(Black) Fresno man sentenced to death for rape, murder of (White) teen girl in 1985 Eddie Ricky Nealy, whom a prosecutor called one of the most dangerous men in Fresno County’s history, was sentenced Friday to California’s death row for the 1985 rape and killing of Fresno teen Jody Lynn Wolf. Judge Arlan Harrell’s voice cracked and he nearly cried in Fresno County Superior Court when he announced Nealy’s death sentence. Nealy, 58, received the death penalty after a jury in September 2013 convicted him of rape and the first-degree murder of 14-year-old Jody, whose nude body was discovered floating face up in a southwest Fresno canal on Aug. 15, 1985. The runaway was wearing only knee-high socks. An autopsy revealed she died of blunt-force trauma to the back of her head and had been dead at least two days. In its decision, the jury said Nealy should be executed for killing Jody. “It was a cold, vicious murder in the commission of a rape,” Harrell said in announcing Nealy’s punishment. The judge said there was evidence presented at Nealy’s trial that showed he had killed Mary Charlotte Barnett in July 1988, but Nealy never was tried for it. Barnett’s nude body was found in a southwest Fresno field. She was hogtied and had a purse strap and brassiere tightly wrapped around her neck. The coroner said Barnett died as a result of ligature strangulation and had cuts, bruises and fractures on her face, as well as on other parts of her body. Nealy’s other convictions included three rapes, one robbery and child abuse. - (Black-on-white) |

State’s High Court To Hear More Death Penalty Arguments HARTFORD, Conn. _ The Connecticut Supreme Court is giving the state one more chance to argue in favor of keeping capital punishment for those already sentenced to die. A divided high court in August ruled the death penalty violated the state constitution and contemporary standards of decency. The state had already passed a law abolishing capital punishment, except for those currently on death row. The court ruled in the case of Eduardo Santiago that because capital punishment is unconstitutional, the ban should apply to everyone. But on Tuesday, the court scheduled oral arguments for Jan. 7 on the constitutional aspects of the death penalty in the case of Russell Peeler. He was sentenced to die for ordering the 1999 killings of an 8-year-old boy and his mother in Bridgeport. |

(Black) Former Bridgeport cop charged with faking racist letter left in PD mailboxes BRIDGEPORT -- After a racially charged letter was sent to the Bridgeport Police Department on February 9, State Police investigators said they found it was all a hoax. Back in February, Higgins said he found a letter that stated, in part, that black police officers belong in the toilet. The letter showed up in several officers’ mailboxes. At the time, it appeared to be an "inside job" because the letter was written on official police department letterhead, which is not available to the general public. The letter, titled "White Power," also referenced a highly publicized case involving three Bridgeport police officers, including Higgins. The officers were caught on camera kicking and stomping a man in Beardsley Park in May of 2011. Higgins, a 12-year veteran of the department, was the only black officer involved, and was the only officer acquitted of brutality charges. Trial begins for black man accused of murdering a White couple in their seventies GREENVILLE COUNTY, S.C. —Jonathan Donell Rhodes' double murder trial started Tuesday morning. Rhodes is charged with murder, kidnapping and burglary in the October 2012 deaths of Helen and Gary Wells. The Wellses were found dead inside their Terramont Drive home on Oct. 3, 2012. During opening statements, 13th Circuit Solicitor Walt Wilkins told the jury that Rhodes had help carrying out the crime from the Wellses' housekeeper, Shirley Rogers. The first witness to testify was the son-in-law of the Wellses' next-door neighbor, who was tending to his father-in-law's yard. The neighbor testified that Rogers asked him for help after seeing Gary Wells lying on the floor. The neighbor entered the home through the unlocked front door and called 911 after finding Gary Wells lying in a pool of blood in an office-type room and Helen Wells in a bedroom. A former Department of Public Safety forensics investigator said Gary Wells had deep gashes on his legs and cuts to his abdomen, hands and head. (Black) Condemned for 1993 Slaying (of newlywed White man and rape of White wife) Loses Federal Appeal A federal appeals court has refused an appeal from a 40-year-old man on death row for fatally shooting a Dallas man who was walking with his newlywed wife on a jogging trail at a community college just outside Dallas. The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Monday denied Alvin Braziel's arguments that his attorneys were deficient for not presenting sufficient mitigating evidence during the punishment phase of his 2001 murder trial in Dallas. Braziel was condemned for a 1993 failed robbery attempt where 27-year-old Douglas White was shot dead. White's wife of 11 days was raped during the attack on the trail that circled Eastfield College in Mesquite. DNA tests while Braziel was serving a five-year prison term for sexual assault of a child linked him to the slaying. - (Black-on-white) |

(Black) Man charged in connection with (white) ex girlfriend's disappearance - dismemberment MINNEAPOLIS -- A Minneapolis man is behind bars in connection with the disappearance of ex-girlfriend Adelle "Addie" Jensen, who has been missing since Nov. 18. Thirty-one-year-old Joshua Dow was charged Monday with second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon, and interference with a dead body while concealing evidence. According to charges, Dow, who has a 2-year-old daughter with Jensen, went with her parents to the police station when they filed a missing persons report on Nov. 21. After Jensen's parents left, Dow returned to the station and told police that he and Jensen had recently argued because he was seeing someone else. He also told them Jensen "had left like this twice in the past - once in January and once a few week ago," according to the complaint. On Nov. 22, Dow's brother told police that Jensen was dead and that he had assisted Dow in moving her body, according to charges. He told police that Dow put a gun to his head and said he would kill him if he didn't help. He said they took her body to a warehouse in Minneapolis. Dow's brother took police to the warehouse, but was surprised to see the closet where they had put Jensen's body was empty. However, officers "smelled what their experience led them to believe was decomposing flesh," according to court documents. A witness told authorities he had seen Dow at the warehouse on Nov. 22, washing off tarps and putting boxes on a cart. When Dow was arrested, he told officers that Jensen had killed herself in front of him and he panicked. According to court documents, Dow told another witness that he had dismembered Jensen after she died and disposed of her body. He also admitted to police that he had disposed of her body, but did not disclose a location. - (Black-on-white) |
