Paroled cop-killer and suspected rapist suspected of selling drugs to SMU student is in custody Authorities have arrested a man suspected of selling drugs to a Southern Methodist University student who died this month, apparently from an overdose. James McDaniel, 46, was unconscious when arrested. and was taken to a local hospital. Mr. McDaniel was wanted for questioning in the death of 21-year-old Meaghan Bosch, whose body was found in a portable toilet near Waco. Police believe she overdosed, but the medical examiner's office has not ruled on the cause of death. In December 2005, a 32-year-old woman told Dallas police she had been drugged and raped a few days earlier. Police put DNA in that case into a database, and the sample matched Mr. McDaniel's profile. Authorities were still investigating whether the victim was drugged when Mr. McDaniel's name surfaced in the Bosch investigation. Police do not believe Ms. Bosch was sexually assaulted. Mr. McDaniel also served 22 years in prison for the murder of a former Dallas police officer. He was convicted of killing James Burt Horan, 33, in 1979. He was released on parole in 2001. - (Newsroom) - (crime) - (Black-on-white) |

Black mugger stoops to kicking blind White man - even steals his cane TAMPA - Kris Scheppe had a bus to catch. He stepped off the Amtrak train near Nebraska Avenue, slung his bag over his shoulder and started the short hike to downtown, feeling for curbs with his cane. Tap, tap, tap. Scheppe was born with retinitis pigmentosa, an inherited eye disease that left him with no peripheral vision and central vision of 20/100. He can see, but only directly in front of him, like in a tunnel. But he doesn't shrink from a challenge. He's a former wrestler whose father taught him how to sail. He wants to sail around the world, alone. At 2:30 p.m. Friday, in broad daylight, the 27-year-old -- in town from Fort Myers for a conference for the blind at the Wyndham Westshore -- asked a man for directions to the bus stop. The man grabbed Scheppe's T-shirt. "Give me the money," he demanded. Then came a rain of kicks and punches. When it stopped, and the man ran away, Scheppe felt for his belongings. His cane was gone. His phone. The duffel bag was gone, and with it his clothes, digital camera, about $190 and National Federation for the Blind shot glasses to sell to raise funds for the group. He also lost a checkbook belonging to the Student Division of the National Federation for the Blind of Florida, for which he's treasurer. He got to his feet, bleeding from the face, and walked toward the skyscrapers. He found himself in front of the County Courthouse. He saw a tie. He asked for help, and the man in the tie showed him inside to security. They phoned the Tampa police. The man with the tie -- Scheppe remembers his first name was Steve -- gave him $200, told him the police were on their way, and disappeared. Police took a report with a vague denoscription of the attacker: black male, 18-21 years old, 140 pounds, medium build. - (Newsroom) - (crime) - (Black-on-white) |

Here, kid have a gun - Ex-con gave teen pistol as a gift to be ready for high school, cops say The .38-caliber revolver smuggled into a Queens school by a second-grader was given to the boy's older brother by their mom's ex-con lover, authorities said yesterday. Shamel Miller allegedly bestowed the twisted gift upon 14-year-old Darius Clarke so he could protect himself in high school, the boy's mom told cops. The illegal handgun's serial number even had been scratched away in an attempt to make it difficult for cops to trace. "My boyfriend came into my house and shows me and Darius a gun. He says Darius needs it for protection at school," the mother, Andrea Clarke, told police Thursday after her younger son brought the weapon to his elementary school. "I told him to get it out of my house," Clarke, a 35-year-old NYPD traffic agent, recalled, according to authorities. Despite her objections, Clarke did not take the revolver away from her 14-year-old son, police said. She merely told him to get rid of it. - (Newsroom) - (crime) |
