MAN CHARGED WITH ASSASSINATION OF WHITE CHICAGO POLICE COMMANDER  Opening
arguments are beginning Tuesday in the murder trial of Shomari
Legghette, the man accused of shooting and killing Chicago
Police Commander Paul Bauer.Legghette, who allegedly shot Bauer multiple times in a stairwell near the Thompson Center in downtown Chicago, could face a life sentence if convicted in the case. Before opening arguments began Tuesday, a pair of motions made by defense attorneys were denied, including a motion to dismiss the case because of the “lack of a speedy trial” and a motion to change venue because of the publicity the case had generated. Prosecutors allege that Legghette shot and killed Bauer in a stairwell near the Thompson Center in Feb. 2018. According to witnesses who have testified in pretrial hearings, police originally had tried to stop Legghette after he appeared to be urinating on a wall or pillar on Lower Wacker Drive. Legghette declined to speak with officers and ran off. A short time later, Bauer responded to a radio call of a fleeing suspect and saw Legghette and tried to apprehend him. The two men began to struggle at the top of a stairwell near the Thompson Center and tumbled down to a landing, where Legghette allegedly shot and killed Bauer. Legghette is expected to testify that he acted in self-defense, arguing that he did not know that Bauer was a Chicago police officer, according to the Chicago Tribune. The victim of the crash was 39-year-old Stephanie Anselmo, according to published reports. She leaves behind a husband and son, according to an online fundraising page. Washington was allegedly driving 85 mph in a 55 mph zone when he changed lanes and struck a woman’s Jeep from behind. The Jeep burst into flames and went through a concrete barrier, landing below on Metra tracks, authorities said. She died at the scene. An autopsy found she suffered a broken femur, broken pelvic bone and thermal internal damage from heat, prosecutors said. WAS SHE BURNED ALIVE????  Washington allegedly walked away, prosecutors said. He returned about 20 minutes later and was arrested. Washington allegedly failed a field sobriety test and blew a 0.123 blood-alcohol content in a Breathalyzer test, prosecutors said. man who sexually assaulted a dozen women
has been sentenced to 12 consecutive life sentences, according to
the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office. A Fulton County
judge handed down 56-year-old Dandre Shabazz’s sentence
Tuesday morning, the district attorney’s office confirmed to
AJC.com.“Sir, you’re lucky we live in a civilized society,” said
Fulton County Superior Court Judge Alford Dempsey, according to
Channel 2 Action News. “True justice would be to put you in a
room with your victims and turn them loose on you.”A jury
convicted Shabazz on Wednesday after DNA evidence from previously
untested rape kits linked him to the attacks. It was the second
conviction in five days in Fulton County that involved a lack of
previous rape kit testing. However, those assault kits —
containing Shabazz’s vile DNA — sat untouched for more than
a decade. |

Saturday says it was the passenger who kicked and spit on him

told Eyewitness News. "But at that point, I don't know what
happened."Alale, 51, said he admits he made a mistake spitting on Sapphire Philip, a mother of two. The married father from Nigeria, however, said the cellphone video only tells part of the story, saying he too was assaulted. "I want to apologize to my daughter," he said. "I want to apologize to all my friends. I want to apologize to my friends because that's not the person I am." On Saturday afternoon, Alale was driving the B25 when Philip got on with her two kids and a new stroller. Phillip said she didn't know how to collapse it, and in one photo, she appeared to be sitting in the back blocking the rear exit. Alale said he first made the announcement on the PA that all baby strollers had to be folded for other customers' safety. He said she didn't move. Alale then called transit headquarters, and while on the line, he said she began assaulting him. "She punched me multiple times in the head," he said. "She spat on my face and at that moment, I could not take it no more. I was confused, perplexed, shocked." Philip got off the bus and that's when the driver went after her. Police responded to the incident, but both declined to press charges. The driver said at that point Philip told the officers what she had done. "I just regret getting in his face," she said. "I did get in his face. I regret doing that." Alale insists it was much more than that. |

