• Mormon Cult leader gets date with executioner
  COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- A religious cult leader convicted of killing a family of five in 1989 will be executed in October, the Ohio Supreme Court ruled Thursday. Jeffrey Lundgren, 56, was convicted of shooting to death a man, his wife and his three daughters who had moved from Missouri in 1987 to follow Lundgren's teachings. He referred to the killings as "pruning the vineyard." Lundgren formed a religious cult after he was dismissed in 1987 as a lay minister of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

• Russia blast 'targeted Asians'
  A blast that killed 10 people in a Moscow market on Monday was caused by homemade bombs planted by two students targeting Asian traders. The attack, which marks a sharp escalation in the campaign by Russian ultra-nationalists against immigrants, was originally thought to have been provoked by a business dispute. Russia has seen a rise in xenophobia in the past two years, expressed in a series of murders and beatings of people with dark skin, often from central Asia or the Caucasus. Markets have often been points of tension as immigrants work there.

Police hunt rape suspect Gomez in Granger
A rape suspect escaped from police while being transported from Yakima to Granger, where he faced separate assault charges.
Elvin Acevedo Gomez, 22, of Yakima remained at large after breaking free from a Granger officer who was taking him out of a police car at City Hall. Officers from six agencies spent much of the evening combing the area near the police station and called out a search dog from Kennewick, but no major developments were reported. Acevedo Gomez was being held at the county jail pending trial on charges that he raped an intoxicated young woman at party. - (crime)

• Rapist Enrique Gonzalez may make a run for Mexico while out on bond
  Enrique “Rick” Gonzalez left the courtroom smiling and laughing Wednesday afternoon after the judge set his bail at $2 million in connection with a 14-year-old Mercedes girl’s rape and stabbing the day before. The girl had stumbled to a woman’s doorstep on Monte Cristo Road and FM 491 in La Villa just before 4:45 a.m. Tuesday, nude and caked in blood. “We asked Judge (Rosa) Treviño to set a really high bond or no bond at all,” said Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Treviño of the individual attempted capital murder charges filed against Gonzalez, 19, and Nicasio Rios, also 19. The two teens confessed to the crime on Tuesday, Treviño said. Treviño was particularly concerned that if the suspects’ bonds were set too low, Gonzalez would flee. He deserted the U.S. Marine Corps nearly two years ago and fled to Mexico. Authorities eventually arrested him trying to re-enter the United States, he said. - (crime)
