(Negro) Evansville murder suspect in court for murder of (White) woman) EVANSVILLE, IN — The man facing a murder charge in the death of Jamie Baker made his first court appearance Thursday morning. Deryan Cook, 20, faced a judge by video conference from the jail. During the hearing Cook told the judge, "It was not me." He also said, "I was in the wrong place at the wrong time." Cook told the judge he understood the charges against him and claimed he knows who killed Baker. The 40-year-old Evansville woman was shot in the back while walking on Cass Avenue around 2:00 a.m. Monday. According to a police affidavit released Thursday morning, Baker was walking with a friend to get a battery for his truck. The friend says a man with "an angry look in his eye" walked passed them, then started to follow them. Baker's friend says the man yelled for them to get on the ground. That's when he says he told Baker to run, and he heard several gunshots. When the friend looked back, he says he saw the shooter running away. The friend says he fell to the ground next to Baker and called 911. Police say surveillance video supports the friend's story. Authorities say a witness who saw police on Cass Avenue after the shooting, later ran into a man he knows only as "Doc." He says Doc told him he shot a girl four times, or he "lit off four clips and had five left." The witness told authorities it was a .40 caliber pistol, which matches the caliber and number of shots used to kill Baker. Police were able to track down Cook by his nickname and address given to them by the witness. They say he was found at Kinway Apartments Wednesday with several other people. One of those people told officers Cook had a .40 caliber gun, but had gotten rid of it. Police say Baker's friend was able to pick Cook out of a lineup. Officers say Cook first denied any involvement, but then admitted to following Baker and her friend until the shots were fired. He denies it was was him who pulled the trigger. Cook says another man was waiting to jump out and rob Baker and her friend. He's due back in court Tuesday morning. - (Black-on-white) |

Some have resorted to doing their business on the floor or outdoors, others have used showers, and many migrants will have never seen toilet paper before. The issue caused some serious confusion last year, with one small German village being accused of racism after issuing leaflets politely asking migrants to use to the correct facilities. |

'Why is he doing this?' Broadmoor child rape accuser recalls thinking A Broadmoor teenager wept briefly Thursday while describing to a New Orleans jury the confusion, pain and fear she felt more than four years ago when she said she was raped by a visiting relative at the age of 12. "I was just wondering, like, 'Why is he doing this?'" said the girl, now 16. "It's something I have to deal with for the rest of my life. It's hard to think about how could a family member do this to you?" The girl avoided eye contact with Henry Campbell, except when asked to identify the relative sitting at the defense table of Criminal District Judge Arthur Hunter's courtroom, whom she said sexually assaulted her around 3 a.m. on March 5, 2013. The girl's mother was away working an overnight shift as a nursing assistant, and others in the house - two older siblings and two adult family friends - did not hear the alleged attack, authorities said. Campbell, 22, faces a mandatory life sentence if convicted of the aggravated rape, a crime renamed first-degree rape in state statutes revised since his arrest more than four years ago. |

Robert Melson: Alabama Man Executed for Killing Three Fast-Food Workers ATMORE, Ala. — A man convicted of killing three people during the 1994 robbery of an Alabama fast-food restaurant was put to death Thursday by lethal injection. Robert Melson, 46, was pronounced dead at 10:27 p.m. CDT Thursday at a southwest Alabama prison, authorities said. The execution was the state's second of the year. State prosecutors said Melson and another man who used to work at the restaurant, robbed a Popeye's in Gadsden, 60 miles northeast of Birmingham, and Melson opened fire on four employees in the restaurant's freezer. Nathaniel Baker, Tamika Collins and Darrell Collier were killed. The surviving employee, Bryant Archer, crawled for help and was able to identify one of the robbers as the former worker which led police to Melson. Collins' family members wore a badge with her photograph and the phrase "In Our Hearts Forever." Her family issued a statement saying that three young people lost their lives for "a few hundred dollars" and criticized court filings on behalf of Melson that challenged the state's execution procedure as inhumane. Collins' mother and two sisters witnessed the execution. "He has been on death row for over 21 years being supported by the state of Alabama and feels he should not suffer a little pain during the execution. What does he think those three people suffered after he shot them, leaving them in a freezer?" the statement said. |
