A Center Point man with a violent past is now charged with attempted murder in the pistol-whipping of a Birmingham police detective during a traffic stop Friday morning. Police today identified the suspect as 34-year-old Janard Shamar Cunningham, also known as Janaris Shavar Cunningham. He has at least a half dozen convictions dating back to 1999, and as many arrests in which charges were dismissed during the same time period. Cunningham is charged in the beating of a detective who is a six-year veteran of the force. Authorities said Cunningham stole the detective's gun and then repeatedly hit him in the head until the detective stopped moving.Not long after the attack, photos began to surface on social media showing the detective lying face down on the pavement. Another photo showed him bloody and kneeling, but awake. In some cases on Facebook, the photos were accompanied by words of support for whoever beat the detective. That, police say, is outrageous. Officers are angry that any photos were shown at all, but even more so that there were some who mocked the incident. "He was laying there lifeless and people were standing around taking pictures,'' said Birmingham police Sgt. Heath Boackle, president of the Fraternal Order of Police. "If the tables were turned, and that was a suspect lying there, they would be rioting." "If the officer would have shot him, then he would have shot an 'unarmed man.' Instead, he took the gun from the officer,'' Boackle said of Friday's incident. "The officer had every right to shoot him. Police responded to a home in the 1600 block of Tysor Drive just before 7:30 a.m. Saturday after getting a report of a disturbance at the home. A preliminary investigation revealed that a woman had been sexually assaulted by a man known to her and that the suspect had fled the area, police said. A 20-year-old transgender woman was shot and killed in Detroit this weekend, according to LGBT advocacy group Equality Michigan. The group has identified the woman and Wayne State University student as 20-year old Amber Monroe. Detroit police officials said they do not give out the names of victims until an investigation has been completed and they could not comment on the matter without more detail about where and when the alleged crime happened. The Killona man was arrested on Feb. 20 and indicted by the St. Charles Parish Grand Jury on the cruelty charge. Poche plead guilty to the charge Thursday (Aug. 60 and was sentenced by Judge M. Lauren Lemmon to five years with the Louisiana Department of Corrections, consecutive to one year of parole revocation. The 52-year-old former wide receiver, who made his name at the University of Nebraska and with several professional teams, applied for multiple mortgage loans in quick succession while using the same property as collateral, a jury found. Fryar’s defense was that he was a victim of a “con artist” who told him to carry out the scheme. That man, William Barksdale, pleaded guilty to a conspiracy charge last year and was the government’s key witness. He is serving a 20-month prison sentence. A police officer in Arlington, Tex., shot and killed a 19-year-old Angelo State University student Friday after responding to a report of a burglary in progress at a car dealership. Christian J. Taylor, 19, was shot after an “altercation” with an Arlington officer. Taylor was unarmed at the time, police said. Taylor, who would have started his sophomore year at the school this fall, played as a free safety on the university’s football team. As news of his death spread, friends and teammates responded with an outpouring of grief on social media. Memphis police are investigating a kidnapping and criminal assault that happened on Saturday, August 1 at approximately 11:30 p.m. The incident happened in the 700 block of W. Mitchell Rd. Police say when they arrived on the scene they found a 24-year-old female who reported she was walking in the area of Carbon and Argo when a male subject occupying an older model Chevrolet Tahoe offered her a ride. When she refused, the subject pointed a handgun at her and ordered her to get in the vehicle. CHARLESTON, SC - Charleston Police arrested a second suspect in a strong armed robbery that happened Monday near America and Lee Streets in downtown Charleston. Michael Eugene Nickens, 22, of Dingle Street, has been charged with strong armed robbery. Nickens, who is on parole for grand larceny, is being held in the Charleston County Detention Center. According to police, the victim went to the corner of America Street and Lee Street to use the pay phone when he was grabbed from behind and held by one of the suspects. Then, at least three or four other suspects assaulted and robbed him. The victim was treated at the scene by EMS. Jamar Aikeem Brown, 19, of Jackson Street, was arrested about 40 minutes after the incident at Jackson Street and America Street. Brown, who also is charged with strong armed robbery, is also being held in the Charleston County Detention Center.

CINCINNATI —Police are investigating a six-vehicle crash on SB Interstate 71 at Deerfield Road in Sycamore Township. Dispatch said multiple 911 calls were received and a staffer reported seeing a naked man running on the highway. "A black man is running bare butt naked," said one caller. Witnesses said a naked man was driving a truck down the left shoulder, hitting cars as he went. Investigators said witnesses told them he was traveling 80 miles an hour. Investigators have identified the suspect as Tracy Martin, 44, of Chagrin Falls, Ohio. He's accused of driving his pickup truck on the left shoulder of southbound I-71 at a high rate of speed, side-swiping four vehicles, and rear-ending a fifth vehicle. Investigators say he eventually struck the concrete median wall, overturned, and then struck a sixth vehicle.
