(Black) Man gets life sentence for 2013 slaying (of White woman) in Raleigh apartment RALEIGH - Melissa Huggins-Jones had come to Raleigh two years ago to start a new life. The mother of two was newly divorced in 2013 and had been given an opportunity by the bank she worked for in Tennessee to manage its first out-of-state branch. In early May 2013, Huggins-Jones moved into an apartment complex off Six Forks Road near North Hills. She selected it, friends and family have said, because she thought it was safe. Her daughter Olivia, 8 at the time, moved with her, and her son, then 12, stayed behind in Tennessee with his father to finish the school year there. That new life of Huggins-Jones had barely begun when police say two men and a woman on a robbery spree robbed the 30-year-old mother of her future. Ronald Lee Anthony Jr., 25, and an accomplice took turns stabbing and bludgeoning Huggins-Jones, prosecutors said. Anthony, 25, was charged with murder on May 22, 2013, along with Travion Devonte Smith, 22, of Raleigh, and Sarah Rene Redden, 20, of Wake Forest. - (Black-on-white) |

(Black) Michael Hendon sentenced to three life terms in Barberton slayings (of White family) An Akron man was given three consecutive life sentences Tuesday for complicity to commit aggravated murder in the 2013 New Year’s Eve shooting deaths of two Barberton teens and their father. Michael Deon Hendon, 23, who was convicted of the crime in a Summit County jury trial last month, is not eligible for parole under the sentencing order of Common Pleas Judge Amy Corrigall Jones. The scene became tense minutes later when the father of one of the young victims stood and shouted at Hendon from the gallery’s front row: “You killed my daughter” — followed by profanity as he began crying uncontrollably. A sheriff’s deputy quickly calmed the situation and instructed those in the gallery, more than two dozen, to remain in their seats until other deputies escorted Hendon out of the courthouse. Deputies later talked to the grieving man, Dan Stephens of Barberton, who is the biological father of 18-year-old victim Ashley Carpenter, but did not place him under arrest. Ashley’s father figure, John Kohler, 42, and her brother, David Carpenter-Kohler, 14, were shot in the head during a home-invasion robbery planned by Michael Hendon, trial testimony showed. His older brother, Eric Donta Hendon, 32, was identified by both sides as the shooter. Both men were armed with handguns and went after a stash of marijuana and money that Kohler, a small-time seller, had kept hidden in a closet safe. His longtime girlfriend, Ronda Blankenship, now 39, was stabbed in the cheek and shot in the head during the six-minute rampage, losing her left eye, but survived. - (Black-on-white) |

Three Good Samaritans helped Polk County Deputy Mike Walsh fight off a (black) suspect who attacked him WINTER HAVEN, Fl - The Polk County Sheriff's Office is publicly thanking the three Good Samaritans who came to the aid of Deputy Sheriff Mike Walsh on Sunday when they witnessed a suspect, Corey Johnson, beating up Deputy Walsh and then fleeing on foot. George Cooper, Antonio Velazquez, and Christopher Carver were the three Good Samaritans. "There are people in this world who have no respect for the law, or for the peacekeepers and those who are sworn to uphold the law," said Sheriff Grady Judd. "Yes, some of those people live right here in Polk County. But we also are blessed that there are people in this county who support law enforcement and first responders. When they see something, they say something - or they do something. These three men, who do not know each other or Deputy Walsh, probably had better things to do on a Sunday morning than jump out of their cars to help catch a violent fleeing suspect. We can never thank them enough for their selfless actions. George Cooper, Antonio Velazquez, and Christopher Carver - you are our heroes." ‘They don’t say anything’: Cops turn blind eye at (black) West Indian Day Parade - (Hands off black criminals) NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton on Monday said he saw no need to ban parties ahead of the West Indian-American Day Parade — even though four people were shot and two others were stabbed during this year’s festivities. In addition to the pre-parade violence, revelers openly smoked weed and drank booze as the annual procession made its way in Brooklyn on Monday afternoon. Cops routinely confiscate booze from revelers at the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, but detectives union chief Michael Palladino said he was ordered not to do the same thing at the West Indian-American Day Parade. NYPD sources said supervisors have traditionally urged restraint when dealing with paradegoers, with one cop saying the brass “forbid us from making arrests, no matter what we saw, because they didn’t want riots.” |

