Man
accused of hiding in girl’s bedroom, sexually abusing her for a
month A Washington state man sexually abused a 12-year-old while hiding out in her bedroom over the course of a month, federal prosecutors said. Zacharias Adrian Cavasos, 21, initially contacted the girl on social media in December before traveling from Washington to Oregon to meet the child at the Wildhorse Resort and Casino in Pendleton in February. Cavasos then secretly moved into the girl’s room on Feb. 10, hiding from her grandfather by staying in a cavity beneath the girl’s bed after removing slats that held her mattress, Assistant US Attorney Jennifer Martin said. Cavasos also allegedly hid in the girl’s closet at times until Feb. 25 — when her grandfather caught him in the home, which is on the Umatilla Indian Reservation, prosecutors said. After getting kicked out, Cavasos managed to sneak back into the residence before he was found again in her room on March 11 and was arrested, Martin said. VINE,

in Animal Cruelty Case Animal Cruelty Charges Bond has been set for two Hoffman Estates residents who have been accused of starving two dogs to death. Andre Norris, 27, and Sarah Gorski, 19, have been charged with four counts of Aggravated Cruelty to Animals, one count of Forgery, and two counts of Misdemeanor Unlawful Disposal of an Animal. Norris’ bond was set at $100,000 and Gorski’s at $50,000. Police Investigation Naperville police officers and animal control personnel were called to a trail area on March 2, where they found a dead German Shepherd weighing about 20 pounds – that breed is usually healthy around 70 pounds according to an NPD press release. The dog was identified as Meliodas and was found to belong to Norris and Gorski. Further investigation concluded the two defendants owned two other dogs, another German Shepherd named Scooby and a Corgi named Bubba. Officials obtained a warrant and searched the defendants home, finding Scooby alive in a dog crate, weighing about 20 pounds. The dog couldn’t walk and was covered in sores and feces. Bubba was found dead in a field weighing about four pounds. “Disturbing” “To say the charges against Sarah Gorski and Andre Norris are disturbing would be a gross understatement,” said DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin. “Otis and Bubba both died a horrible, painful death, allegedly because these two defendants starved them to death. What’s even more disturbing is the allegation that the defendants fed Otis rat poison. “Thankfully, the manner in which Gorski and Norris allegedly treated their pets was discovered and Scooby appears to be on the mend.” Forgery Charge Norris and Gorski’s forgery charge stems from the allegation that the two forged paystubs from Norris’ former employer, Petland. Both defendants turned themselves in to authorities yesterday. |

woman accused of fatally shooting pregnant white girlfriend of
BLACK Chicago footballer 'admitted crime to friend' Mother of 3 convicted of killing ex-Chicago Bears player's pregnant girlfriend pushes for new trial Marni Yang was convicted of killing Rhoni Reuter in 2011. It was clear to authorities that someone wanted his pregnant girlfriend dead. During her trial, prosecutors argued that Yang’s motive was fueled by jealousy. “(The promiscuous black footballer), kindly enough, gives us a list of a list of almost 18, or 16 different women that he either went on a date with or got a phone number from or was romantically involved with… these are 18 women over a three-year pelriod,” Frost said. “You have several women that could have been jealous of Rhoni,” Wilk added. (The black footballer himself was a suspect.) Marni Yang, Shaun Gayle – the tragic love triangle that ended with Rhoni losing her life - 2019 Prosecutors said Yang killed Reuter to eliminate her as a romantic rival. Reuter was shot several times, including having two shots aimed at her belly – and the unborn baby girl. Gayle met Reuter at a charity basketball game in Iowa in 1990 and had dated her on and off until her death, but not exclusively. He had over a dozen sexual partners, but was also buying baby name books and looking forward to the birth of his (illegitimate mixed-race) child with Reuter, his longtime girlfriend. During Yang’s trial, Shaun Gayle publicly admitted having a sexual relationship with Marni Yang, the woman charged with killing his pregnant girlfriend in 2007. Gayle said he had sex with Yang the night before Reuter was killed and that Yang left his Chicago home about 9:30 p.m. that night. Gayle said he’d had sex with Yang about two or three times over the course of a year. |

