West Memphis city council member and pastor accused of sexual assault has appeared in court. Police had issued an arrest warrant for 60-year-old Herman Coleman, who had missed scheduled appointments with investigators. Coleman was freed on bond after his arrest yesterday. He had avoided police since last week. Coleman, who also owns a local insurance agency, was accused of sexually assaulting a woman at her home January tenth. He appeared in Crittenden County Court with his wife, Glendora, and his attorney, Bill Lewellen. - (Tyrone N. Butts) |
Former Suffolk Mayor Facing Solicitation, Assault Charges Former Suffolk Mayor Johnnie Eugene Mizelle was indicted by a grand jury on one count of assault and battery and one count of solicitation for prostitution. Mizelle, 58, was arrested by Suffolk police at his law office. The charges stem from a 43-year old female who claims she was a client of Mizelle's. The woman claims she met with Mizelle twice; during those meetings, she alleges he assaulted her by groping her with his hands and suggested that she perform sexual favors in exchange for legal fees owed. Mizelle was elected as Suffolk's first black mayor in 1986, and served in that capacity for four year. - (Tyrone N. Butts) |
Donovan Despanie Arraigned for Rape of 92-Year-Old Woman A 19-year-old accused of raping an elderly woman in a nursing home has been arraigned on charges of aggravated rape. Donovan Despanie was employed at the Evangeline Oaks Guest House in October of last year when he allegedly raped a 92-year-old woman who resided in that facility. If convicted, Despanie will spend the rest of his life behind bars. - (forum) |

Feds charge former East Spencer alderman in financial scandal CHARLOTTE — Former East Spencer Alderman Chris Sharpe pleaded guilty Monday to federal charges tying him to a financial scandal that included secret payments to public officials, salaries to relatives who never worked for the town and invoices for street work that never happened. Federal officials say the scheme eventually defrauded East Spencer taxpayers, the state Department of Transportation, a mortgage firm and two out-of-state payroll funding companies. Sharpe conspired with two other elected officials, a businessman and the wife of one of the officials to receive "tens of thousands of dollars" in secret payments. - (Tyrone N. Butts) |

Former New Miami auxiliary police officer surrendered on sex charges involving a 15-year-old girl Joseph E. Ferguson, 21, of Hamilton, was indicted last week on two counts of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor. He turned himself in to Butler County Common Pleas Judge Keith Spaeth and was released from jail after posting $25,000 bail. Ferguson is accused of having sex with the teen twice last summer, court records show. An assistant prosecutor, said Ferguson and the teen met in February 2004 on the Internet, where Ferguson portrayed himself as a 17-year-old Middletown High student. "She became hurt that he had lied to her and he didn't have contact with her after he engaged in sexual conduct with her." - (Tyrone N. Butts) |
Ronnie Dontell Drane guilty of rape-murder in the death of Tamarra Taylor Bruises found on Taylor’s body led Webber to conclude the sexual intercourse Drane testified he and Taylor had was not consensual. Taylor had been strangled. Tiffany Copeland an exotic dancer was found dead on a highway near Nashville, Tenn. Drane was arrested in Nashville by U.S. Marshals. No one has been charged in Copeland’s death. Drane has another murder trial scheduled. He is charged with murder and attempted murder in the shooting deaths of his aunt, Delores Buchanan, 50, and cousin, Larry Peaches Jr. Another cousin, Herman Marcel Buchanan, 31, who moved from the area after he was shot in the face, was fatally shot six months later in Frankfort, Ky. |
Jury selection to begin in multiple murder and sexual abuse case
Attorneys were to begin screening jurors Tuesday in the multiple murder trial of Marcus Wesson, a domineering patriarch who allegedly controlled his family with religious teachings, incest and threats of mass suicide. Wesson, 57, was the only one to emerge alive from the back bedroom of the modest one-story house at the end of a tense, hours-long standoff. Police discovered nine bodies in a bloody tangle and ten white coffins stacked against the living room walls. Reward Offered For Missing 5-Year-Old - Emily Rimel Disappeared Dec. 7 COLUMBUS, Ohio -- There is another plea from a Franklin County family to help find a missing 5-year-old girl. Emily Rimel disappeared from her Madison Township apartment in the early morning hours of Dec. 7. Dispite a widespread search effort, she has not been seen or heard from since. Police arrested Lindsey Bruce, 23, and charged him with raping the girl. There is a $12,000 reward for information that leads to Emily's whereabouts.