more than 40 years ago will be eligible for parole. But the victim’s
family says the mere possibility that could happen is a miscarriage
of justice that has victimized the family for decades.25-year-old Frank Carlson was with his wife Annette in their small house in Portrero Hill in San Francisco when an intruder broke in, tied him to a chair and beat him to death with a hammer and a wooden cutting board. “…in what is probably one of the most horrific crimes scenes ever encountered by police,” said Carlson’s younger brother Eric at a news conference on Sunday. “After he was dead, he took my sister-in-law upstairs and raped her repeatedly for hours and hours.” Then, leaving Annette for dead, the killer set fire to the house and left. Miraculously, she survived and a man named Angelo Pavageau, who lived nearby, was tried, convicted and sentenced to death plus 54 years. But two years later, the (pro-minority-criminal) court struck down California’s death penalty and all condemned prisoners at the time were given life with the possibility of parole. At the time there was no such thing as a life sentence without the possibility of parole.   FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) — The two people killed in a triple shooting early Wednesday morning have been identified by the Allen County Coroner’s Office. Fort Wayne police have arrested three people for the crime which left a third person with life-threatening injuries. Mon Ong, 21, of Fort Wayne died from a gunshot wound to the chest and Brooke J. Wendel, 23, died from a gunshot wound to the head. Both deaths have been ruled homicides. According to a department spokesperson, a friend of the victims stopped by 2405 Barnhart Avenue around 12:30 a.m. and found them shot inside the home. Police responded and began providing emergency care to the victims. Medics also responded and pronounced one of the men dead at the scene. Medics took another man and a woman to a hospital in critical condition. The woman later died at the hospital according to the Allen County Coroner’s Office. Just after 3 p.m. Wednesday, police announced they’d arrested three people. Kyaw Hlang, 22, faces 2 counts of Murder and 2 counts of Felony Murder, as well as charges of Robbery, Warrant Probation Violation, and Warrant Violation of Reentry Court. Kerwins Louis, 20, faces two counts of Felony Murder as well as Robbery and Possession of a Controlled Substance. Jamesley Paul, 23, faces two counts of Felony Murder and one count of Robbery. Minneapolis man has been charged in connection to the murder of a
21-year-old mother in St. Paul's Union Park neighborhood early
Wednesday morning.Court documents state 23-year-old Terrion Lamar Sherman has been charged with one count of second-degree murder in Ramsey County. Authorities identified the victim as Abigail Elise Simpson earlier Thursday. Shortly after midnight on Wednesday, St. Paul police officers were sent to an apartment building located on the 300 block of Pierce Street on a report of a domestic disturbance, according to the criminal complaint. The 911 caller told police a man and woman were arguing and that it sounded as if it had become physical and very violent. Upon arrival, officers were allowed inside the building by a tenant. Once they were upstairs, police heard a small child crying and a man, later identified as Sherman, yelling. Officers also said they heard stomping and they heard Sherman yell, "Stay down or I will kill you." Police announced themselves several times, but no one came to the door. The complaint states when officers heard the child stop crying, they breached the door in fear for the child's safety. Officers entered the apartment and saw Sherman covered in blood and standing in the living room. Simpson was found lying face down on the floor, covered in blood and had "significant injuries" to her body. The boy was also located next to Simpson, with blood on his face, torso, pants and shoes. Officers found a knife near Simpson's body at the scene. Sherman followed police commands and allowed himself to be taken into custody. However, while en route to the Ramsey County Law Enforcement Center, Sherman broke out the back window of the squad car that was transporting him. Sherman told police he was on drugs, and medics responded shortly thereafter. Sherman was taken to Regions Hospital and made a statement to police about "hitting the dog" and "punching her head off." The 23-year-old told investigators his nephew "became possessed as a dog," and then claimed Simpson told him "she was a guy." An argument followed, and Sherman claimed Simpson came at him with a knife, so he "punched her head approximately eight times against the cast iron radiator to defend himself." |

insurance company. The investigation began on Feb. 4 when
Southaven police were called to an address on Marcia Louise Drive
for a report of car vandalism. Upon arrival, the owner, 35-year-old
Trumaine Foster, showed officers two cars in his driveway
that had been spray painted with racial slurs including the N-word
and “Trump” written on one of the cars. The investigation
culminated on Friday with the arrest of Foster. He was charged with