police and FBI foil suspected MUSLIM radical Islamic terror plot
to attack Barcelona MADRID - The FBI and the Spanish police arrested a “lone wolf” radical Islamist suspect on Friday who was believed to be planning to carry out terrorist attacks in Barcelona. The Moroccan man, who was not named, was detained in the Mediterranean city in a dawn raid by armed police after a surveillance operation.“Since the coronavirus began spreading across Europe, there have been a number of single-person terrorist attacks involving knives or vehicles,” the Civil Guard said in a statement. “The arrested man had used social media to proclaim his loyalty to ISIS and his hatred for the west. Surveillance officers noticed that he had begun to disregard the lockdown rules set out in the state of emergency on a regular basis, that he was taking important security measures as he ventured around Barcelona, suggesting he was carrying out a possible search for targets.” Two weeks ago, Spanish police arrested the British rapper turned Islamic State extremist, Abdel-Majed Abdel Bary, one of the most wanted militants in Europe. |

AJC EXCLUSIVE: Father
of Brunswick shooter previously investigated (alleged)
victim - suspected burglar had criminal record Greg McMichael, who provided gun cover for his son as he fought and eventually shot a "young black jogger", may have known the victim long before their encounter in a subdivision just south of Brunswick, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has learned. In his letter of recusal to Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr, Waycross Judicial Circuit District Attorney George Barnhill wrote that his son, a prosecutor in the Brunswick DA’s office, and McMichael, then an investigator in that same office, “both helped with the previous prosecution of (Ahmaud) Arbery.” McMichael, a former Glynn County cop, told Glynn police he recognized Arbery, 25, from surveillance video that captured a recent burglary in his mostly white neighborhood. He said he planned to make a citizen’s arrest. When he was in high school, Arbery was sentenced to five years probation as a first offender on charges of carrying a weapon on campus and several counts of obstructing a law enforcement officer. He was convicted of probation violation in 2018 after he was charged with shoplifting, court documents show. McMichael, who retired from the DA’s office in April 2019, made no mention of his work on that investigation to police, though it’s unknown whether he remembered it at the time. Barnhill wrote that he learned about his son and McMichael’s ties to Arbery “three or four weeks” earlier. A LOCAL BLACKTIVIST RABBLE ROUSER AGITATOR WANTED TO START A 'RACE RIOT' OVER THIS He didn’t say why he waited so long to recuse himself but claimed “a local 'rabble rouser' has taken up this cause and begun publishing wild and factually incorrect and legally wrong accusations on Facebook and other social media formats calling for marches and physical affronts be made against the McMichaels at their homes, and my son's home in Brunswick etc.” In a letter to Glynn County police, Barnhill wrote that criminal charges were unwarranted against Greg McMichael, his son Travis McMichael, who appeared to fire all three shots, and a third man, William Bryan, who helped them corner Arbery on Feb. 23 inside their neighborhood just south of Brunswick. The prosecutor said Arbery, who was unarmed, initiated contact with Travis McMichael. “This family are not strangers to the local criminal justice system,” Barnhill wrote in his letter to Carr. “From best we can tell, Ahmauds older brother has gone to prison in the past and is currently in the Glynn jail, without bond, awaiting new felony prosecution. It also appears a cousin has been prosecuted by DA Johnson's office.” --AJC Reporter Greg Bluestein contributed to this article. - Bluestein

