(Black man) Reynolds guilty of (White) man’s murder at group home
  Rejecting the claim that Lecorius Reynolds did not know his actions’ wrongfulness, a Lucas County judge found the Toledo man guilty of murder in the 2014 death of a fellow resident of a South Toledo group home. Reynolds, 35, of the 100 block of Dale Street, faces life in prison with parole eligibility after 15 years when he is sentenced Jan. 20 by Common Pleas Judge Myron Duhart. Earlier this month, Judge Duhart presided over a bench trial in which Reynolds was charged with alternate counts of murder for stabbing and beating to death Roy Roberts, 51. While Reynolds had pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity and, as an alternative, contended he was acting in self-defense when he assaulted Mr. Roberts, Judge Duhart rejected both claims. The insanity plea required a finding that Reynolds suffered from a mental disease or defect so severe he did not know that what he was doing was wrong. The self-defense claim required him to show he was in danger of great bodily harm or death when he assaulted Mr. Roberts. “Mr. Reynolds, you cannot escape responsibility for what you know is wrong,” the judge said. About 9 p.m. May 2, 2014, police responded to a report of a nude body struck by a train on Norfolk Southern tracks at Airline Avenue and Gibbons Street, thinking it could have been a suicide. But officers immediately noticed very little blood at the scene, prompting them to surmise that the victim had been killed somewhere else. As it turned out, blood and DNA evidence revealed Reynolds had attacked Mr. Roberts at the Dale Street group home where they both lived, placed his body in a Toledo recycling bin and wheeled it to the tracks a couple blocks away, and dumped it. In a video-recorded police interrogation shown during the trial, Reynolds at first denied any involvement with Mr. Roberts' death, but then said he had beaten Mr. Roberts after the victim made sexual advances toward him. Judge Duhart said he carefully weighed the testimony of two mental health experts who testified at Reynolds’ trial: one said Reynolds lacked a rational motive, and the other who said he had engaged in “goal-oriented behavior.” “That means Mr. Reynolds was acting in such a way at the time of the assault that he was avoiding or attempting to avoid detection of a crime,” the judge said. “This court is going to note a number of things … washing a knife, moving a body, operating in such a way as to conceal blood on a bed, bloody clothes.” Last year, Reynolds was found incompetent to stand trial, but he was later deemed restored to competency after a lengthy hospitalization at Twin Valley Behavioral Healthcare in Columbus. - (Black-on-white) |
SAVANNAH, GA - Three people have been arrested and indicted for the January 2013 murder of a Savannah State University student. Rebecca Foley was found shot to death in front of her apartment on Savannah’s Southside on January 21, 2013 outside Colonial Village at Marsh Cove Apartments. 23-year-old Kevin Lenard Smith, 22-year-old Roderick Demione Parrish and 23-year-old Jordan Lamar Campbell were arrested and indicted. A Chatham County Grand Jury indicted Smith, Parrish and Campbell on a single count of malice murder, three counts of felony murder, two counts of aggravated assault and two counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. Smith and Parrish also are charged with one count of possession of a firearm by a first offender probationer. Smith, Parrish and Campbell were incarcerated on unrelated charges when warrants were served by Savannah-Chatham Metro Police Department detectives. The 21-year-old student was sitting inside her car when the shooting happened. She was found on the ground by police. - (Black-on-white)

TAMPA - A Hillsborough County Circuit Court Judge decided to allow testimony related to the sexual history of the defendant and witnesses in the case. Defense attorneys for Michael Fields, who is accused of killing his girlfriend, were in court arguing to allow the evidence related to the sexual history of the couple with whom Fields lived. Hillsborough Circuit Judge Thomas Barber said the evidence being presented for use by the defense was "salacious" and "embarrassing." HARRISBURG, Pa. — The state Superior Court has upheld three life sentences a central Pennsylvania judge gave an inmate who raped a clerk at the state prison in Rockview. Thirty-eight-year-old Omar Best, of Philadelphia, pretended for days to be on a work detail so he could target the victim when shewas alone. The state Department of Corrections last year paid $3.3 million to settle a federal lawsuit filed by the clerk, who alleged various security breakdowns led to the July 2013 attack. Prosecutors say Best choked the woman to the point of unconsciousness before raping her in an office near inmate cells. She blew an emergency whistle, but it was nearly a half-hour before she was rescued. Best, who had a 2012 rape conviction, is now at the state prison in Huntingdon.
ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. — The St. Johns County Sheriff's Office has identified a man caught on camera stealing a donated Christmas tree from S.A.F.E. Pet Rescue shelter and store. The video shows a dark pickup truck pulling into the driveway of S.A.F.E. Pet Rescue on Old A1A. A man can be seen walking on to the porch, grabbing a large box and taking off with a sheet covering the stolen box and license plate. Investigators are seeking the public's help in locating George Glenn Cockhren, 51, according to a release from SJSO Media Relations Officer Kevin Kelshaw. 