In a news release, the Placer County Sheriff’s Office said two men driving a silver pickup truck stopped near a tree-trimming crew that was working on Canyon Way. Two white men, one in his mid 40s and the other in his early 20s, got out of the truck, approached the foreman of the work crew and began insulting him. by his wife, Elisha Pankey.Leland Pankey, 40, was handed out the maximum sentence possible after prosecutors were forced to drop a murder charge when authorities were unable to determine the cause of death for young Caden McWilliams who died sometime in July 2018. Court documents revealed that she allegedly told investigators that her husband kept their son in a dog kennel "a few days" before he died in July at a hotel where the family had been living. An autopsy found signs that the boy was severely emaciated and evidence of injuries to his head, chest and limbs. Some of the injuries showed signs of healing, but authorities were not able to determine how he died. Elisha Pankey previously pleaded guilty to child abuse resulting in death under a plea deal that required her cooperation with prosecutors. She faces between 16 and 32 years in prison when she is sentenced in April. Authorities have not explained why the boy's last name differed from his parents. |

WINDSOR, Orange County (WABC) -- Police in New Windsor arrested a
sex offender for allegedly trespassing at a
nursery school, but he has since been freed under New
York state's new bail reform law.Authorities say 61-year-old Mark Edward Nelson, of Newburgh, entered the facility's fenced-in playground. Two employees of the school and two children were exiting out of the side door to the playground when Nelson allegedly tried to approach them in the darkened area and make contact with them. The women and children then retreated to their vehicle, left the area and called the police. New Windsor police say that Nelson is a Level 3 sex offender in New York State. Level 3 is the most dangerous level. In 1996, he was convicted of sexually assaulting two girls, ages 10 and 11. In this incident, Nelson was located and arrested for third-degree criminal trespass, a misdemeanor. He was released on his own recognizance under the new law that prevents him from being remanded to jail. "A level three offender, who has the most likelihood of reoffending, who had committed the most egregious crimes can lure and try to make contact with young children in a fenced-in area of a schoolyard, of a nursery schoolyard playground, we cannot have fallen any further as a society," Assemblyman Colin Schmitt said. |

Officers found Colon-Molina and Boulnes-Cruz walking in the road, and the duo said they ran out of gas. As officers helped push the car off the bridge, the pair took off running, according to the prosecutor’s office. They were soon arrested and officers discovered a large amount of blood in the vehicle. Investigators also recovered security camera footage that showed Steinberg pull up to the couple’s residence and left with both men, authorities said. Simpson suffered “a series of sharp-force injuries including stab and incision-type wounds” to her scalp, face, neck and lower extremities, the complaint read. A 2-year-old boy, identified by Sherman as his nephew, was next to Simpson’s body and had blood on his face, torso, pants and shoes, the complaint continued. Police said he was taken to the hospital for treatment. Sherman, of Fridley, told police investigators that his nephew “became possessed by a dog and told Sherman that [Simpson] was really a guy,” the complaint read. LEE COUNTY, Fla. — A 23-year-old man who works as a "sitter" for a
Florida hospital is facing charges after getting caught sucking a
sleeping patient's toes, according to arrest records.Frantz Beldorin was arrested early Tuesday morning for battery on a person 65 years or older. The victim, a patient at Gulf Coast Hospital located in Ft. Myers, told the sheriff's office they woke up around 11 p.m. on Monday and felt someone touching their foot, according to records. The victim initially thought it was a nurse checking on them, but it happened two more times, records show. The victim told deputies they felt something wet between their toes during the third incident. When they looked over, the victim said they saw Beldorin on his knees next to the bed and bent over their foot, according to deputies. The victim said they "ripped" their foot away from Beldorin and he went back to the chair he was previously sitting in, according to records. Beldorin is a "sitter" that watches patients throughout the night, according to arrest records. Hospital security called the sheriff's office after the victim reported the incident to a nurse. Beldorin was arrested and taken to the Lee County Jail without incident. At this time, he remains in custody. |

