"We've Got a Crime Wave in the Columbia Area"
Terrence JenningsLance JonesNancy DavisRichland County deputies say they've made a series of arrests in recent crimes. The most significant: the arrest of four people who investigators say are behind the killing of a white woman and the shooting of a cab driver. Officers say the suspects range in age from 12 to 18 years old. Deputies say three of them were involved in the shooting and killing of 50-year-old Nancy Davis last Saturday night. Davis was found on the road outside of her car around 10:30 p.m. Investigators say Terrence Jennings, 18-year-old Lance Jones, and a 14-year-old got into Davis's car when she went to run an errand at the gas station around 9:45 p.m that night. Investigators believe robbery was the motive in the crime. Jennings, Jones, and the 14-year-old are charged with murder and armed robbery. Officers say two of the suspects, Jennings and a 12-year-old, were involved in the shooting of a cab driver near Leesburg and Old Leesburg Road in Columbia Tuesday afternoon. The victim's injuries were said to be non life-threatening. Jennings and the 12-year-old are charged with assault with intent to kill and armed robbery for that crime. In both cases, investigators say the shooter was 17-year-old Terrence Jennings. - (Newsroom) - (crime) - (Black-on-white)

  • '12-pack' illegal in fatal car crash
Jose Trejo EncinoWhen Jose Trejo Encino lost control of his 1996 Pontiac Grand Prix late one night last month in Madison County, Tenn., killing one of his passengers and injuring another, he at least had the presence of mind to throw the cans of beer he had from the car into the woods before the police arrived, according to affidavits entered in court from witnesses. Encino, 27, who admitted to deputies at the scene "to drinking a 12-pack of beer earlier in the night," is now facing charges of vehicular homicide and tampering with evidence after the one-car accident that killed Sergio Lopez, 18, and injured Hugo Trejo, 20. An administrative hold was also placed on Encino this week after an agent for the U.S. Department of Immigration and Customs Enforcement determined the suspect was in the U.S. illegally. He is being held on $150,000 bond.

  • Officials say suspect in fatal car wreck is illegal immigrant
Rios SanchezThe man charged with driving drunk and causing the accident that killed two N.C. State University students and a 16-year-old outside Sanford last month is in the United States illegally and may be prosecuted for carrying fraudulent identification, an immigration official said.
Pastor Rios Sanchez, 55, is being held in the Lee County jail on $75,000 bail and a 48-hour immigration detainer after being charged with three counts of involuntary manslaughter and other offenses related to the head-on collision Oct. 27, according to law enforcement.
Helen Meghan Hughes, 22, and Jennifer Elaine Carter, 18, were pronounced dead at the scene. Hughes' stepbrother, Benjamin Richard Leonard, 16, also was in the wreck and later died at the hospital, N.C. Highway Patrol Trooper K.T. Hill said last month. Though Sanchez had a residency card, investigators say they now believe it was a fake, said Tom O'Connell, the resident agent in charge for Immigration and Customs Enforcement. O'Connell said Sanchez was from the Mexican state of Guerrero and that immigration officials don't believe he has ever legally been in the United States. The U.S. attorney could decide to press additional charges against Sanchez for possessing counterfeit immigration papers, O'Connell said. - (Newsroom) - (Invasion!)

Suspects' statements detail attack on woman
FORT WORTH -- Three TCU students accused of raping a fourth student in one of the men's dormitory rooms Oct. 13 laughed during the incident and later concocted a plan to minimize what they had done, one of the men told police. The victim, 18, at first thought she had been raped by only one of the men, Virgil Allen Taylor, because she was unconscious during much of the attack, according to arrest warrant affidavits. All three of the suspects are former athletes at TCU. The alleged role of the two other accused students, Shannon Behling and Lorenzo Jones, did not surface until police interviewed Taylor, who implicated Behling. An interview with Behling revealed that Jones was also involved, the affidavit stated.
