Mark Anthony Jones JrMerlyne L. WrayA Flint man who killed an elderly woman when he was 14 was spared life in prison Friday, May 9, becoming the first person sentenced in Genesee County under a new law that gives judges more leeway in juvenile murder cases. Genesee Circuit Judge Archie Hayman sentenced Mark Anthony Jones Jr. Friday, May 9, to (only) 40-60 years in prison after he was convicted of first-degree felony murder for the Nov. 16, 2010, fatal shooting and robbery of 73-year-old Merlyne Wray.     Black rapist wants to take back his serial rape plea
Anthony VaughnKadi CrnkovichOMAHA, Neb. — Anthony Vaughn went back-and-forth with prosecutors the morning his trial in a series of serial rapes was set to begin. In the end, the trial never happened. Vaughn instead struck a deal, changing his not guilty pleas to no contest pleas. Judge Mark Ashford found the 42-year-old guilty -- setting him up for nearly 140 years in prison. "He will be behind bars for the rest of his life," Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine said of the deal. The bargain also meant Vaughn's victims wouldn't have to testify in court. Now, a new court filing shows Vaughn has had a change of heart. The convicted rapist wants the judge to throw out his no contest pleas. He made that intention clear in a letter dated May 2. - (Black-on-white)

2 White U of M students stabbed in northeast Minneapolis by heavyset black male
Alex Mapleblack stabberCrime anywhere is senseless, but when an attacker strikes at one of the busiest intersections in the city of Minneapolis so violently it becomes unnerving. Jesse Garcia said Monday of the stabbing that took place earlier that morning of two 21 year old women. The victims are students at the University of Minnesota and are roommates in the area where they were attacked at University and Hennepin Avenues in northeast Minneapolis. He stabbed her in the back and then proceeded to stab the other female in the arm," Garcia said. The first woman stabbed acted quickly because her roommate was stabbed in an artery that could have killed her, Garcia said. "Her friend got stabbed in the brachial artery.     Rejecting 'retarded' label could cost accused black killer his life
John G. Deloney. Richard EvansJohn Deloney is insulted by a legal definition and won't use it even though it could save his life. "Let's go ahead and start the trial with the death penalty. That's what I want," Deloney told Hamilton County Common Pleas Court Judge Ethna Cooper in a Friday hearing. Deloney, accused of shooting a Hartwell pizzeria owner to death during a June 15 robbery, is upset that his attorneys are trying to prove he's what Ohio law calls "mentally retarded." While many find the term offensive, "mentally retarded" in Ohio law is defined as having an IQ under 70. That could be a lifesaver for Deloney because in Ohio those declared mentally retarded are ineligible for the death penalty. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty against Deloney, accusing him of using a gun to rob Richard Evans, the owner of Cosmic Pizza, and then shoot him as Evans ran away. Evans died minutes later in the front yard of the pizzeria in his wife's arms. - (Black-on-white)

Michael D. Purnell, 45, was convicted in March of second-degree murder, first-degree rape, burglary and possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony. Purnell was arrested in November 2011 after neighbors discovered Dorothy L. Gudger, 70, of the Oak Orchard area, dead in her home. Police said Purnell, who’d done repair work for Gudger, raped her on Oct. 31, 2011, then strangled her with a belt and suffocated her with a plastic bag. At the time, Purnell was a registered sex offender with several previous criminal convictions, including ones on charges of identity theft and escaping from work release. The month before he killed Gudger, he’d been convicted of felony theft from a senior citizen in Kent County, court records show, but a two-year prison sentence for that crime was suspended in lieu of a year of probation. - (Black-on-white)

(Black) Driver Charged After Striking (White) Teen In Police Chase
Asim LieversJoseph ParamoreABERDEEN, Md. — A sixteen-year-old narrowly avoided death when he was struck by a car fleeing police in Harford County. It was a bizarre police chase. The suspect’s vehicle hit a teen and at least two other cars trying to get away. That teen, Joseph Paramore, knows his injuries could have been a lot worse. “Pretty lucky,” he said. Fresh out of the hospital and laid up in bed with a broken femur, scrapes on his hand and crutches by his side, Paramore is in a little pain but remembers everything that happened Sunday night as he rode his skateboard home from a friend’s house. That’s when a car being chased by Aberdeen police came flying down the normally quiet Edmund Street, right by Paramore. “I hear sirens and then I turn around and I see a car and I see him swerving,” he said. “I get hit, I go in the air, I roll a few times and somehow I end up on the grass.” Aberdeen police say it started when officers tried to stop 31-year-old Asim Lievers for speeding along Route 7. The chase passed behind Wal-Mart and eventually into Paramore’s neighborhood. After striking him, the car kept going. “The pursuing officer continued and one officer who was in the area with her stopped and rendered aid,” said Fred Budnick, Aberdeen police. As the pursuit continued, the suspect’s car struck a police car and then hit another vehicle, injuring its one passenger, before Lievers was finally arrested. - (Black-on-white)
