  • CIA Recruited Japanese War Criminals
TOKYO -- Col. Masanobu Tsuji was a fanatical Japanese militarist and brutal warrior, hunted after World War II for massacres of Chinese civilians and complicity in the Bataan Death March. And then he became a U.S. spy. Newly declassified CIA records, released by the U.S. National Archives and examined by The Associated Press, document more fully than ever how Tsuji and other suspected Japanese war criminals were recruited by U.S. intelligence in the early days of the Cold War. The documents also show how ineffective the effort was, in the CIA's view.

20-year-old black man raped a prominent white woman at knifepoint
Ronnie LongRonnie Long went to prison for life in 1976 after a Concord jury ruled the 20-year-old black man raped a prominent white woman at knifepoint. It was eyewitness testimony from the victim -- the 54-year-old widow of a Concord textile executive -- that swayed the all-white jury. She had "no doubt whatsoever," she said, Long was the man.
Racial tension in Concord also complicated the case. Blacks were already angry about the shooting of a black youth by a white store clerk. The selection of an all-white jury in Long's trial increased the divide. To enter the courthouse, jurors passed protesters and the courtroom was packed, with whites seated behind the victim, and blacks behind Long. The verdict sparked riots with chants of "Free Ronnie Long." But the case withstood two appeals. And to this day, police and prosecutors believe they got the right man. - (Newsroom) - (crime) - (Black-on-white)

MIAMI - Hands and feet bound, smashed with a hammer and a nail driven through her skull, 14-year-old Eileen Adams was found slain in a rural Michigan field in 1968. Two distinct places. One DNA link, police say: Robert Brent Bowman. By the time Toledo Detective Brimmer and Monroe County Detective Peter Navarre tracked Bowman to Dade County in 1982, he was homeless. They found him in a rat-and-snake-infested abandoned restaurant once called the Painted Horse. Inside, they found several dolls with needles in their heads, including the Spider-Man, hanging from the ceiling.