HANOVER, Md. —Three men have been arrested and charged with stealing delivered packages from a number of homes in western Anne Arundel County, police said. Police said the suspects were arrested Monday near Arundel Mills Mall in Hanover. The arrests came after reports of numerous thefts in the area, some of which had witnesses observing a white car at the scene of the crimes. Police said after receiving a tip, numerous officers working in the Arundel Mills Mall area began to canvass the area. They located a suspect vehicle near Dorchester Boulevard and Arundel Mills Boulevard in Hanover. After searching the vehicle, police said they determined it was involved in the theft of numerous packages in the area. Kevin (aka Kevan) Harris, 22, of no fixed address, Phillip Bosworth, 21, of Baltimore, and Brandon Wheeler, 29, of Severn, were each charged with multiple counts of theft related to the scheme.
CARROLL COUNTY — A 30-year-old man living in Green Forest, who authorities say is in the United States illegally, is behind bars after authorities found that he stole the identity of a California man. The Carroll County Sheriff's Office began investigating after a man from Bakersfield, California, contacted them to report someone in Green Forest was using his name to get a credit card. A man living in Green Forest was found to have the same name as the victim, and had prior arrests, according to authorities. The man's prior arrest information and fingerprints were sent to US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to be identified through the Alien Registration database. MILWAUKEE -- A Milwaukee County judge sentenced 33-year-old Derrick Brown on Tuesday, December 22nd to 44-and-a-half years in prison and 22 years of extended supervision. This, in the wake of Brown being convicted of sexual assault charges. The charges against Brown stem from an incident that occurred last December on North Bremen Street in Milwaukee's Riverwest neighborhood. The victim told police she was walking down the street — headed for a food store when a man approached her — grabbing her arm, saying “Hey, hey.” Police say the victim told them the man had a gun, and he pointed it at the left side of her head, saying, “Just be quiet. I have a gun. You need to come with me.” The criminal complaint says the two continued to walk, with the victim telling the man she didn’t have anything — believing he was attempting to rob her. The man said, “Yes, yes you do. You need to come over here and take your pants off,” police said. Realizing the man was planning to rape her, the woman said: “No. Please don’t do this.”
PHILADELPHIA – Police are on the hunt for a suspect who they say robbed a man who was just involved in a car accident in Kensington. Authorities say just before 11 a.m. on December 4, a 25-year-old man was in an accident on the 200 block of West Tioga Street. While sitting inside of his vehicle, police say the victim was approached by an unknown male who began punching him in the face. Authorities say the suspect then took the victim’s iPhone 6 and tablet, and fled the scene. The male was taken to Temple Hospital to be treated for his injuries. Police describe the suspect as a Black male, around 30 years old, with a beard. He was wearing a green jacket and blue jeans.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Police say a Louisville man violently raped a woman before robbing her of her phone, ID and hotel room key. According to an arrest report, it happened on Dec. 17 on Southern Parkway, near Oakdale Avenue. Police say 25-year-old Ronald Lee Bullitt saw a woman -- a complete stranger -- walking in an alley. He put a gun to the back of her head, shoved her to the ground, put his knee in her back and tried to strangle her. He then pulled his pants down and raped her. After that, Bullitt allegedly took the woman's phone, ID and hotel room key. Police say Bullitt ran away after witnesses heard the woman screaming and interrupted the assault. Bullitt was arrested Tuesday afternoon at his apartment. He is charged with first degree rape, first degree robbery, first degree wanton endangerment and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon. He was already a convicted sex offender before this incident. He was convicted of statutory rape in Georgia.
CHICAGO - Milton Anderson, a 26-year-old man accused of sexually assaulting and robbing a woman he followed off a CTA Red Line train in Rogers Park was ordered held without bail. After attacking the victim early Sunday morning, Anderson made lewd comments about what he wanted to do to her sexually and told her he tried to look up her skirt on the train. Anderson followed the woman off the northbound train at the Jarvis stop about 4:40 a.m. He then allegedly came up behind the woman and put his hands over her mouth. The victim struggled and screamed and the two fell to the ground. Anderson took out a silver handgun and threatened to shoot if the woman didn’t stop screaming. He demanded her underwear and purse and took her iPhone. After the woman gave Anderson the password to her cellphone, Anderson unzipped her coat and sexually assaulted her and fondled her breasts under her clothes. The woman, who was taken to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, suffered from soreness to her jaw, body and groin.
DENVER -Police in Denver searched for a man accused of unlawful sexual contact. The man is wanted for unlawful sexual contact at 7:10 p.m. on Dec. 2 at the Montbello Park-n-Ride while the victim was waiting for a bus. The suspet is described as a black male, tall, with dark skin, an earring, faded haircut and a pierced left ear.
A composite sketch has been released by Hamilton Police of a suspect wanted in a sexual assault that took place in October. Police say it happened between 2 and 5am on October 11th at Shamrock Park in the Corktown neighbourhood. The unknown suspect led the victim to a secluded area in the park where the victim was sexually assaulted. Police are hoping the public can help identify the suspect.
