Arrest Made in Wendy's Shooting Deputies have made an arrest in the fatal shooting of two employees at a Columbia Wendy's. Officers say they've taken 27-year-old John Henry Portee, Jr. into custody, charging him with two counts of murder and one count of armed robbery. Two Wendy's employees were found dead around 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon. Officers say they were alerted of the problem when a manager, who went to check on the restaurant after it did not open Sunday, found 53-year-old Carlaus Eugenia Johnson and 29-year-old Latora Michelle Bolton shot to death in a back office. Portee was the third employee scheduled to come into work that day. They say they were able to track him down to his home. After a brief foot chase, he was arrested and taken into custody around 2 a.m. Deputies say they recovered the weapon used in the crime, and that a ballistics test shows it is a match to the one used to kill the two women. - (Newsroom) - (crime) |
Police: Fatal Gunfight Triggered By Smile Police on Friday announced arrests in two fatal shootings. Quentin Mitchell, 30, is charged with murder even though he did not shoot 24-year-old Daniel Wilson but instigated a gunfight that ended with Wilson's death. The shooting began when Mitchell "didn't like the way (Michael Thomas) smiled at him." Witnesses told police that Wilson produced a gun, handed it to Wilson and told him to shoot Thomas. Wilson fired, hitting Thomas in the leg. Thomas returned fire, hitting Wilson in the chest. Wilson died that night. - (Newsroom) - (crime) |
Second Murder Arrest Also Friday, police announced that Silas Hayward, 33, is in custody in connection with the shooting death of 32-year-old Alden McPherson on May 29. Police said McPherson was shot at about 10 p.m. on West Ninth Street at McMillian Street. He died later that night at a hospital. Investigators said the shooting resulted in a fight over a gun, but it's not know if the gun used in the killing was at the center of the dispute. - (Newsroom) - (crime) |
Smyrna Police Officer Under Investigation for Stealing Police Money A well-known Smyrna police officer is being investigated by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. Sergeant Ken Hampton is suspected of stealing thousands from police coffers. Police Chief Mike Beach made an alarming discovery -- Hampton opened a bank account in the name of the department's "DARE" program. Hampton resigned from the force in a letter dated July 21, long before the money claims surfaced. Hampton was ticketed two years ago for speeding 80 in a 65. A court date was set for July 9, and the fine was reduced to $130.50. Hampton never showed for court, and never settled. His driver's license was suspended in December 2004. Hampton drove a city-owned vehicle for the better part of a year and a half on a suspended driver's license, without telling his superiors. Hampton took a job with the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Department just days after resigning from Smyrna, but quit that job after a few days of training. - (Newsroom) - (crime) |
Police Hunt for Cross Dressing Car Thieves Columbus Police are looking for help finding the leaders of a transvestite car theft ring. Dayton. Rodney Stringer and Marquis Jackson are wanted. But if you see them, they may not look much like their mug shots. "They've been described as either gay and or cross dressing male blacks in almost every incidence." Detectives arrested the first alleged transvestite thieves back in July when about 20 cars came up missing. "If they're carrying purses, they'll put the keys in there. Then they come back at night and rip off the car. - (Newsroom) - (crime) |
Sports: Chargers Linebacker Steve Foley Shot Chargers linebacker Steve Foley was wounded by an off-duty policeman in front of his suburban home Sunday, team and sheriff's department officials said. His condition wasn't immediately known. "We have confirmed that linebacker Steve Foley was shot early this morning," team spokesman Bill Johnston said in a statement. "We'll try to provide more information as it becomes available. Right now all of our thoughts are with Steve." The early morning shooting occurred after an off-duty policeman reported seeing a suspected drunken driver weaving in and out of traffic on an area highway and attempted to pull him over, said sheriff's Lt. Dennis Brugos. The linebacker's agent, David Levine, confirmed to The Associated Press that it was Foley who was involved in the shooting. "My understanding is he was shot three times in front of his house by an off-duty officer and that he's in surgery," Levine said. - (Sports) - (Newsroom) |