black man entered Diesel Barbershop proclaiming "God sent me

Campbell was charged with murder." At around 12:15 p.m. on Wednesday, officers were called to the Diesel Barbershop in the Bandera Oaks shopping plaza for a cutting in progress. When police arrived, they found 20-year-old Evan Sorrell Ford O'Regan, an employee of the barbershop, laying near the back door of the business suffering from multiple stab wounds. Oregan died at the scene. While police were on scene, they were directed to another injured person inside a Pei Wei restaurant nearby. The woman, 30-year-old Gabrielle Harrell, was found with multiple stab wounds and was transported to University Hospital. Harrell was also an employee at Diesel Barbershop. Witnesses told police that Oregan and Harrell were inside the barbershop taking customer appointments and preparing for the shop to open when Oregan had gone outside to talk with a man. The man, later identified as Campbell, entered the barbershop with Oregan and witnesses thought he was trying to make an appointment as the two went to the work computer and the victim began to type information in. But then, armed with a knife and a gun, Campbell took all of the employees to the back of the business, the affidavit said. Once there, Campbell put Oregan into a chokehold until he passed out, which allowed one witness to escape, the affidavit continued. Investigators said video surveillance footage then showed Campbell stabbing Harrell and Oregan multiple times before fleeing from the business. When investigators were collecting evidence, they found the babershop's computer on with a prompted window that said "Damion Campbell must have a card on file in order to book this appointment," the affidavit said. Detectives were able to obtain a copy of Campbell's driver's license. Police searched for Campbell for hours before he was eventually captured around 4:30 p.m. - (Black-on-White) |

DNA
match leads to arrest (of black man) in 2016 cold case murder
(of a homeless White woman) PHOENIX, Arizona (3TV/CBS 5) - After 3 and a half years of investigating, the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office said deputies have arrested a man for the murder of a woman found shot to death thanks to a DNA match. Tony Tyrone Reed, 60, was taken into custody on Friday. It all started on Nov. 9, 2016, when deputies found the body of 39-year-old Sabrina Rollins in the area of 107th and Southern avenues. Deputies said she was shot and killed less than two days after she was released from the Lower Buckeye Jail. Investigators did a sexual assault kit and developed a DNA profile but no suspect was identified at the time. Fast forward to April 2019, when MCSO asked the Arizona Department of Public Safety for help. DPS' crime lab did a DNA search in its database of those arrested and those convicted of crimes for a possible relative of the DNA found in the sexual assault kit. In November of 2019, the results came back and they led investigators to Reed. When deputies first talked to Reed, they said he denied being involved in Rollins' murder. Days later, investigators got a warrant for Reed's DNA to compare it to the DNA recovered from the victim. Based on that comparison, Reed was identified as the suspect and was arrested. Investigators didn't say what led up to the murder or release a possible motive. - (Black-on-White) |
Girl,

stabbing attack, deputies say A Palm Desert father is accused of throwing his 1-year-old daughter "over a steep cliff into a ravine" off Highway 74 after a rollover crash on Wednesday, deputies tell News Channel 3. The child was found dead on the scene. Family members of the victims have identified their loved ones' alleged attacker as Adam Slater, seen here on the California Megan's Law online database. Deputies have identified Adam Slater, 49, of Palm Desert, as a suspect involved in both a domestic violence in Indian Wells and the death of the baby. The investigation started at 8:30 Thursday morning, when deputies from the Palm Desert Sheriff's station responded to a reported stabbing on Washington Street in Indian Wells. According to a release, investigators "found a female victim with multiple injuries caused in a domestic violence incident. The female victim was transported to a local hospital and is in stable condition." "He was being combative," the victim's uncle Chris Grome told News Channel 3's Jake Ingrassia. "He attacked her and tried to stab her several times in the stomach and the throat. She fought him off and tried to protect herself." Grome says the victim and suspect are married, and his niece is 6 months pregnant with her second child. Deputies investigating at the church parking lot on Washington Street identified Slater as the suspect in the attack. Just about a half hour later, Slater's vehicle overturned near Vista Point on Highway 74, investigators say. "Witnesses went to the aid of the occupants of the overturned vehicle several hundred feet from the roadway," the Riverside County Sheriff's Department said in a statement. "The driver then ran to the passenger side of the vehicle, where he stabbed a male who had assisted getting a young girl from the vehicle. The suspect then took the girl from the arms of the male he stabbed. Multiple witnesses saw the suspect take the child and throw her over a steep cliff into a ravine. The suspect then fled on foot into the canyon." Slater was detained after a short foot chase. The child was located, but found dead. Family members have identified the child to News Channel 3 as "a little joy" named Maddie. (Madalyn Payton Slater) Ashley Grome is now fundraising online to raise money for a funeral for her daughter. You can see the fundraiser here |

