  BALTIMORE -- A federal judge who ruled that the city of Baltimore should desegregate public housing by moving black and poor residents to the suburbs urged lawyers to reach an out-of-court settlement. Previous efforts to move people from city housing projects to less segregated areas have met strong resistance.
  

• Break in 1970 Cop Killing Revives Era
  ST. PAUL, Minn. -- In 1970, Officer James T. Sackett had just returned to work, three weeks after the birth of his fourth child, when the call came in: A woman was in labor and needed help. Sackett and his partner arrived shortly after midnight at the address the caller gave. When nobody answered their knock at the door, Sackett's partner went around the back. A moment later, Sackett was shot in the back. The 27-year-old officer, a St. Paul cop for just a year and a half, died at the hospital in what would become one of the bitterest mysteries in the history of St. Paul crime. The call was a fake, police said, the killing an assassination.
  Thirty-four years later, authorities have made arrests in the crime, charging two black men who allegedly sympathized with the Black Panther movement around the time of the white officer's killing. The arrests have stirred memories of the upheavals of the 1960s and '70s.
  Police on Friday arrested Ronald Lindsey Reed, 54, of Chicago, and Larry Larue Clark, 53, of St. Paul, on charges of first-degree murder and conspiracy.

• Two women arraigned on lesbian rape charges
  Mass. -- Two women, including a Smith College student, pleaded innocent to charges they raped and handcuffed another female student and slashed her with knives. Rachel Ann Klobertanz, 22, and Augusta Claire Kendall, 22, were ordered held on $2,500 cash bail. Prosecutor Susan Loehn said the three women first met at a downtown Northampton bar. They then went back to Klobertanz and Kendall's apartment, where they drank several bottles of champagne and engaged in sex that began as consensual but ended as rape, Loehn said. - (Brewski)
