Texas — A 61-year-old Texas inmate was set to be executed Wednesday
for killing a Houston police officer more than three decades ago
during a robbery.Robert Jennings was condemned for the July 1988 slaying of Officer Elston Howard during a robbery at an adult bookstore. Jennings would be the first inmate put to death this year both in the U.S. and in Texas, which is the nation's busiest capital punishment state. His attorneys have asked the U.S. Supreme Court to delay the execution, arguing Jennings' trial attorneys failed to ask jurors to fully consider evidence — including details of his remorse for the officer's shooting, troubled childhood and possible brain damage — that might have spared him a death sentence. |

churchgoer thanks to an NYPD clerical error — which may have also

cops. Linden Beaton, 31, is suspected of killing 69-year-old
Johynita Jordan, who has
been missing since Jan. 18. Her body was discovered Thursday in an
abandoned house in Stapleton.Cops say the alleged murder happened just days after Beaton mercilessly pummeled a home-health aide named Beatrice Kaliku as she headed to a local prayer meeting. Beaton fled after the attack and cops launched an investigation. But it ended prematurely after a civilian employee “mistakenly labeled the job closed, and the supervisor did not catch the error,” according to NYPD officials. The mistake didn’t come to light until after Kaliku’s family contacted police and a local councilwoman to see why cops hadn’t talked to her yet following her release from the hospital. |

Female Stabbing Suspect in Custody After Leading LAPD on Chase
Through North Hollywood Area A
woman suspected of assault with a deadly weapon in connection with a
stabbing led officers on a chase through the North Hollywood area
before being taken into custody Monday afternoon, Los Angeles Police
Department officials said. She was seen handcuffed by officers just
before 1 p.m. after driving at a high rate of speed through surface
streets as police trailed her, aerial footage from Sky5 shows. At
12:55 p.m., she was seen crossing over a double yellow line and
traveling toward oncoming traffic as she tried to avoid being pulled
over. A minute to two later, the female driver was seen jumping out
of the vehicle and running from the scene before being taken down by
officers as a dog followed her from behind in North Hills. A
bystander later found the dog and turned it over to officers at the
scene, who took it into their custody, according to LAPD. |

woman was sexually assaulted in a car after she was given a ride by
a stranger, Mesquite police said Monday.The woman escaped from the vehicle and alerted another person who called Mesquite police Monday morning. Authorities continued to search for the suspect and the suspect’s vehicle on Tuesday. Mesquite police received the report about 9:30 a.m Monday. The woman told detectives she had been walking when a car pulled up beside her and the driver asked if she needed a ride because of the cold temperatures. The woman got into the car and told the man where she was going, authorities said. The stranger drove her to the address where he sexually assaulted her in the car. VILLAGE, Manhattan (WABC) -- Police say three people attacked a good
Samaritan who tried to stop them from harassing an
elderly couple at a McDonald's restaurant in
Manhattan, and they're hoping new photos of the suspects will lead
to arrests. The attack happened last month in the East Village.
Authorities say the suspects repeatedly punched and kicked the
44-year-old victim and then ran away. The man wasn't seriously hurt,
but was treated at Beth Israel Hospital.The first suspect is a black male, 14 to 17 years old, 5-foot-7 and 140 pounds. He was last seen wearing a pink hooded sweater, black sweatpants and black and white sneakers. The second individual is a black female, 14 to 17 years old, 5-foot-8 and 135 pounds with red or light brown hair. She was last seen wearing gray hooded sweater, a black jacket, red and yellow pants and gray and white sneakers. The third suspect is a black male 14 to 17 years old, 5-foot-5 and 170 pounds. He was last seen wearing eyeglasses, a red hooded sweater, a beige jacket and blue jeans. South Carolina man reportedly fakes own kidnapping for $130 A
South Carolina man was arrested after he allegedly faked his own
kidnapping to try to swindle his mother out of $130.
Emmanuel Franklin, 19, plotted his alleged plan on Jan.
22. Franklin reportedly told his mother that if she didn't put
the money in a mailbox of his choosing, that he would be murdered by
kidnappers. The mother told Sumter County deputies she received a
call from her son and a man she didn't know, and relayed the
incident to them. The man later reportedly fessed up to
investigators, and allegedly admitted to trying to get the money
from his mother. |

after he shot a man in a dispute over a woman, officials said.
Robert Campbell was arraigned in Westchester County Court
today after a grand jury indicted him on several charges, including
murder, the Westchester County District Attorney's Office said.Campbell, 40, is accused of shooting then 36-year-old Diesel Mercedes while the victim was with his 2-year-old daughter outside a party in Mount Vernon on July 1. Mercedes was taken to a hospital and went into a medically-induced coma, and he died on Oct. 25, officials said. Campbell was hit with the murder charge after Mercedes' death and the indictment. |

