HOLLIDAYSBURG, Pa. (AP)— The Pennsylvania Supreme Court rejected the Mexican government's request to delay trial for an illegal immigrant charged with killing three men at a social club last year. The court Thursday affirmed a judge's ruling that Mexico lacks standing to challenge the court system's treatment of Miguel Padilla, clearing the way for jury selection to begin Monday. The Mexican government has expressed concerns that Padilla, 26, was jailed without an attorney for seven weeks following the August 2005 shooting in Altoona, about 80 miles east of Pittsburgh.

MONTERREY, Mexico -- A man suspected of participating in the rapes and killings of at least 10 women in a border city made infamous by the deaths of more than 100 young women since 1993 has been arrested, U.S. officials said Thursday. U.S. Ambassador Tony Garza called Tuesday's arrest of Edgar Alvarez Cruz on immigration violations in Denver "a major break" in the investigation into the unsolved deaths in Ciudad Juarez, across from El Paso, Texas. "We believe Alvarez Cruz's arrest will help U.S. and Mexican law enforcement authorities solve numerous cases involving the murders and disappearances of women in Ciudad Juarez and in Chihuahua, and ultimately bring their killers to justice," Garza said.

Feds: Sex offender Rodriquez left student Dru Sjodin Student to die in a ditch
Alfonso Rodriguez JrDru SjodinFARGO, North Dakota (AP) -- A convicted sex offender accused of abducting and killing a college student went on trial Monday in North Dakota's first death penalty case in more than 100 years. Alfonso Rodriguez Jr. is charged with kidnapping resulting in the death of 22-year-old University of North Dakota student Dru Sjodin, who disappeared from a Grand Forks mall parking lot in November 2003. A federal prosecutor told jurors in opening statements that Rodriguez stabbed Sjodin, slit her throat and left her to die in a ditch. The defense countered that the case should not even be in federal court. Sjodin's body was found in April 2004, in a ravine near Crookston, Minnesota, where Rodriguez, 53, was living with his mother. Federal prosecutors have said they plan to seek the death penalty if Rodriguez is convicted. In an indictment, prosecutors have said Rodriguez held Sjodin "for the purpose of sexually assaulting her." - (Newsroom) - (crime)

  • Trial to Begin in Gruesome Va. Killings - two feral blacks cut the throats of 2 little white girls
Ricky Jovan Gray - or Gevon GrayRay Joseph DandridgeBryan HarveyStella and RubyKathry Harvey and daughter RubyOn New Year's Day, friends arriving for a chili party at Bryan and Kathryn Harvey's Richmond home found the house on fire. The bodies of the couple and their daughters, 9-year-old Stella and 4-year-old Ruby, were found in the basement, bound in duct tape, beaten, their throats cut. Five days later, three members of another Richmond family were found killed in the same way. Mason recognized one of the victims as the woman who helped rob him. Police believe the killings were the work of two ex-convicts suspected in a violent crime spree that began in November. They are suspected in two other killings. Ricky Jovan Gray, (aka 'Gevon') '29, faces trial Monday in the Harvey slayings, and his nephew, Ray Joseph Dandridge, 29, is to stand trial next month in the killings of Percyell Tucker, 55, his wife, Mary Baskerville-Tucker, 47, and her daughter, Ashley Baskerville, 21. Both face the death penalty if convicted. The gruesome killings shocked a community where Bryan and Kathryn Harvey had been beloved figures. - (Newsroom) - (crime) - (Black-on-white)

Arrest made in slaying of White man by Black youth during robbery
Justin KellyPaul J. McCabeHomicide detectives made an arrest Thursday in Wednesday's slaying of a North Buffalo man and the stabbing of his wife. Justin Kelly, 19, was taken into custody at his residenc and, after questioning, confessed to the crime. A knife was recovered after he was questioned. Kelly had left something at the scene on Bedford Avenue that provided a critical clue to his identity. He declined to elaborate. Kelly was charged with second-degree murder, felony assault, criminal possession of a weapon and robbery. "Apparently robbery was the motive," Gipson said. "It was random . . . as they were walking down the street." The commissioner said Kelly confronted Paul J. McCabe outside his home, demanding his cell phone. When McCabe refused, Gipson said, a struggle ensued, and McCabe's wife of 19 years, Christine G. LaBarre, came to his aid, only to be stabbed in the arm. The assailant fled, and McCabe staggered into the house, where he was later found by his teenage sons. - (Newsroom) - (crime) - (Black-on-white)
