(White) Houston PD officer shot (by black thug) in northeast Houston; 2 arrested
Jason RhodesShelton HeraldHOUSTON - A Houston police officer was shot in northeast Houston on Tuesday while attempting to stop a robbery, police said. Officer Jason Rhodes, 32, who was shot in the arm, was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital in stable condition. He was released from the hospital late Tuesday afternoon. With the bullet still in his arm, we're told Rhodes is in good condition and expected to make a full recovery and have full use of his arm. Houston police Chief Charles McClelland said during a press conference Tuesday that Rhodes saw two people just after noon with their faces covered outside a Family Dollar store. The two appeared to be getting ready to rob the store. Rhodes chased the men, and during the pursuit, shots were exchanged, the chief said. "The black man, he fell down after he jumped the gate and he shot the police officer," witness Alexandra Celestine said. At least one juvenile was arrested at the scene. The suspect was caught hiding in a shed in a resident's back yard near the Family Dollar where the incident began. A second suspect, Shelton Herald, 27, was caught by a K-9 unit in a heavily wooded area. He has a lengthy criminal record dating back to 2008, court records show. He is also a registered sex offender. "The ruthless thugs out here that are trying to take property, take things from individuals who work hard and are honest, hard-working people, and they want to take a short cut in our society and take property that belongs to others," " McClelland said. "(Rhodes) did a very good job out there. We're fortunate that he wasn't more seriously injured or possibly killed in this incident. It also highlights the danger that the men and women of HPD face every single day of trying to keep this city safe." - (Black-on-white)

(White) Woman Pushed Onto SEPTA Tracks Speaks About Random (black) Attack
Kenneth GrimesLauren LichtmanPHILADELPHIA — 27-year-old Lauren Lichtman says when she accidentally went past her usual 34th Street El stop Sunday morning on her way to work, she got off at the next stop, 40th Street, to head back. It was a decision that changed her life. Police say Lichtman, in a random attack, was shoved onto the El tracks by suspect Kenneth Grimes, who then pulled a knife and, as she sprawled injured on the tracks, threatened her, yelling, “kill, kill, kill.” Lichtman, who suffered a broken collar-bone and bruises, said she was “lucky” and her injuries could have been far, far worse. Fortunately, no train was approaching and she was able to climb back onto the platform. She also did not contact the electrified third rail that runs along side the track. The victim says none of the passengers waiting on the platform helped her from the tracks and, instead of staying to provide statements to arriving officers, they boarded the next train, leaving her alone on the platform. - (Black-on-white)

As the victim suffered shoulder injuries and lay sprawled across the track, she looked up and saw the suspect now with a knife, allegedly threatening to kill her. “He’s yelling at her ‘kill, kill, kill’ and he’s got a knife in his hand,” Lt.     US Supreme Court won't review appeal of NH's only death row inmate - Michael Addison convicted of killing (White) police officer
Michael AddisonMichael BriggsThe U.S. Supreme Court has declined to review a petition from New Hampshire's only death row inmate to review his case. Lawyers for Michael Addison, 35, said the trial judge violated his rights by not allowing jurors to hear evidence he was remorseful and concerned about the Manchester police officer he shot in 2006 -- Michael Briggs -- after he was taken into custody. In a petition filed last year, they also challenged the judge's conduct in letting jurors hear about privileges a convict sentenced to life in prison without possibility of parole might get behind bars, including television and work opportunities. The court issued its one-sentence decision Jan. 11; it was released Tuesday. The New Hampshire Supreme Court upheld Addison's conviction in 2013 and ruled the death sentence was fair earlier this year, when compared to other cases in which an officer was killed in the line of duty. On Oct. 16, 2006, Addison was wanted by police for a string of violent crimes, including several armed robberies and a drive-by shooting. Briggs was 15 minutes from the end of his shift when he and his partner -- both on bicycle patrol -- confronted Addison in a dark alley. Jurors found that Addison shot Briggs in the head at close range to avoid arrest. - (Black-on-white)

Lewis was already serving nine years for the Charlotte robbery when he was given the extra 25-year sentence. Incident reports state officers tried knocking on the door of the home to serve the warrant, but used a loud speaker when no one came to the door. Lewis' girlfriend, 21-year-old Kirstie Elaine Philomena Barratt, came to the door and told officers she had not seen Lewis for two months. She also gave them permission to search the home. The reports state that Lewis was found in an upstairs bedroom soon after officers entered the house, and there was an exchange of gunfire. Page and Lewis were both injured in the shooting. Page was shot in the shoulder and abdomen. Lewis was shot in the leg and sustained minor injuries. In court Wednesday, Lewis said Page shot first. He said he was pointing his gun at the officer and did return fire. Page had to have surgery but has since made a full recovery. - (Black-on-white)

3-year-old girl was kept in closet, offered for sex - by Hispanic male prostitute and child pimp
Mayra Yomali Solis, Fransisco Javier Rios-CovarrubiasMESA, Ariz. — Police in a Phoenix suburb are investigating a child-abuse case in which a 3-year-old malnourished girl was bound with duct tape, kept in a trash sack inside closet and offered for sex by a man babysitting the child, officials said Tuesday. “This is just one of those cases that just shocks the soul,” Mesa Police Chief John Meza said. Police said the man was arrested Monday, along with the girl’s mother, who is accused of shaving her daughter’s head to get money by claiming the girl had cancer. The girl had duct tape around her mouth, hands, arms and legs, was wearing only a diaper and a T-shirt, was covered in feces and had multiple bruises, scratches and blisters on her body, Meza said. Injuries in the genital area indicated the girl had been sexually abused, and she was too weak to stand on her own, according to Meza. Police said Francisco Rios Covarrubias, 30, was arrested on suspicion of sex trafficking and other crimes, while the girl’s 22-year-old mother was arrested on suspicion of child abuse. Meza said officers found the girl after a man called police to report seeing the girl when he went to the apartment to have consensual sex with the male suspect. Covarrubias offered to allow the man to have sex with the child, but the man declined, Meza said.

  • British Prime Minister Criticized For Stigmatizing Muslim Women
British Prime Minister David Cameron caused an outcry on Monday for appearing to single out Muslims in a new policy that could break up migrant families if newcomers to the U.K. do not learn English. Migrants entering the United Kingdom on a spousal visa will be required to pass an English language test two and a half years after arriving in the country -- or else face deportation, Cameron wrote in an op-ed for The Times outlining his new policy. While migrants from anywhere in the world would be subject to the language test, Cameron emphasized in his article that 190,000 Muslim women in Britain speak little or no English, despite having lived in the U.K. for years.