Brooklyn subway train early Thursday morning, authorities said.
Daniel Jean-Pierre, 37, was hit with attempted rape, robbery,

Jean-Pierre allegedly attacked the 27-year-old woman after she got
on to a Manhattan-bound No. 4 train at about 1:15 a.m. on Thursday,

messages on his social media accounts was indicted Tuesday on
charges of targeting a Jewish house of worship, federal prosecutors
in northern Ohio said.Authorities have said Damon Joseph, 21, of Holland, Ohio, planned to kill worshipers inside a synagogue in Toledo with an assault rifle. A federal grand jury indictment charges him with attempting to provide material support to ISIS, attempting to commit a hate crime and possessing firearms in furtherance of a crime of violence. CNN has reached out to an attorney for Joseph, but has not received a response. Joseph, also known as Abdullah Ali Yusuf, was arrested after taking possession of two semi-automatic rifles in December, authorities said. Investigators became aware of Joseph after they noticed pictures of knives and firearms on his social media accounts, court records show. FBI agents posing as members of ISIS began a monthslong conversation with Joseph in which he offered his services in creating propaganda videos, officials said. In September, agents asked Joseph whether he hated people in America. "Oh yeah, definitely," answered Joseph, according to court records. week in Alabama said the state is violating his rights by requiring
a Christian prison chaplain to stand near him as he is put to death,
according to a lawsuit filed this week.Dominique Ray is scheduled to be executed Feb. 7 for the fatal stabbing of 15-year-old Tiffany Harville in 1995. Attorneys for the 42-year-old inmate have asked a federal judge in the suit filed Monday to stay his execution while the court considers his claim. Attorneys for Ray said the prison warden refused Ray's request to have a Muslim imam stand in the execution chamber instead of the prison chaplain during the planned lethal injection. They said the warden also refused his request to not have the chaplain present during his execution. |

a house, forcibly raping her, and threatening her with a weapon

Man killed in shooting during funeral in Compton - (black

Calif. (FOX 11) - Police are investigating a shooting in Compton
Friday afternoon that left one person dead and at least two others
injured. The shooting was reported shortly after 1 p.m. in the 1900
block of East Compton Boulevard, outside the New Holy Trinity
Baptist Church. One man died at the scene from his injuries. That
person's identity has not been released but investigators say he
was shot in the head. They say another
person was shot in the upper torso. A witness said the
incident began with an argument inside the New Holy Trinity Baptist
Church during a funeral -- they were honoring a woman that was
killed in a hit-and-run crash. The witness said the fight was
among family members and that argument carried over outside.
At some point during the argument, someone took out a gun and fired

city of Philadelphia has agreed to settle a sexual harassment
lawsuit filed by a former employee at the Sheriff's Office for
$127,500. The Philadelphia Inquirer reports a lawyer for Sheriff
Jewell Williams says the 61-year-old had no part in the
settlement, and it "does not mean the allegations are true."
Marlaina Williams, of no relation to the sheriff,

Kim Williams was convicted of stealing $750,000 from Healing Arts Initiative between 2012 and 2015. oath that the janitor at his Catholic middle school had repeatedly
raped him as a boy. He hoped a jury would hear his words of
anguish from beyond the grave. In a highly unusual move, Manhattan
Supreme Court Justice Gerald Connolly last month granted an
emergency request to let Erickson give a sworn statement to
“preserve his testimony” for a lawsuit he wanted to file against the
church. Wasting away from terminal skin cancer, Erickson gave a
videotaped sworn statement from his bed at Albany Medical Center on
Dec. 12. He died seven days later.Erickson accused Eugene Hubert, a janitor at St. Teresa of Avila School in Albany, which he attended in 1977 to 1978, of sexually assaulting him “three times a week.” Hubert “penetrated me in the mens’ room and boys’ room,” Erickson testified, saying the abuse was also oral. “I want to talk to the jury,” said Erickson, an Air Force veteran and electrician whose marriage collapsed under the stress. “It has ruined my life. Basically, this guy just ruined my life. … I lost my adolescence, just not growing up as a normal kid.” A lawyer for the Roman Catholic Diocese attended the deposition. Several other men also claim they were sexually abused at St. Teresa’s, which closed about 10 years ago, by Hubert or Gary Mercure, a priest who was later de-frocked and sentenced to 24 years in a Massachusetts prison for raping boys, The Albany Times-Union reported. |