Ala. (WSFA) - An inmate at Easterling Correctional Facility is dead
after an apparent suicide, the Alabama Department of Corrections
confirmed Thursday. An ADOC spokesperson said at around 4 p.m.
Sunday, prison officials found 22-year-old Marquell Underwood unresponsive
in his cell. All attempts at life-saving measures were unsuccessful.
ADOC is investigating the death and an autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death. Underwood was sentenced to life in prison in July 2018 for a murder conviction out of Tuscaloosa County. According to ADOC, he was not on suicide watch. |

a statement.Kareem Abdul Antwon Thomas Jr., 24, pleaded guilty to second degree murder and to robbery last November in Washoe District Court. Judge Barry Breslow sentenced him February 17, 2020 to up to 40 years in prison. Prosecutors said on May 11, 2018, a woman who knew Thomas was driving him home because Thomas was too drunk when Thomas began punching her and struggled with her over two guns she had in her car. The car crashed and Thomas fled with the stolen guns, the district attorney’s office said. On May 14, 2018, Thomas and a woman with him passed in front of a car in which Michael Frost, 31, was a passenger. It was at an apartment complex on Greenbrae Drive at Sullivan Lane. Thomas and his friend walked slowly so the driver of the car with Frost revved the engine, prompting Thomas to yell at Frost. The driver then passed Thomas and the woman with Thomas twice more while driving around the complex and the second time Thomas pulled out a gun and shot several rounds at the car, hitting Frost in the chest. The gun used in the shooting was stolen three days earlier, and the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms recovered it in California in 2019. Alicia Clarke said exactly a week ago she went for a quick run outside her south city home. When she came back, she noticed her shoes had been moved to a different spot and her cell phone was gone. From there, she used Find My iPhone to search for it. The location said it was on her property grid. She used her work phone to call it. "I open my back door to call it and I hear it in my neighbor's backyard behind me," Clarke said. Clarke said she hopped the fence to get it and jumped back over to her yard. Another neighbor yelled out to her and said, "Hey, I told him, 'I know you did this and I’m calling the police!'" Clarke said that's when the 6-foot teen jumped the fence and tackled her. "He knocked me down, pulling my hair, kicking," she recalled. Before he ran off, she said he grabbed her personal cell phone again. She used her work phone to call police. "I am on the phone with St. Louis police dispatch, making my way to my backdoor, when he comes back with a weapon. He is on top of me. There was blood everywhere. I was literally fighting for my life at that point." Clarke said as he was on her back, he stabbed her in the head and face with a metal rod. She was able to get the weapon out of his hand and ran inside. He ran away again, taking her second cell phone this time.  Police
arrested the teen on charges of first-degree robbery,
second-degree burglary and third-degree assault.Clarke thought the fight was over. But when she went to juvenile court a few days later, she learned his case was dismissed. "The most hurtful thing of all of this, is the dropped charges. That was much more hurtful than the physical assault," Clarke said. A juvenile court official said a staff attorney dropped the case before even going to the judge. The courts weren't able to comment specifically on this incident, since it involves a juvenile. When they arrived, officers found 22-year-old Kayla Winkler and 24-year-old Ramek Bass in the hallway outside an apartment on the seventh floor. Both were suffering from gunshot wounds and were rushed to Cooper University Medical Center in Camden. Winkler was pronounced dead at the hospital. The school bus driver accused of fatally mowing down a 10-year-old
girl in Brooklyn early Tuesday has been arrested, police said.Pedro Colon, 61, was slapped with charges of failure to yield to a pedestrian and failure to exercise due care for the 6:45 a.m. collision that left little Patience Albert dead, cops said. Patience and her brother were on their way to school when she was fatally struck at the intersection of Wortman Avenue and Crescent Street in East New York, witnesses and police said. When authorities arrived on scene, they found Patience lying unconscious in the street with severe body trauma and her 15-year-old brother with a leg injury. Witnesses said the boy had glass in his bleeding leg. |