(Sadistic and depraved black) Westchester Teen Sentenced For Sex Attacks On Woman, Young Girl WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. — It was a wild scene Tuesday in a Westchester County courthouse as a judge sentenced a 16-year-old rapist. The judge said Javon Roberts exhibited sadistic depravity like no one she had seen in her court before. Roberts was sentenced to 3 1/3 to 10 years in prison — the maximum punishment allowed because he was just 15 years old when he attacked a woman and child in separate incidents in Mount Vernon. As the court session ended, the older victim threw a wedge shoe at Roberts’ mother out of frustration. The woman was struck in the head and later wheeled out to an ambulance. She was not seriously hurt. The victim was not taken into custody, but was given a ticket. Both attacks by Roberts, who pleaded guilty to to rape and criminal sexual act, were hours long ordeals of brutality. Authorities said a 23-year-old woman was abducted at knifepoint on Oct. 20, 2014, while walking home from work. They said Roberts took her to the Grimes Elementary School playground and forced her to perform sex acts. Then, on Dec. 4, authorities said Roberts grabbed an 11-year-old girl as she walked home from a Christmas concert at a Mount Vernon library. Roberts took her to the same school and raped her at knifepoint, authorities said. He threatened that he would kill her if she didn’t stop screaming. Roberts told arresting officers he couldn’t help himself. In court Tuesday, the older victim told her attacker: “You are a murderer as well as a rapist. Part of me died in that playground. I take my soul back from you. Today, you are the powerless one. |

12-Year Old (Black) Girl (Allegedly) Defends Self Against Hate Crime, Family Questions Suspension A 12-year-old Modesto, Calif. boy has been cited for a hate crime and battery after attacking one of his Black classmates while they waited for the school bus. NuPhaeya Hassen, 12, a student at La Loma Junior High School, said she was waiting for the school bus on August 24 when the boy came up to her brandishing sticks, holding them in the shape of a cross, while saying he was a member of the Klu Klux Klan. He proceeded to swing the sticks, scratching her arm before Hassen smacked him in defense. When the boy crossed the street, he began throwing rocks at her until the bus arrived. After school the boy’s sister confronted Hassen about slapping her brother. Hassen said, “she grabbed my hair, pulled me to ground and then started hitting me in the head repeatedly”. While both the boy and sister were suspended, Hassen’s grandmother, Rita Trillery, said La Loma administrators imposed a one day of in-school suspension on her granddaughter. In a meeting with school officials, administrators referred to the suspension as a “cool down period” rather than discipline. The incident has garnered the attention of the local NAACP chapter, which has questioned the Modesto City Schools district’s handling of the matter |

Death penalty, life in prison in Eden Park shootout One man was sentenced to death and another was sentenced to life in prison Friday morning for their part in the murder of Herman Curry and the manslaughter of 16-year-old Alexander Kamara Jr. during a 2012 shootout at a soccer tournament in Wilmington’s Eden Park. Otis Phillips was sentenced to be executed Nov. 17. That execution date will most likely be stayed as appeals are filed. In addition to receiving the death penalty, Superior Court Judge Calvin L. Scott Jr. scentenced Otis Phillips to an additional 141 years in prison for additional charges related to the shootout and life in prison for the 2008 killing of Christopher Palmer. Otis’ co-defendant, Jeffery Phillips, was sentenced to life plus 76 years in prison. He said nothing during the hearing. Prosecutors charged that Otis Phillips and Jeffrey Phillips, who are not related, were members of the Sure Shots street gang and went to a Jamaican soccer tournament in Eden Park on July 8, 2012 seeking revenge against members of the Jamaican community because a Jamaican man shot and killed a friend of theirs at a party hours earlier. |
