravated sexual assault and injury to a child. His bond was set at $10,000 on each count and $5,000 on the injury to a child charge.
McAllen police say Herrera hit a young girl in the face last month. Investigators say it was then the child revealed to police that Herrera had sexually abused her several times. -
