(Bisexual black) Sex fiend gets to 25 to life for two-decades-old cold case A repeat sex offender was sentenced to 25 years to life Wednesday for the two-decades-old rape and murder of a pregnant Harlem woman after DNA evidence linked him to the cold case. As part of a plea deal, Melvin Kelly, 58, copped to fatally strangling five-months-pregnant Isabelle Joye on a rooftop on May 18, 1994. Hours later, a young boy stumbled on the woman’s half-naked body. Kelly left behind his DNA on two tissues and under her fingernails, but the crime remained unsolved for years until new forensic techniques were used to test the samples and produce a genetic profile. That profile was then uploaded to the New York State DNA Databank, where it matched Kelly, who had been convicted of a 2004 sexual assault of a man in Greenwich Village. He’s already serving 25 years to life on that case. |

(White) St. Paul mom's slaying was first of violent spree - charges against 3 blacks and a girlfriend A night of terror began in St. Paul and ended in Minneapolis on a Sunday in October, with suspects confronting nine people at gunpoint, killing two of them, the Hennepin County attorney announced Tuesday after weeks of investigation. The attacks appeared random. The first to die was Sarah Anne Wierstad, a 24-year-old mother returning to her St. Paul residence. She apparently interrupted a burglary, and one of the suspects is accused of shooting her outside her home. Julie Zietlow felt sick when she heard that the four people who were charged in October in her daughter's death are now accused in a Minneapolis crime spree in the three hours after Wierstad lost her life. "I don't want them ever to be released again," Zietlow said Tuesday. Mike Freeman, who called the case "one of the most violent rampages I have seen in my nearly 18 years as county attorney," said he's looking for the same for the four people. He said his office is working closely with the Ramsey County attorney's office "to make sure that, if convicted, they spend the rest of their lives in prison." The Ramsey County attorney's office quickly filed charges, saying Albert George McIntosh, 31, of Minneapolis was the man who had shot Wierstad. They charged him with murder. Prosecutors charged Alvin Rudolph Bell Jr., 25, of St. Louis Park, with aiding and abetting murder and Isiah Lee Harper, 26, of Minneapolis, with aggravated robbery and burglary. Michelle Lee Koester, 42, of Minneapolis was accused of misleading and obstructing investigators. - (Black-on-white) |

Hamilton Co. prosecutor criticizes ruling to set aside death penalty for (black) killer (of White woman) in 1997 CINCINNATI —Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters is criticizing a decision by the state's high court to overturn the death sentence of a man who beat a Cincinnati woman to death in 1997 during a robbery that netted $50. In a 4-3 ruling Tuesday, the court rejected Rayshawn Johnson's sentence based on his troubled upbringing and his subsequent remorse. Johnson was convicted of killing Shanon Marks with a baseball bat in 1997. He was sentenced to death in 1998, but appealed in 2006. At that time, a federal court agreed with Johnson that he had received ineffective assistance of counsel during the mitigation phase of his trial and instructed the state to commute Johnson’s death sentence or hold a new mitigation hearing. A new jury recommended death again in January 2012. Deters said the decision affects one's faith in the criminal justice system. He said the attack against Marks was horrific. "This poor family, my God,” Deters said during a news conference Tuesday. Deters didn’t hold back while talking about the state’s decision. "It is one of the most heinous crimes we've ever seen,” Deters said. He says the attack against Marks was horrific. Marks was found in her home on Nov. 12, 1997, bludgeoned to death. Johnson entered the home she shared with her husband, and beat her to death with a baseball bat. "She was a wonderful citizen of this community that was taken like that," Deters said. "By a 4-to-3 decision they've decided that the mitigation now, because we're blaming grandma, is not outweighed by the horrible aggravation of what happened to Shannon.” It is a decision that Joe Deters said will re-victimize Mark’s family. - (Black-on-white) |

Man convicted of impregnating 11-year-old girl sentenced to life HOUMA, La. -- A Thibodaux man found guilty of impregnating the 11-year-old child of his ex-girlfriend will spend the rest of his life in prison. State District Court Judge George Larke sentenced 27-year-old Joseph Riney to mandatory life in prison without benefits. Riney was convicted of aggravated rape Nov. 5 following a trial that involved DNA evidence of Riney’s paternity. Riney was about 37 million times more likely to be the boy's father than any other man in the black community. The baby had half of Riney's DNA and the other half belonged to the girl. Aggravated rape refers to the rape of a victim under age 13, among other factors, according to state law. A conviction prohibits the possibility of probation or parole. Riney was arrested Jan. 22, 2014, following accusations that he forced the now 13-year-old child to have sex with him multiple times at her home in Houma until she turned 11. The repeated abuse resulted in the child’s pregnancy. |

Aunt struck after saving niece from speeding car’s path - black man charged with hit-and-run A young woman saved her 5-year-old niece’s life by pushing the child out of the path of a car in Queens on Sunday — but was struck by the vehicle herself and critically injured, witnesses and cops said. Just seconds after Urabia Nelson and little London stepped off the Far Rockaway curb hand-in-hand, the 21-year-old woman noticed the oncoming white Ford Mustang with black racing stripes tearing through the intersection as it tried to beat a red light, witnesses said. Nelson pushed the youngster out of harm’s way but ended up being plowed by the sports car in front of the child. The Mustang’s driver, Denzel Watson, 23, allegedly sped off after running Nelson down, leaving the injured woman for dead as London sobbed over her. |