Elk Grove police released a sketch Wednesday of a man suspected of attempted sexual assault earlier this month on a city street. Police said that a 64-year-old woman was walking in the area of Alpinespring Way and Meadowspring Drive about 1:30 p.m. Dec. 8 when she was pushed to the ground from behind by a man who tried to pull off her leggings. The woman screamed as he began to pull down his sweatpants, according to a police press release. As a result of her screams, the attacker fled. The woman suffered minor injuries that did not require hospital treatment. The attacker is described as a young, black man, about 5 feet 11 inches tall and 200 pounds. He was wearing a black, hooded sweatshirt; gray sweatpants; and white athletic shoes. 
DENVER — A man who has spent 28 years behind bars for a rape he says he did not commit was released from jail on Tuesday afternoon. 
Just days before he would have been paroled from prison, a man was charged with the 1992 rape of a woman and her young daughter, Denver District Attorney Mitch Morrissey said Monday. LC Jackson, 39, was charged with four counts of sexual assault, sexual assault on a child and second-degree kidnapping, along with a sentence-enhancing count of crime of violence. PHILADELPHIA — The U.S. Attorney’s office has indicted ex-Philadelphia Sheriff John Green on federal charges of fraud and conspiracy. Green pleaded not guilty. According to the indictment, Green accepted bribes in exchange for giving contracts, business and fees to co-conspirator James Davis. Davis owned a title search and settlement company and received money from the Sheriff’s Office’s real estate sales, and homeowners’ properties that went up for auction. In return, Davis provided Green with a stream of personal benefits, including buying him a house and funneling money to his 2007 reelection campaign. Green stepped down in 2011 after serving 22 years as Philadelphia Sheriff. He could face up to 85 years in prison if convicted.
A disbarred attorney was charged with stealing more than $500,000 from clients. Disgraced ex-real-estate attorney Claudine King, 38, spent the cash — taken between 2011 and 2013 — on business and personal expenses, said the Manhattan DA’s Office. Those included pricey meals at Del Frisco’s steakhouse, stays at The Standard hotel and designer clothes, the DA said. King pleaded not guilty.

A Brooklyn man claims he was kicked in the testicles so hard by NYPD cops that he had to have one of them surgically removed. Corey Green, 32, was in a Bedford-Stuyvesant apartment playing cards with friends Saturday when cops busted in looking for a robbery suspect, said his dad, John Green, 52. His son, who had a warrant for drunken driving, had emergency surgery. A police spokesman said Green collided with a scaffold as he eluded cops. 
In O'Fallon, Illinois, surveillance pictures captured a woman and man trying to steal credit cards from shoppers. The woman distracts shoppers while the man goes in and tries to "rifle" through purses. "That is crazy. They are going to do anything they can to get what they want, they can't get a job so this is their job," says shopper Lila Kent. Police say with the money they steal, they buy gift cards. Police say the suspects have done this at Walmart and Aldi.

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - A Port St. Lucie woman was arrested after police said she attacked her husband for passing gas one too many times. Around 3:30 a.m. Dec. 11, an officer responded to a domestic battery call at a home. The officer said a man at the home stated he was lying in bed with his wife when he passed gas. The husband said he wife, identified as Dawn Meikle, 55, then began elbowing him on his arm. The husband said he continued to pass gas and Meikle continued to elbow and kick him again. He told police that he began restraining his wife for his own safety but her "lip was inadvertently split open." During the fight, police said the husband suffered several 6- to 8-inch scratches across his chest. His shirt was also ripped in three different places. Meikle admitted to police that she began to elbow and punch him after she repeatedly told him to stop passing gas in bed.

Watertown Police arrested three people Friday night in the stabbing death of 23 year old Nichalas VanZelf at his home on Winslow Street earlier in the day. Police charged Freddie "De'Von" Southerland, 19, 707 State Street, with first degree murder; Devonte Bumpars, 19, from New York City, with second degree murder and Amanda Camardo, 18, Cape Vincent, with second degree robbery. Police said patrols arrived to find VanZelf suffering from a stab wound to his chest early Friday morning; he died at Samaritan Medical Center shortly after. VanZelf's brother said that Nichalas was stabbed and died from cardiac arrest at the hospital at about 6:15 a.m. Friday. The trio went to VanZelf's apartment to rob him, "and with the intent to kill the victim...Southerland fatally stabbed the victim in the chest." Bachus also said Southerland "admitted to elements of the crime..." His mother said VanZelf was father to a son and expecting a daughter in February. 
DALLAS -- A Dallas woman is accused of threatening to kill one of the 12 jurors who found her son guilty of murder in the 2014 killing of an insurance salesman in Oak Lawn. Felecia Washington, 47, faces one count of obstruction, a degree felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison. Washington was booked into the Dallas County jail Friday.