Cowardly
lowlife fatherless black predators snuck up on an 84-year-old
White woman, knocked her down, breaking bones for purse ATLANTA, GA - Police say an 84-year-old woman was robbed in the middle of the day by men wearing surgical masks. The men are still on the run and the woman is in the hospital with broken bones. "I want them caught. You don't do this, much less to an old lady. Take me, take on my husband, but not an old lady," said Jennifer Heffron. Jennifer Heffron says her 84-year-old mom, Dorothy Lamson, is in incredible shape. Ms. Lamson had just picked up a prescription at a CVS on Peachtree Road and wanted to walk home Monday afternoon. It was only a couple of blocks to Heffron's home in the Brookwood Hills Community. Police say as Ms. Lamson was walking on the sidewalk, someone came up from behind her, knocked her to the ground, grabbed her purse, and took off. "I can't believe anyone would be so brazen to do that in the middle of the day in a neighborhood where people are always out walking, running, taking babies for a stroll," said Heffron. Ms. Lamson was rushed to the hospital. She has a hairline fracture in her forearm and had so many broken bones in her shoulder she had to have a shoulder replacement. "She broke her shoulder, the doctor said she had 4 pieces of bone moving around, so she now has a bionic shoulder," said Heffron. Police reviewed security video and found images of 2 men wearing surgical masks in a dark 2018 or 2019 Honda Accord with a drive out tag. One of the men was caught on camera with what appears to be the woman's purse in his hand. "I still can't get over the fact that my mother was mugged seven houses form my own," said Heffron. A despicable crime made even worse by the fact that the crooks were wearing masks during a pandemic. "I think it's even worse that they're wearing masks, that's going to make it harder, but I want them caught," said Heffron. - (Black-on-White) |

Man fatally shot by police after chase streamed the encounter on
Facebook An Indianapolis man was fatally shot by a police officer following a high-speed chase Wednesday night in an encounter that the man streamed on Facebook Live. Family members of the man, who was identified by the Marion County Coroner's Office as Dreasjon Reed, told NBC affiliate WTHR in Indianapolis that they question whether the killing was necessary. "I shouldn't have to bury my little brother," his sister, Jazmine Reed, said through tears. The killing sparked a protest by more than a hundred people at the shooting scene, with many chanting, "No justice, no peace." It was one of only three deadly encounters of people with Indianapolis police on Wednesday night into early Thursday. About eight hours after Reed's shooting, a man armed with a rifle shot at four officers responding to a reported burglary in progress at an apartment complex. Officers returned fire, killing him, police said. Between those two shootings, an officer who is a 22-year veteran of the force struck a pregnant woman who was walking on an expressway ramp as he was driving to work. Police said the officer requested help and rendered first aid to the woman. She was pronounced dead at a hospital. Her fetus also did not survive. Police Chief Randal Taylor of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department promised during a news conference that his agency would conduct thorough, transparent investigations into both shootings as well as the traffic crash. He acknowledged that the “tragic” incidents had shaken the public’s trust. |

Deadly
north side officer-involved shooting may have started as ambush
attempt on police (by a BLACK ASSASSIN) INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — IMPD is investigating after a burglary suspect was shot and killed after firing rounds at officers on the city's north side Thursday morning. The Marion County Coroner's Office has identified the suspect as 19-year-old McHale Rose. It happened just after 1:30 a.m. in the 2200 block of Woodglen Drive, near 79th Street and Township Line Road. Officers had gone to the scene for an investigation into an attempted burglary at an apartment, according to IMPD. Police said four officers, ranging in experience from two to 39 years, responded to the scene. An IMPD spokesperson said the suspect fired a rifle at the officers, and they fired back. Rose died as a result. No officers were injured. At a news conference Thursday, IMPD Chief Randal Taylor said it appears the incident may have started as an ambush attempt by the suspect. Taylor said the initial 911 call was traced back to the Rose's phone, leading investigators to believe he was trying to ambush police. Taylor could not confirm whether the incident was connected to a fatal officer-involved shooting on the northwest side earlier Wednesday. |

