Etheopean migrant Melkamu Garuma guilty of murder, rape PA - A judge on Friday found Melkamu Garuma, 26, guilty of the first-degree murder and rape of his girlfriend, Estegnet A. Beyene. First-degree murder carries a mandatory life sentence without the possibility of parole. The Judge took about 40 minutes to determine that Garuma plotted the rape and grisly murder, in which he used a knife to nearly decapitate Beyene the night of Sept. 22, 2005. Garuma pleaded guilty last week to criminal homicide. Madenspacher’s task was to decide the degree of guilt and whether Garuma raped Beyene. First Assistant District Attorney Heidi Eakin portrayed Garuma as an obsessed, cold-blooded killer motivated by a suspicion that Beyene was having an affair with another man. “This was deliberate and premeditated, with specific intent to kill,” Eakin said. Sports: 20-Year-Old Nephew of Trevor Berbick Charged with Killing Him Jamaica — A 20-year-old nephew of former heavyweight champion Trevor Berbick has been charged with murdering him, police said Friday. Harold Berbick and an 18-year-old man from the same eastern region were charged late Thursday and were scheduled to appear in court Friday, constable Courtney Gibbs said. The body of 51-year-old Berbick was discovered in a church courtyard Oct. 28 in his home parish of Portland, about 80 miles east of the Jamaica capital, where his nephew and Kenton Gordon were detained earlier this week. Berbick was the last boxer to face Muhammad Ali in the ring and briefly held the WBC heavyweight title before losing it to Mike Tyson in 1986. - (Sports) |
Mary Jane King Guilty of Murdering Her 3-Year-Old Foster Son On the witness stand in the Bacon County Courthouse in Alma, Mary Jane King testified she went too far when she spanked her 3-year-old son Ahmad with a belt and then a plastic pipe. She also said she panicked and hid the boy's body, then reported him missing in Jesup to cover up the tragedy. Hit man executed in Texas for killing witness HUNTSVILLE, Texas - A man convicted of collecting $200 to kill a teenager to keep him from testifying about a drive-by shooting was executed Wednesday. Donell Jackson, 33, expressed love to his family and friends and assured them that he was fine. “I’m all right. Make sure Mama knows,” he told relatives who watched through a nearby window. Jackson, then 20, showed up at Mario Stubblefield’s Houston home on Aug. 31, 1993, under the guise of being the friend of a relative and asked to speak with him outside. Pharmacy Card Leads To Wrigleyville Rapist Arrest  CHICAGO Police have a man in custody, facing charges in the weekend sexual assault of a woman in the Wrigleyville neighborhood. Bond was set Tuesday at $300,000 for Jeffrey Cole, 23, of Blue Island, who has been charged with aggravated criminal sexual assault and aggravated robbery in the Saturday morning assault. Cole bears a striking resemblance to the composite sketch of a man police say sexually assaulted and robbed a woman in the Wrigleyville neighborhood. Police were led to Cole after detectives went back to the scene to re-interview a witness and re-canvas the area. The woman was attacked around 3 a.m. Saturday morning about a block from Wrigley Field. She said she was followed after getting off the 'L' at Addison. Police said Cole grabbed the woman from behind, robbed her of $50 and an iPod, and sexually assaulted her. Cole reportedly threatened the woman with a knife before the assault. - (Newsroom) - (crime) |
Six Killed in Hotel Fire in Reno's Casino District - Arson suspect Valerie Moore arrested Six people were killed and 31 others injured in a fire that swept through a historic hotel in downtown Reno last night. Police have arrested a woman on arson and murder charges. Valerie Moore, 47, set fire a mattress in a room of the 84-year-old Mizpah Hotel, Police Chief Michael Poehlman told reporters. According to Fire Chief Paul Wagner one victim was found about 90 minutes after the fire was reported shortly after ten last night. A search turned up five more victims and he said more may be found in the rubble - (Newsroom) - (crime) |
Parents Of Children Living Among Maggots, Rotten Food Charged  Police have shut down a house of squalor, where three children have been allegedly living amid trash, bugs and rotten food. Lawmen have also arrested their parents.
When hospital employees noticed the 2-year-old smelled of urine and feces and then saw a maggot crawl out of his clothes, it triggered an inspection of his home."We found conditions including trash, debris in house, infestation of insects, leaking pipes where ceiling collapsed, water on the floor," explained James Edwards of the Office of Code Enforcement.
Officials say water leaking from an upstairs toilet also created a risk of electrocution below. The conditions inside the house were deemed so deplorable, it was declared unfit for habitation and condemned. Authorities took custody of the 2-year-old and his 5 and 6-year-old siblings. Their 44-year-old father, Tommy Brown, and their 30-year-old mother, Jahary Deleon, were arrested and charged with endangering the welfare of their children. - (Newsroom) |
