• Half-Algerian 'anti-racist' French actor jailed for racial abuse
  Samy Naceri, the acclaimed French actor who has spoken out against racism in France, has been sentenced to six months in jail for racially abusing a black police officer. Naceri, 44, whose father is Algerian and mother is French, won a best actor prize at Cannes film festival this year for his role as a Moroccan soldier in the French box-office hit, Indigènes (Days of Glory), which rails against racism and is competing for an Oscar for best foreign film.

• Calif. Company Faces Immigration Charges
  SAN DIEGO -- A Southern California fence-building company and two executives pleaded guilty Thursday to knowingly hiring illegal immigrants and agreed to pay a combined penalty of $5 million. The executives could also go to prison. The penalty is one of the biggest fines ever imposed in an immigration case, and the case represents a rare instance in which prosecutors brought criminal charges over the hiring of illegal immigrants. Golden State Fence Co. will pay $4.7 million. Mel Kay, 64, the company's founder, chairman and president, will forfeit $200,000, and Michael McLaughlin, 42, a manager in the company's Oceanside office, will pay $100,000. The two men admitted hiring at least 10 illegal immigrants.

  DAYTON, Ohio -- A man accused of molesting his 4-year-old son who died following a house fire was acquitted of rape Thursday but convicted of gross sexual imposition. The Montgomery County Common Pleas Court jury returned the verdict against Doron Silverman, 25, after a two-day trial and 12 hours of deliberation.
• Roman Catholic Texas Priest Removed After Abuse Claim
  FORT WORTH, Texas -- A Roman Catholic bishop on Thursday removed from active ministry a Wichita Falls priest accused of sexually abusing a minor before he was a clergyman. Fort Worth Bishop Kevin Vann said he removed Gilbert Pansza the pastor of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, after discovering Pansza's admission of the molestation in the 1970s in diocese files. Pansza, 55, became a priest in 2000.

  WASHINGTON -- Federal officials said Wednesday that the raids on meatpacking plants in six states uncovered a "disturbing front" in the battle against illegal immigration -- identity theft as a tool to obtain employment. The raids against Swift & Co., a Greeley, Colo.-based meat processor, added up to the largest-ever workplace crackdown on illegal immigration, said Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff.

  CHICAGO — A federal appeals court on Wednesday rejected most claims by slave descendants that they deserve reparations from some of the nation's biggest insurers, banks and transportation companies. The three-judge panel of the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed a lower court ruling that slave descendants have no standing to sue for reparations based on injustices suffered by ancestors and that the statute of limitations ran out more than a century ago.

  MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- A federal judge has ended a 25-year-old desegregation case against Alabama, ruling that vestiges of racial disparities in the state's higher education system have been eliminated. U.S. District Judge Harold Murphy approved agreements settling the case, which has so far generated $210 million in state funds for the desegregation effort, most of it going to "historically black" Alabama A&M and Alabama State universities.

  MIAMI - Narseal Batiste, accused of planning to blow up Chicago’s Sears Tower and several federal buildings said he was never going to stage a terrorist attack, a statement released Wednesday said.