female) Customer shot a McDonald's employee after being told to
leave due to coronavirus restrictions, police say (CNN) A woman has been arrested on suspicion of shooting a fast-food worker and injuring others after they told her to leave a McDonald's restaurant in Oklahoma City on Wednesday, police said. Gloricia Woody had entered the restaurant that evening despite the dining area being closed because of coronavirus restrictions, according to police. When employees asked her to leave, she refused and got into a scuffle with one of them, police said. Employees eventually forced her outside, but she re-entered the restaurant with a handgun and fired about three rounds, police said. One worker was shot in the arm, and two others were struck by shrapnel. A fourth worker -- the person who was in the initial scuffle -- suffered a head injury, though it wasn't immediately clear how, according to police. Three were taken to a hospital; none of the injures was life-threatening, police said. Woody, 32, was arrested later Wednesday, Oklahoma City police Capt. Larry Withrow said. Woody was being held Wednesday night on preliminary charges of assault and battery with a deadly weapon, according to Oklahoma County jail records. |

Manuel Fraga-Madan, 66, of Hialeah, Florida, was arrested May 1 in Florida. His arraignment will be scheduled for a later date. Overland Park man charged with rape, accused of impregnating 10-year-old
girl - Her mother whored her when
she was 7 An Overland Park man is charged with child sex crimes after he allegedly impregnated a 10-year-old girl. Ronald Dejohnette Jr., 51, was charged in Johnson County District Court in March with rape, aggravated criminal sodomy and aggravated indecent liberties. According to an affidavit filed in support of Dejohnette’s arrest, the child told investigators that when she was around 7 years old she was part of a “discussion” with her mother and Dejohnette about him starting a sexual relationship with her. She and her mother, she told police, would take turns sleeping with DeJohnette. In 2018, she said, he asked her to “bear his children,” according to court records. According to police, the girl had been home schooled for two years by the time DeJohnette was arrested. After the first trimester of her pregnancy she was no longer allowed out of her home, according to the affidavit. Police were alerted to the situation after a midwife visited the girl’s home in late February to discuss a birthing plan. The midwife reported the situation after learning the girl’s age and that she hadn’t received medical attention in the 26 weeks since she became pregnant. According to court records, the girl initially told investigators she believed she had been raped but could not remember. Days later she described her relationship with Dejohnette and said she had lied in her first interview because she was afraid he would go to jail. |

Jordan was a member of an online group that was dedicated to child pornography depicting pre-pubescent boys and he gave money and gift cards to solicit sexually explicit videos from minor boys. Investigators determined last week that Jordan's online activity involved the active and ongoing solicitation of minors. The early stages of the investigation has determined that there are at least 11 minor boys associated with this case who have been identified as victims or potential victims, some of whom have not yet been identified. In addition to local victims, others are believed to be located in other states, including Pennsylvania. |

northern border illegal crossings rise; many are Mexicans SWANTON, Vt. (AP) — The number of people apprehended for illegally crossing from Canada into the United States along its northern border has nearly tripled over the past three years, and a growing portion are Mexican citizens, according to federal data. One Mexican man who crossed illegally to work on a Vermont dairy farm said it was easier than trying the southern border. U.S. Customs and Border Protection statistics obtained by The Associated Press after a public records request provide new detail on what was apparent anecdotally: Along the border from Maine to Washington, 446 of the 1,586 illegal crossers apprehended in the 2019 fiscal year were Mexican, or 28%. Around midnight, the suspects, now identified as 19-year-old Charles Harris, 18-year-old Troy Brunnetti, 19-year-old Larry Scott and 21-year-old Austin Olson, were in a white Jeep when they shot a long rifle pellet gun at random people at three different places. Sharmel Teague, 45, was arraigned via video Tuesday in district court, according to the Genesee County prosecutor’s office. Teague, her husband, Larry Teague, 44; and her son, Ramonyea Bishop, 23, face first-degree premeditated murder charges in Friday’s killing of Calvin Munerlyn, 43, at a Family Dollar near downtown Flint. ST. LOUIS — A man from St. Louis pleaded guilty Tuesday to a federal charge of impersonating a foreign diplomat to get out of a traffic stop in 2018 in Ellisville. Antuan S. Ward, 33, also goes by the name Ari’al Ban Yashar’al. After Ellisville police stopped him in April 2018 in a truck with fake temporary tags, he handed them a laminated card that read “Lawful Diplomat Sovereign and Self Determination Hebrew Israelite American National Republic Universal Dual National Identification," his plea agreement said. He said he was not a ward of the state and refused to provide his full legal name, the plea said. He also had a pistol in the truck. Ward made arguments during a 2019 court hearing that echoed those made by adherents to the Sovereign Citizen movement. He said that because his name was capitalized in his indictment, it meant that prosecutors had charged a "corporate entity," not an individual and refused to acknowledge that he was Ward, court records show. |

