Two Blacks In Custody In Trooper's Death Two suspects in the shooting death of a Florida Highway Patrol trooper were arrested Saturday, authorities said. Joshua Lee Altersberger, 19, was arrested at his home in Sebring about 4:30 a.m. Saturday and was charged with first-degree murder in the death of Sergeant Nicholas Sottile a day earlier. A second man, 21-year-old Quintin Jerome Kinder, 21, of Bainbridge, Ga., was also arrested, after giving himself up , but charges were pending. Sottile had worked for the FHP for nearly 24 years. He is survived by a wife, Elizabeth; a daughter, Heather, of Orlando; and a son Nicholas, of Tampa, who also works for the FHP. - (Newsroom) - (crime) - (Black-on-white) |
Lakeland officer cleared in shooting at black cop-killer and police dog-killer Freeland The state attorney's office has cleared a Lakeland police officer in the shooting death of murder suspect Angilo Freeland. Lakeland Police Sgt. Jeff Birdwell was justified in shooting at Angilo Freeland, according to the report. The report was the first official review of the September 28, 2006 incident that ended in the death of Polk County Sheriff's Deputy Matt Williams, the wounding of Deputy Doug Speirs, and the death the next day of suspect Angilo Freeland. Keep killer caged, cop widow says * Let Russell Carroll Die In Prison, Family Says The widow of an NYPD cop killed 26 years ago urged a state parole board yesterday to keep her husband's killer behind bars. "He's not a civilized person; he should never be let out," said Barbara Sorrentino, whose husband, Robert, was shot outside a Queens social club on April 10, 1980. Russell Carroll was one of five men convicted in 1982 of murdering Sorrentino. Robert Sorrentino and his partner, Jack Dowd, had split up to chase the holdup men after Carroll's crew robbed a Far Rockaway social club. Dowd heard gunfire and found his partner, shot with a .357 magnum, lying in the schoolyard of St. Mary Star of the Sea. Robert Sorrentino, 35, a father of three, died from his wounds about two weeks later. Girl's Diary Entries Lead To Arrest, Sex Charges Fla. -- Painful entries in a girl's diary led deputies to a suspect accused of sexually abusing the child, officials said. Keith Vickers, 31, was arrested because of allegations that he molested a child under the age of 12. Vickers is charged with 20 counts of capital sexual battery and several other charges. The victim told detectives that Vickers had molested her several times before her 12th birthday, forcing her to have sex with him, and that the molestation occurred at least 10 times after her 12th birthday. Deputies said they originally found out about the alleged incidents after the girl wrote them down in her diary and someone found the diary and turned it over to authorities. - (Newsroom) - (crime) |
Former Instructor Gets Jail For Having Teen Sex . A former instructor in the South Washington County School District received 24 years in prison for molesting two of his female students. Richard Parnell Rucker, 43, of St. Anthony was sentenced Friday on two counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct. He engaged in sexual acts with the girls between August 2003 and August 2005 in his car, apartment and in movie theaters. The girls were 14 years old when they met him. Man Accused Of Abduction, Rape Of Ex-Girlfriend A Golf Manor man is behind bars after allegedly abducting and raping his ex-girlfriend. Police say it happened at the home he shares with his parents. The victim has told police that for several hours yesterday, the suspect wouldn't allow her to leave his home, and during that time he allegedly raped her. Police identify the suspect as 31-year-old Kenneth Mays. |
Malcom X Student Charged With Stabbing Teacher 40-Year-Old Woman Was Apparently Upset Over Math Problem CHICAGO A 41-year-old woman who allegedly stabbed her math instructor at a city college faces more charges after struggling with Cook County Sheriff's officers during her bond hearing. Barbara Dunbar yelled an obscenity and then appeared to slap at an officer as she was being led away after the hearing. Dunbar was in court for allegedly stabbing her GED instructor at Malcolm X College. Dunbar allegedly became upset at the instructor during a math lesson and got out of her seat. The instructor told her to sit down several times and said she would be helped, prosecutors said. Dunbar, however, responded by cursing at the 51-year-old instructor and then allegedly stabbed her in the back. Dunbar has previous convictions for attempted aggravated arson and aggravated battery of a police officer. - (Newsroom) - (crime) |

Thousands pay final respects to fallen officer - Officer Fumiatti's wake held Friday night Police officers honored a fallen colleague. Residents of West Haven remembered a favorite son. On Friday, thousands of people turned out at the West Haven Funeral Home to remember Robert Fumiatti, a New Haven police officer whose struggle to heal and return to work after being shot in the face during a 2002 drug raid inspired two communities. - (Newsroom) Ref: Suspect in officer's shooting has record dating back to '82 Arnold A. 4 Hurt in Ind. Workplace Shooting by 'Fat Albert' * Mom: Worker in Shooting Teased Over Size A man shot and wounded four co-workers Thursday morning at a manufacturing business that employs disabled people through Easter Seals, telling police he shot them over respect, police said. Two men and two women were taken to hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. Jason Burnam, 24, was arrested inside the company cafeteria. Burnam indicated to officers that the victims were targeted and when asked why he shot them, he said "it was over respect." Man Enters Hospital Pretending To Be Physician "Doctor Soul" Suspect Flees Hospital In Car, Dragging Officer 20 Feet And Alluding Arrest Alert employees of a Hazel Crest hospital knew a man claiming to be a physician there was not the real deal and they stopped the intruder in his tracks The suspect walked around this hospital wearing a lab coat and stethoscope. When 22-year-old Kelly Fitzpatrick walked near the second floor nurses station at Advocate South Suburban Hospital they knew he was no doctor. One of the nurses took him straight to a security officer. Police know who the intruder is because he's been in trouble before. Witnesses say the suspect kept saying he was a physician, but then he panicked and ran out the emergency exit, to his car in the parking lot. An officer outside tried to stop him but Fitzpatrick allegedly hit him with his car. "As he was pulling forward, he dragged the officer 20 feet," Fee said. - (Newsroom) - (crime) |
