Troy James Williams will have to serve more than 24 years before he can qualify for parole. Officer Shawn Bakr was shot in the shoulder in January 2016 when he disrupted an armed robbery attempt by three men while he was working off-duty security at the Red Lobster restaurant at Markham Street and Rodney Parham Road. The three men entered the restaurant just before its 10 p.m. closing with hoodies pulled tight over their heads, obscuring their faces, police said. Bakr had been eating dinner in the bar next to the restaurant's foyer. One robber held a gun to the manager's head, and the three robbers were taking the restaurant workers to the rear of the eatery to get to the safe when they saw Bakr, who was in uniform. Bakr pulled his weapon, but Williams was the first to shoot, striking the officer in the shoulder, according to police testimony on Monday. The wounded officer chased two of the men into the parking lot, shooting one of them in the buttocks. Fellow officers had two of the suspects, Williams, and his younger brother, Joshua Lamont Williams, 18, in custody by the next morning. Their cousin, Kenneth Lavell "Bam Bam" Nelson, was arrested two days after the shooting after a three-hour standoff with police that ended when officers used tear gas to get him to come out of his grandmother's home. - (Black-on-white) |

Priest tells anti-Trump protesters to commit suicide The pastor of a largely immigrant Catholic church in Queens has a suggestion for his anti-Trump parishioners: Go take a flying leap off the nearest building. “Show your hate for Trump. Do it for social justice. #JumpAgainstTrump,” read a meme posted by the Rev. Philip Pizzo just hours after he celebrated Sunday Mass. The message included an illustration of a man plummeting from a skyscraper. The conservative priest, who oversees St. Benedict Joseph Labre Roman Catholic Church in Richmond Hill, previously posted a photo of President Obama with the words “He’s not my president’’ and another snapshot of Hillary Clinton titled “Ugly Face’’ in Italian along with “Happy Halloween.’’Pizzo, 67, told The Post on Monday that he just thought the “Jump Against Trump’’ meme was “funny.” “I do not promote suicide,’’ Pizzo insisted. “I’ve helped many people over the years, and it does not promote suicide. It was funny.” But some parishioners were outraged. |

Police warn anyone helping cold case murder suspect will be arrested A Calcasieu Parish grand jury indicted a man on Thursday in a 14-year-old murder case. Today, the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office issued a press release stating that anyone caught helping Young will be arrested and charged with aiding and abetting a fugitive. McKartney Young, 31, was charged with second-degree murder in connection with the 2003 death of Misty Guillory. Police say Young is now a fugitive. If anyone has any information regarding Young, please contact the Lake Charles Police Department at 491-1311. Guillory was 15 when she died. Prosecutors say Young was driving a car with two other passengers when he passed Guillory, who was walking on Prien Lake Road. He picked her up, prosecutors allege, and tried to sexually assault her. She was able to get away, but as she was fleeing Young ran her over with his vehicle, prosecutors say. Back in 2003, Young was arrested and indicted. However, after prosecutors found conflicting statement among witnesses, the charges were dismissed. The case was re-opened last year after new evidence surfaced. A warrant has been issued for the arrest of defendant and a "no bond" bond has been set by Judge Thomas Quirk. Any person or persons discovered to be helping McKartney Young evade arrest shall themselves be arrested for aiding and abetting a fugitive. - (Black-on-white) |

(Black) Robber Gets Life Sentence in (White) Woman's Death After Home Invasion A man accused of scaring an elderly woman so much during an eastern Pennsylvania home-invasion robbery that she had a heart attack that night and died two months later has been sentenced to a life in prison without possibility of parole. Jurors in Northampton County convicted Quadir Taylor two weeks ago of second-degree murder, robbery, burglary, criminal conspiracy and related offenses. Taylor acknowledged helping others rob 76-year-old Carrie Smith in her Wilson home in January 2012. But his attorneys disputed a forensic pathologist's conclusion that the heart attack caused her eventual death, pointing instead to her failing constitution. Authorities said Taylor and one of his co-defendants accosted the sleeping woman, grabbed her by the hair and made her open a safe from which they took $35,000 in cash and $18,000 in jewelry. |

(Black) Detroit pastor falls from grace, gets prison for fraud run from church Growing up, Pastor Julius Baker lost his father to prison and a brother to violence. Years later, he lost his church to money troubles, then his house. Along the way, he lost himself. In a fall-from-grace story that landed a onetime aspiring Detroit preacher behind bars for 3½ years, the federal government wrapped up a two-year-old fraud case this month involving four men who ran a $555,000 credit card fraud ring through a church and wreaked havoc on the lives of more than 100 people whose accounts were compromised. Among the schemers was Baker, who, according to prosecutors and his lawyer, slipped in his faith and broke the law to make money. He did this, prosecutors said, by using a credit card terminal at his church to swipe tens of thousands of dollars in bogus transactions that steered money into his own pockets. |

(White) Ukiah man to face murder trial in killing of (black) homeless man A Ukiah man who claimed self-defense after shooting to death a young homeless man near his home was ordered to stand trial for murder following a preliminary hearing Friday in Mendocino County Superior Court. Judge John Behnke also found there was sufficient evidence to try Steven Ryan, 62, on a special allegation of using a firearm — a .45 caliber semiautomatic Springfield pistol — to kill DeShaun Davis, 20. Ryan, a disabled former dock worker, told police he was defending himself when he shot Davis on Nov. 21 following an argument that began about 11:20 a.m. after he found the man outside his rented home on a vineyard property. He told investigators Davis appeared to be intoxicated, claimed to be armed and threatened to kill him. He was coming at him clutching at his clothing as though grabbing for a weapon when he fired his gun, according to court testimony. Ryan is a Navy veteran. He is disabled from a back injury from his time working on ship docks. He uses an implanted morphine pump to ease his pain. . Ryan’s next court appearance is Feb. 10 to be arraigned on the charges. A trial date has not yet been set. |

Evil jungle beast black rapist, sexual deviant and killer who murdered a White woman seeks new sentence or release Kevin Stanford, who was sentenced to death in 1982 for one of Louisville’s most notorious murders — then had his sentenced commuted to life without parole by Gov. Paul Patton because he was only 17 at the time of the crime — is now asking to be freed from prison. Stanford, now 53, filed a petition this week in federal court in Louisville demanding a new sentencing hearing or the nullification of his sentence. Mona Mills, the sister of Stanford’s victim, Barbel Poore, said in an interview Friday that she doesn’t buy Stanford’s rehabilitation. He is a sexual deviant and a killer,” she said. “He needs to never come out, ever, and pray tell he doesn’t.” On Jan. 7, 1981, Stanford and David Buchanan, then 16, for 45 minutes took turns sodomizing and raping Poore, 20, a single mother, who was working alone in the Cheker Oil Co. station. Stanford drove Poore a few blocks away in her mother's 1973 Chevrolet Impala, where he let her smoke a final cigarette, then fired two shots from a .38-caliber pistol into her head and face, leaving her body in the back seat with her pants pulled down around her ankles, her buttocks exposed. Then he returned to the station, stealing 300 cartons of cigarettes, lighters and $143 in cash. In 1992, he was placed in disciplinary segregation for six months for sexually sodomizing another inmate. - (Black-on-white) |
