Adopted son of white professor bashed to death with baseball bat sentenced to life in prison  Tavares Williams, 21, was found guilty Tuesday in the beating death of his guardian, UF adjunct professor Barbara Roth, 51, three years ago. Roth's body was found in her apartment in January 2002. Williams, then 18, at first denied involvement in the slaying, but later confessed to hitting Roth with a baseball bat. Roth had first met Williams while she was a social worker in central Florida. She eventually adopted him a few years before the slaying, associates said. Parent upset over 20-year-old ex-con Sex Offender attending local high school   A 20-year-old convicted sex offender is a student in a Lake County high school and an outraged mother is passing out flyers to make sure everyone knows he is there. She's been waving signs and passing out flyers to let other parents know their
children are sharing the halls with 20-year-old Antron Pompey, a registered
sexual offender. Pompey was arrested in 2002 at nearby South Lake High School where, according to
court documents, he pled guilty to holding a 14-year-old girl outside of the
locker room and "kissed" and "grabbed" her under her clothing as she cried for help. After serving time in jail, he was put on probation and put back in the

Norfolk Police Arrest Black Male Suspected of Raping Young Girl Norfolk police have a man in custody they say may have raped a young girl. Donnie Ray Tucker, 48, turned himself in at police headquarters Tuesday morning. Police aren't saying where she was attacked, but say it happened around 4:00am Sunday morning. Officials had issued a public appeal to find Tucker Monday night. After seeing reports in the media, Tucker turned himself in. - (Tyrone N. Butts) |
Sports: Cincinnati State Basketballer Rape Suspect Arrested Overnight  Floyd Davis Jr., 19, was taken into custody overnight and arraigned in court Tuesday morning. Davis was on the basketball team until a week ago, and as of January 21, he was no longer a student at the school. Police said Davis was talking with his alleged victim in a computer lab when he grabbed the 21-year-old student from behind, dragged her into a classroom, assaulted and raped her. - (Brewski) - (more sports) |
DETROIT -- Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick clashed with reporters Monday  Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick refused to take questions on the issue that contributed to the tensions in the first place -- the city's $25,000 lease of a Lincoln Navigator for the police to ferry the mayor's family. The story snowballed after a mayoral bodyguard shoved a TV reporter against a wall. Several reporters, including the one who was pushed, continued to press Kilpatrick on the Navigator. - (Aryan Barbarian) |
Roberto Ramirez Suspect in murder of pretty young White woman may have fled to Mexico   Police issued an arrest warrant for the killer of 21-year-old Melissa Dorner. The search is now on for Roberto Ramirez, 24, who lived in the same building as Dorner in the Edgewater neighborhood. Ramirez is described as 5 feet 8 inches tall, weighing 160 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. The suspect has not been seen since the night of the murder. There was a
possibility that Ramirez had fled to Mexico. - (Brewski) |

A former Abu Ghraib guard pleaded guilty Tuesday to battery and two other charges in the Iraqi prison abuse scandal as part of a deal with prosecutors on the eve of his trial. Sgt. Javal Davis, 27, also pleaded guilty to dereliction of duty and making a false official statement to Army investigators after photographs of naked and abused prisoners became public last spring. Davis, from Roselle, N.J., will not be tried on two other charges he had faced: conspiracy and maltreating detainees. 
Obadele, a former Republic of New Africa president, stood before a crowd of about 150 people at Jackson City Hall Tuesday night to kick off a Black History Month program and lightheartedly retold portions of a controversial gun battle 33 years ago that killed Jackson Police Lt. 
Rudy Fleming, 19, faces charges of murder, robbery and weapon possession. Authorities did not immediately comment on when he would be arraigned or if he had a lawyer.