was driving aggressively before intentionally accelerating
toward White man who was run over and died VANCOUVER, WA (KPTV) - The 18-year-old man accused of hitting and killing a skateboarder in a Vancouver parking lot on Wednesday claims he was trying to scare the victim by driving toward him, according to court documents. Joshua Lamont Jones is facing a charge of second-degree murder. He is scheduled to make a first court appearance Thursday morning. The charge stems from an investigation that began Wednesday when officers responded to the report of a pedestrian who was hit in a parking lot in the 5000 block of East Fourth Plain Boulevard. At the scene, officers found a man, identified by court documents as 45-year-old William Miller, underneath a 2013 Hyundai Sonata that had been driven by Jones. Miller was transported to an area hospital in critical condition and later died. Jones told police that he was driving through the parking lot eastbound from General Anderson to avoid traffic lights on Fourth Plain Boulevard and drove past Miller, who was on a skateboard. Jones told police that Miller (allegedly) had an object in his hand which he thought could be a knife. Court documents state that Miller struck Jones' driver's side window with his fist as Jones drove past. Jones told police that he was not afraid of being hurt by Miller, but was angry that Miller had (allegedly) struck his window. According to court documents, Jones then made a U-turn, accelerated toward Miller and hit him. Jones told police that he intended to swerve out of the way before hitting Miller, but claimed Miller jumped in the same direction that he swerved. Jones told police that he intended "to scare him" by driving his vehicle toward Miller. He also stated that he knew if he hit Miller, he knew it would cause serious injury or death. Witnesses told police that they saw the Hyundai driving aggressively through the parking lot before the crash. Witnesses also reported that it appeared the Hyundai drove close to Miller while in the parking lot. - (Black-on-White) |

The Baton Rouge Police Department posthumously promoted Hutto to the rank of lieutenant after the shooting. The other officer, Cpl. Police: Man ambushed police; stood over body, kept shooting According to the affidavit supporting the first warrant for Kato, his girlfriend of 18 years had taken refuge at her mother's house after an argument, went out because her car horn was beeping and went back in when she saw Kato. He kicked down the door and pistol-whipped her. Her mother stopped him, but he went out and came back in with a rifle, killing a man — one of five adults living there. Police identified the man as Curtis Richardson, 58, news outlets reported. Evidence, including what appeared to be close-contact wounds, indicated that Kato had stood over the dead officer's body and kept shooting him, the statement said. It noted that both shootings used the same type of gun and quoted Kato's girlfriend as telling police in 2017 that he would “Gavin Long” police if she filed a report about him. Gavin Eugene Long was a member of a black anti-government movement who shot six police officers in 2016, killing three and wounding the others. He was arrested after an hours long standoff in which shots were exchanged with a SWAT team. |

