(Black) Aspiring Christian rapper convicted of murder of (White) music producer in Md. ROCKVILLE, Md. – An aspiring Christian rap artist claims he did not intend to kill his estranged music producer, despite driving his Saab sedan into the 21-year-old at around 40 miles per hour, killing him almost instantly. Naivety was the crux of Ryan Salandy’s defense during closing arguments Friday inside Montgomery County Circuit Court. Salandy’s simple, yet somewhat perplexing stance, made members of the victim’s family shake their heads in disbelief. It also caused homicide detectives, originally assigned to the case, chuckle at the straw grasping defense strategy. Last year, Salandy, 26, hired William McDaniel, 25, to burn 150 CDs containing his gospel rap tunes. Salandy paid McDaniel $300. However, a dispute over the work arose. - (Black-on-white) |

(Black female) Saraya Atkins guilty of capital murder in 2014 robbery, shooting (of White man) A jury in Mobile County has found 22-year-old Saraya Atkins guilty of capital murder, robbery and theft in the 2014 shooting death of Robert Perry, 66. Police say Atkins and another woman, Kymberli Lindsay, 27 robbed and then killed Perry. Perry was shot to death on March 11, 2014. As the jury deliberated on a verdict, D.A. Ashley Rich consoled the nine family members of Perry as they waited for the jury's decision. Atkins' eight family members sat shoulder to shoulder in the rows across from Perry's. Before the jury gave the verdict, five police officers came into the courtroom and filled the middle rows in case there was an emotional out burst from family members. After the verdict was read and the judge dismissed the jurors, Atkins put her head down and burst into tears. After she was led out with officers, she could be heard crying loudly in the hallway near the judges' chambers. - (Black-on-white) |

(BLACK man) Keene Found Guilty Of Murder (of White man with pacemaker) Donald Ray Gunter's family believes justice was served Friday when a jury in Greene County Criminal Court found Mario Donte Keene guilty of first-degree murder for causing Gunter's death on Feb. 11, 2014. Keene will receive a life sentence totaling 60 years. The minimum amount of time the 42-year-old must serve before parole is considered will be 51 years. Keene was also convicted by the jury of especially aggravated burglary and especially aggravated kidnapping. He will also be sentenced for those felonies on Oct. 21. Jurors deliberated for about six hours Thursday afternoon and Friday morning before returning a guilty verdict on all counts. Co-defendant Amanda Kate Harris, 30, is currently serving a 25-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to second-degree murder in May for her role in Gunter's death. Harris testified at trial for the state and said Keene was responsible for inflicting wounds on Gunter with a collapsible metal rod after she stole Gunter's money and tried to run out the back door. The motive was money for drugs. Harris and Keene needed cash to feed their habits. "Dope sick" Harris knew Gunter and had previously spent time at his Old Mountain Road house. Harris testified that Gunter let her in his house and wanted her to spend the night. When she tried to run out of the house with money she stole from him, the partially clothed Gunter pursued Harris and caught hold of her hair, causing her to slip on the porch. She screamed, and Keene came running. Harris testified that Keene ran up on the porch and struck Gunter in the face with a collapsible metal rod before dragging him into the house. Trial testimony established that Gunter recently had a pacemaker implanted in his chest and had survived several previous heart surgeries. |
