Worth Rape Suspect Illegally In US Fla. -- A black youth charged with raping an 8-year-old girl and leaving her for dead in an old landfill slipped through the fingers of law enforcement earlier because of a loophole in U.S. immigration law. Milagro Cunningham, 17, of the Bahamas is charged as an adult. He escaped the notice of immigration authorities after previous arrests because he is a juvenile. Immigration and Customs Enforcement tracks the identities of everyone booked into the Palm Beach County jail to seek matches against a database of illegal immigrants. But the immigration check does not cover juvenile detention centers. |

Ford
quits Senate Pounded for months by ethics scandals, under federal indictment in a bribery sting and now, facing an almost certain impeachment, John Ford resigned yesterday from a state Senate seat he had held for three decades. Word of Ford's resignation on the legislature's last scheduled day in session sent shockwaves through an already punch-drunk General Assembly that has four of its members, including Ford, facing extortion, conspiracy and bribery charges. It also prompted Gov. Phil Bredesen to say he might call the legislature back to Nashville this year to tackle a political ethics overhaul. - (Tyrone N. Butts) |