Area man accused of kidnapping, attempting to rape child A Hagerstown-area man was being held without bail after being accused of kidnapping and attempting to rape a preteen girl on Monday. The Washington County Sheriff's Office also charged Nelson David Garcia Vicente with sexual abuse of a minor, sexual solicitation of a minor and other related offenses, court records said. A deputy went to a residence Wednesday evening for a report of a sexual assault. Vicente was walking out of the residence when the deputy arrived and was placed in custody on an unrelated outstanding warrant, the document said. A woman at the residence told the deputy one of her daughters witnessed her younger sister being "dragged" out of the house by Vicente Monday evening, the document said. The victim told the deputy that Vicente took her to his car and drove her to a parking lot, the document said. While there, Vicente forced what the child described as a rag into her mouth, exposed himself and tried to rape her. Later that night, the girl's mother saw her daughter with Vicente's bank card, the document said. When the mother asked about the card, the girl said Vicente told her she could use it to buy video games if she "would not tell anyone what happened." After the mother learned what happened, Vicente left the house, but later contacted her using WhatsApp, the document said. The communications included recorded messages, in one of which Vicente apologized "for what he had done" and offered her money in exchange for keeping quiet. The girl was taken to Meritus Medical Center for a forensic examination, the document said. The charging document said Vicente admitted to inappropriately touching the child. |

female) Indiana Postal Worker Shot Dead After Refusing to
Deliver Mail to (Black) Man With Aggressive Dog An Indiana man charged with murdering a U.S. postal worker this week admitted he confronted her because his mail delivery had been suspended due to his “aggressive dog,” prosecutors said. Tony Cushingberry-Mays, 21, was charged with second-degree murder, assaulting a federal employee, and discharging a firearm during a crime for the death of Angela Summers, a 45-year-old postal worker who was gunned down Monday afternoon during her mail delivery route in east Indianapolis, according to the United States District Court of Southern Indiana. The mother-of-one, who had joined the U.S. Postal Service in 2018, died in the hospital. According to federal law, killing an on-duty federal employee can be punishable by death or a life sentence. To date, the Bureau of Labor Statistics says four postal workers have been killed during workplace homicides in the last seven years. “Angela was such a joy to be around, she was such a breath of fresh air. This is the worst thing that’s happened in my career,” Paul Toms, president of the National Association of Letters Carriers’ Indianapolis branch, told The Daily Beast on Wednesday. “This is a federal crime, but more importantly this is a senseless crime that should have never happened. It breaks my heart.” Summers, a city carrier assistant at the USPS Linwood Indianapolis Post Office, was delivering mail at about 4 p.m. Monday when she bypassed Cushingberry-Mays’ home in compliance with a suspension that had been put in place until he contained his dogs. An angry Cushingberry-Mays approached Summers on his neighbor's front porch, standing about 6 feet away, and repeatedly asked her for the mail. Cushingberry-Mays was allegedly upset about not getting his COVID-19 stimulus check when he confronted Summers. Summers, however, could not deliver his mail “because she was having a problem with the dog at his residence,” the complaint said, adding that Summers had reported “several issues” with the dog, which had resulted in mail being held. Prosecutors said the USPS Linwood Indianapolis Post Office last sent a letter to the Cushingberry-Mays residence on April 13 indicating they would have to pick up mail from the post office. Toms said that, in compliance with USPS guidelines, Summers had reported an issue with dogs at the home. After three warning letters were sent, mail had been blocked from the home for about two weeks and “wasn’t even given to Angela that day of the incident.” “She was just following protocol, and the Postal Service curtailed the mail. It was not her fault that she didn’t have the mail that day,” Toms said. “My understanding is that she tried to explain that the mail could be picked up at another location and an argument ensued. I heard she was called horrible, horrible names.” The postal worker’s response triggered an argument, escalating to the point that Summers had to use pepper spray on the 21-year-old. “Cushingberry-Mays then pulled his handgun from the right side of his waistband (no holster), pointed his handgun at the letter carrier, and fired one shot at the letter carrier,” the criminal complaint states. “He acknowledged the mace was not deadly but led to discomfort from his asthma.” Cushingberry-Mays admitted in a Tuesday interview with police that he ran away after shooting Summers, first going to his aunt’s house before hiding the gun in the garage at his mother’s. He told authorities “he did not mean to kill the letter carrier but wanted to scare her.” Union Sister Angela Summers passed away this evening, 4/27/2020. She worked at the Lynwood Station in Indianapolis,... - (Black-on-White) |
