A Hayward man was arrested Saturday on suspicion of kidnapping and attempting to rape a woman in Union City, police said. Gomez allegedly forced the victim into his pickup truck as she was walking to a grocery store on Harder Road near Mission Boulevard about noon, according to Union City Police Sgt. Bruce Harter. A warehouse worker heard the woman's screams and found her fighting off Gomez in the truck, Harter said. Gomez freed the woman and sped off in the truck, he said. The woman, who is also a Hayward resident, did not know Gomez, police said. Harter said witnesses saw Gomez abandon his truck nearby and flag a ride with passing van, which turned out to be driven by someone he knew.
