2 (blacks) now charged in shooting of (White) lottery winner LOUISVILLE, KY - Two men have been arrested in connection with the shooting of another man moments after he won $1,000 on a lottery scratch-off ticket. Investigators said they were booking one suspect into Metro Corrections, and then hours later, a second person was arrested in the Feb. 7 shooting that took place near Churchill Downs. Arrest reports for Andrel Page, 21, and James Watts, 40, state that both suspects admitted to being involved in the shooting. Page is charged with robbery and assault. Watts is charged with facilitation of robbery. "The lottery is a very big business here," Patricia Manning of the store where her 19-year-old son bought his ticket. Any day of the week, any time, you'll find someone at the Marathon Station on Taylor Boulevard buying a lottery ticket. And just a few weeks ago, Manning's son turned a $5 scratch-off into a $1,000 winner. "He called me on the phone," Manning said. "He said, 'Mom, I just won $1,000 on a lottery ticket.'" Added store owner Mehr Dad: "He was so excited to get $1,000. It was big money for him." In a matter of minutes, however, pure joy turned into anguish, and a mother heard it all play out on the phone. "The next thing I heard was some yelling and then a loud noise which I know now was a gunshot," Manning said. "He shot my son in a flat second." Dad said he's certain a man inside heard the young man celebrating the win. "I believe that someone was standing over here and I believe his partner was sitting outside in the car and when (the victim) left, I believe they followed him out," he said. The shooting took place steps away from the store on Longfield Avenue. "The guy was asking him for his lottery ticket, and when he turned around, the guy had a gun and shot him," Manning said. "So my son took the ticket out of his pocket and threw it on the ground and said, 'You didn't have to shoot me, dude.'" As for Manning’s son, his recovery continues. "We got the staples out (Tuesday), so maybe he can stand up straighter," she said. Manning said she's thankful her son feels better and thankful to the lottery as well. She said the agency helped police and honored her son's winning ticket because it was scanned and signed. "The lottery went above and beyond," she said. Manning said she's also thankful to a neighbor who rushed out with a towel to stop the bleeding, and a man who also saw the commotion and pulled over to help her son. - (Black-on-white) |

2 teens charged in Rock Hill, S.C., puppy shooting Rock Hill, S.C., Police have arrested two teenagers they say tortured a 6-week-old puppy by shooting it nearly 20 times with a BB gun and throwing a knife at it. The suspects, ages 14 and 17, were arrested Tuesday and charged with cruelty to animals, according to Capt. Mark Bollinger. De’Monte Ty’Juan Douglas, 17, was placed in the Rock Hill city jail, where he remained without bond Tuesday afternoon. Per state law, the 14-year-old’s identity is protected because of his age. A few minutes later, the worker went to check on the puppy and saw it was “bleeding heavily” from multiple wounds, police have said. Bodies found in Detroit home believed to be missing (White) girl who prompted AMBER Alert - black ex-con 'boyfriend' wanted Two bodies found inside a house on Detroit's east side are believed to be that of a missing 4-year-old girl and her mother. According to police, an AMBER Alert was issued for 4-year-old Savannah Walker just after 2 a.m. Saturday. The home is about 3.5 miles from where Savannah was last seen. The other body is believed to be Savannah's mother. That AMBER Alert is still active. Michigan State Police are looking for 33-year-old Marcus Hightower. He's described as a black male, with brown eyes and black hair. Police have recovered the black Ford Explorer they were looking for as part of a second investigation on the city's east side. Detroit Police Chief James Craig said the investigation started Tuesday when the family of the mother and Savannah reported them missing in Livingston County. It is believed the two were taken from Howell to Detroit. According to Craig, there were indications that something more should have been done by Livingston County and there was a communication delay. The woman's other daughter went to the Brighton Michigan State Police post on Friday afternoon to get more help. With the information given, and a history of domestic violence with Hightower, they put out an AMBER Alert around 2 a.m. Saturday. Craig said the bodies were found in an abandoned home on a lower level. Fire crews received the call around 5 a.m. Hightower has a criminal history, and is currently out on parole for Assault with Intent to Commit Murder. - (Black-on-white) |

Two NYPD cops wounded in possible friendly fire incident after wild Brooklyn car chase, shootout with suspect armed with .357 Magnum Two Brooklyn cops were wounded early Saturday in a wild car chase and shootout with a gun-toting suspect who slammed his vehicle head-on into a patrol car, police said. One of the injured cops survived when a bullet fired by the suspect slammed into his bullet-proof vest during the 3 a.m. gunfight, which ended with the wanted man shot several times. Jamal Funes, 34, opened fire on the eight officers who surrounded his crashed Nissan Maxima shortly after he pointed a .357 Magnum at cops and sped off around 3 a.m. in Bedford-Stuyvesant, police said. The investigation now indicates one or both of the wounded officers were struck by friendly fire as the cops unloaded more than 30 shots at the suspect’s car, said NYPD spokesman Stephen Davis. Six of the eight officers blasted back at Funes, who had the gun in his hand when the smoke finally cleared. The two wounded plainclothes anti-crime officers were identified by sources as William Reddin and Andrew Yurkiw, who suffered blunt force trauma when the bullet hit his vest. |

We were both caught off guard,” Deangelo Gaines said of the Sunday incident. “I don’t know.” Gaines said that he had placed his .45-caliber handgun on his bed. He said he and his girlfriend, Kayla Babick, were lying on the bed together when the gun fired. “I’m sitting there, just on my phone, and I hear a gunshot and she jumps up,” he said. “I’m like, my gun just went off.” Babick was shot in the abdomen. She rushed downstairs, Gaines following her. “I raced down there after her and she’s laying on the floor,” he remembered. “I pick her up. My mom gives me a towel. I put it on her wound. I’m rubbing her hair and I’m trying to talk to her and let her know that I was here. And I was like, ‘Can you hear me?’ And I felt her head nod a little bit. And she took a deep breath, and she just stopped breathing.” Babick, 24, left behind two children. Her funeral is scheduled for Feb. 21.
