(White) University Park Mother Recalls Gas Station Robbery - a black female held a knife to her 7-year-old son's throat DALLAS – University Park Police have issued a warrant for Brittany Giles, 26, accusing her of holding a knife to a 7-year-old boy’s throat. The boy’s mother, Emily Smith, says she stopped at the Snider Plaza Shell station January 29 to fill up when her path crossed with Giles. She was sitting in the car with her children, when she heard the pump click and got out to return the nozzle. “The gas station attendant started yelling, ‘Hey! Hey!’ ” Smith remembers. “Then I hear someone scream, ‘You’re getting robbed!’ ” Smith spotted her 4-year-old daughter safe in the back seat, and ran to the passenger seat where she’d left 7 year old son had been playing with the radio. “The only thing I saw was him shaking,” she says. “All he could say was ‘Knife. Knife. Knife at my throat. I’m sorry mommy. I’m so sorry. She took your purse. I didn’t know what else to do.’ ” Smith says the woman had opened the passenger door and ordered her son to hand over her purse. He sat perfectly still, though, prompting her to lean across him to grab it herself. When the woman heard the attendant’s screams, she turned, pushing the knife against the boy’s throat. “That’s when he said the knife started going in. He had a tiny little indention. Not cut, not physically harmed, but just a tiny little indention in his precious 7 year old neck,” says Smith. Police say Giles is a criminal known for changing her name and appearance. Surveillance cameras show her at Northpark mall, where police say she charged more than $13,000 to Smith’s stolen credit card. Police have arrested the suspected get away driver, Tiffany James, but Smith wants to see Giles put away too. “I want her to be behind bars. I want her to be held accountable for her actions. So it would give our entire family some peace of mind.” - (Black-on-white) |

Derrick Hope, 56, was charged with robbing Burt and four other victims in Surfside and Coral Gables. Police said Burt’s credit card was used to charge more than $6,000 worth of items at a department store. “It took a lot out of me. What this guy did to me, he was able to get my wallet out of my pocket. I didn’t know how it happened, it happened so quick,” Burt recalled. Elaine Killeen was one of three victims in Surfside. “When I reached the counter I found I had no wallet. I was devastated,” she remembered as she attempted to pay for her groceries. Friday there was no discussion about whether Lauramore Barton could still face more charges in Lonzie’s death. (White) Family fighting to keep 1-year-old son’s (black) killer behind bars WEST MIFFLIN, Pa. — A local couple whose son was shot and killed outside a gas station in 1997 is fighting to keep their 1-year-old’s killer behind bars. “You just wonder what life would be like, because he was such a joy,” Mary Beth Hacke said of her murdered son, Ryan Hacke. “He was smiling all the time.” After doing so in 2014, Ryan’s parents are again requesting that their son’s convicted killer stay in prison. At 14 months old in January 1997, Ryan was struck by a bullet in the eye and died days later. His parents were switching cars near a Homestead gas station when Vaughn Mathis unloaded a semi-automatic pistol. A jury convicted Mathis of involuntary manslaughter in Ryan’s death, well below a charge of first-degree homicide, which prosecutors were seeking. “We will go in front of the parole board, and put our hearts on the table and say Ryan Hacke's life mattered,” Mary Beth Hacke said. This month, Mathis is again eligible for parole. He served a minimum sentence not only doing time for Ryan’s killing, but also for raping a woman. The Hackes want him in jail for the full sentence of 43 years. “I grieve every day of my life for my precious Ryan. I'll always woner what life would have been like with Ryan here,” Mary Beth Hacke said. A hearing for Mathis is set for March 17. The Hackes continue to work as hard as they can to have parole denied and keep him locked up. So far, the family has gathered 1,200 signatures in favor of having Mathis’ parole denied. Muslim Egyptian student in hot water after posting Trump threat ORANGE, Calif. -- A flight student from Egypt is facing deportation from the United States after being investigated by federal agents for posting on his Facebook page that he was willing to serve a life sentence for killing Donald Trump and that the world would thank him. While U.S. prosecutors have not charged 23-year-old Emadeldin Elsayed with a crime, immigration authorities arrested him last month at the Los Angeles-area flight school he attended and now are trying to deport him. Elsayed said he wrote the message because he was angered by Trump's comments about Muslims. Remember the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks, which were carried out by Muslims who had sought flight training in the United States. |

2 (black) robbers sentenced to 60 years in deadly shootout at popular St. Louis police hangout - that left White woman dead ST. LOUIS • Two men who stormed into a St. Louis bar in 2014 and triggered a deadly shootout were sentenced Tuesday morning to 60 years in prison. St. Louis Circuit Judge Elizabeth Hogan followed terms of a plea agreement by sentencing Derreaun Davis, 21, and Corey Wade, 30, both of St. Louis, to two consecutive life sentences — or up to 60 years in prison — with the possibility of parole. Davis and Wade pleaded guilty Monday to second-degree murder and 31 other counts of assault, attempted robbery and armed criminal action stemming from a robbery attempt that turned into a shootout at Pooh’s Corner. The watering hole is popular with St. Louis police officers. Police said that Davis, Wade and another man entered the bar about 10:55 p.m. on Dec. 2, 2014, ordering people to the floor. One of the robbers fired a shot into the ceiling. A retired St. Louis officer who was having a drink at the bar shot and wounded Davis and Wade. A third suspect was later arrested but never charged in the crime. During the gunfire, authorities say one of the three robbers shot bar patron Diana Lawrence, 63, in the back of the head. Lawrence, of St. Louis, died the next day. Three other people in the bar, including the retired officer, were injured in the shootout. - (Black-on-white) |

Judge to (black) cop-shooter: ‘You will never step foot outside of a prison before you die’ A Queens judge lashed into a cop-hating career criminal who opened fire on a heavily decorated NYPD sergeant, sentencing him to 55 years to life after disdainfully chiding, “You will never step foot outside of a prison before you die.” “Who are you, to take a gun, and try to kill a New York City Police Officer?” Judge Gregory Lasak jeered at shooter John Thomas Wednesday before a courtroom packed with cops, many of who smiled at the jab. His intended target, Sgt. Craig Bier, sat front and center, beaming. “You could have gotten away, but you shot me, and that tells me two things,” the still active sergeant said. “The first is that you’re an idiot– and you made a bad choice — and the second is that you’re a menace to my brothers and sisters in blue, and to everyone else in New York City.” - (Black-on-white) |
