2004 rape and beating draws 46 years to life for Spanish-speaking day laborer Raul Salvador Marin
A slender young woman rose on unsteady legs and told a judge through quivering lips Friday that the man who sexually assaulted her, beat her with a rock and left her for dead should be put away for the rest of his life. The 23-year-old Massachusetts woman – identified in court as Jane Doe – cannot remember anything about being chased down a dirt path in Trabuco Canyon in June 2004, or about being attacked amid scrub brush and cacti. She told Orange County Superior Court Judge that because of her ordeal, she is no longer confident in life and is still recovering from her injuries. And then she sat back in the courtroom gallery, where she was comforted by her mother, as the judge sentenced Raul Salvador Marin, 33, to 46-years-to-life in prison. Marin, a day laborer who admitted the attack, sat quietly a few feet away listening to the proceedings through a Spanish-speaking interpreter. The judge Hoffer said the beating demonstrated a "high degree of cruelty and viciousness," and that Marin would be a "very old man" if he ever became eligible for parole. - (Newsroom) - (crime)

The 300-pound Missouri pizza parlor manager charged with holding a 15-year-old Missouri boy captive for more than four years threatened to kill him if he tried to escape, his parents revealed yesterday.   Baton Rouge man accused of forcing a teenage boy into his car after pretending to be a police officer was indicted on counts of rape and kidnapping. Larry Lionell Clark II, 22, was indicted by a grand jury. Aggravated rape carries a mandatory life sentence while second-degree kidnapping carries a sentence of between five and 40 years. Prosecutor Sue Bernie said Clark drove up to the 16-year-old boy’s home on Nov. 13 and told him they needed to talk about a criminal investigation. KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- A fourth person was arrested Friday in connection with the killing of a young man, whose burned corpse was found dumped along railroad tracks, and the death of his date, who was kept alive for days and raped. All four feral Negroes were being held on federal charge. Two were arrested in Knoxville and the other two in Lebanon, Ky. The victims, Christopher Newsom, 23, and Channon Christian, a 21-year-old University of Tennessee student, were last seen Saturday night while on a date.

The two had been at a friend's apartment and had left to get something to eat, with the plan of then going to another friend's home to watch movies. They never arrived. Newsom's body was found the next day. He had been shot and his body set on fire along a rail line. His girlfriend's vehicle was found nearby. "The second victim, they kept her for a couple of days and brutally raped and sexually assaulted her." "Then they killed her and dumped her body." Eric DeWayne Boyd, 34, arrested in Knoxville Thursday night, was charged with being an accessory after the fact in a carjacking. Lemaricus Davidson, 25, arrested the same day, was charged with federal counts of carjacking, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and use of a firearm in a crime of violence. Davidson had been released in August from a Tennessee prison after serving five years for carjacking and aggravated robbery. The other two suspects -- George Geovonni Thomas, 27, and Davidson's brother, Letalvis Cobbins, 24 -- were arrested during in a raid on a house in Lebanon, Ky., about 180 miles north of Knoxville. - (Newsroom) - (crime) - (Black-on-white)

Mother Sharlyn Singh accused of putting baby in oven
Fla. -- A woman was charged with aggravated child abuse for putting her baby in an oven, turning it on and leaving her apartment after fighting with her boyfriend, police said. The oven had not gotten hot enough to burn the child. Sharlyn Singh, 29, was in jail on a $15,000 bond. A man who was helping Singh's boyfriend move out of the apartment heard the baby crying and walked into the kitchen. He told police that he asked Singh where the baby was, but she did not answer and walked out of the apartment. He found the baby in the oven, police said. - (Newsroom) - (crime)

Carlos Granados executed for killing his girlfriend's child
Texas -- Appeals are pending as Texas prepares to carry out its first execution of the year. Carlos Granados faces execution Wednesday over a 1998 stabbing attack in Georgetown during a domestic dispute that left his girlfriend's 3-year-old son, Anthony Jiminez, dead. Katherine Jiminez suffered from some two dozen stab wounds, but survived to testify against Granados. She plans to witness the execution and represent her slain son. - (Newsroom) - (crime)