Mich. (WXYZ) — Monroe Police have released the name and photo of the
suspected gunman believed to be involved in the fatal shooting
Tuesday night. According to police,
the woman left injured from a gunshot wound was able to identify
the shooter as 23-year-old Marquis Terrell Evans.
Evans -- who also goes by "Marcus" -- is still at large and is
considered "armed and dangerous," police say.A second victim, Gregory Thomas James, 38, was killed in the shooting. The name of the woman is being withheld for her protection, police say. Surveillance video from a nearby store showed the woman and man walking by a home just before 8 p.m. Tuesday. The shooting happened outside of camera range. Police are not releasing the names of the victims. They say the shooting could be drug-related. Elgin, following his guilty plea to armed robbery, the DuPage County
state’s attorney’s office said in a statement. Jones, along with
two other co-defendants, kidnapped the student on Aug. 26,
2016 in downtown Glen Ellyn and drove him to multiple ATMs and
forced him to withdraw more than $1,500 from his account,
prosecutors said. Later that morning, they drove the victim to
Chicago and released him, prosecutors said. He ran to the nearest
building a called 911. Glen Ellyn police investigated the incident
and arrested Jones the next month.A third co-defendant, Timothy Jones, Jeremy Jones’ brother, was shot and killed in December 2017 in an unrelated matter, prosecutors said. Jones has been held on $3 million bond since 2016 at DuPage County Jail, prosecutors said. “This afternoon, Mr. Jones learned that his outrageous actions nearly two and one-half years ago will cost him a significant amount of time behind bars,” DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said. several other counts in a carjacking and two armed robberies. San
Francisco Police Investigations Bureau Commander Greg McEachern
announced at a press conference Wednesday that Keonte Gathron
allegedly was involved in a carjacking and two armed robberies
in the days following the Jan. 8 assault. He was arrested after a
short foot pursuit in Visitacion Valley following the carjacking and
robberies on Jan. 19th.McEachern said DNA found on a pair gloves linked Gathron to the assault on the grandmother. His DNA was in the SFPD database because of Gathron’s previous criminal history as a juvenile. He was being held in San Francisco County jail on charges that included attempted murder, kidnapping, elderly abuse, child endangerment, armed robbery and resisting arrest. |

Mondragon was charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, according to arresting documents. Jalen G'Vonte Hines, 18, of Greenville turned himself in at the Pickens County Law Enforcement Center earlier Thursday night, deputies said. Deputies say Hines and Mondragon were identified as suspects during an investigation of Robert Tyler Butler's death. Butler died from injuries he suffered after he was shot with a small-caliber weapon. His body was discovered on the side of the road when a passerby called police. An investigation revealed the shooting happened during a transaction of money for drugs in Easley, deputies said. The shooting happened 11 hours before Butler's body was found on the side of the road, deputies said. Hines is also charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. |

people were arrested on drug charges following an investigation into
a man pleasuring himself in a Dover Target dressing room
with the door open, city authorities announced Friday.
According to authorities, officers were dispatched to the Target at
148 John Hunn Brown Road on both Saturday, January 19, and Thursday,
January 24, 2019, for reports of a man they identified as Lewis
Foreman, 23, of Dover, masturbating in a fitting room
while the door was open. In both cases, he fled the store in a gold
Jaguar. Police said on January 24, after he fled around 9:15 a.m., officers tracked Foreman to the unit block of Stevenson Drive, in the Manchester Square neighborhood. Foreman arrived in the area, police said, but he fled on foot when officers tried to stop him, entering a residence through a rear door and hiding in the attic with 20-year-old Tyra Mifflin. A 3-year-old child was left in a bedroom during the pair hiding, authorities said. Both surrendered to police without incident a short time later, authorities said. A search warrant executed at the same residence turned up 8.75 pounds of marijuana in sealed bags, digital scales, packaging materials, and $4,432 in suspected drug proceeds. Also taken into custody was 29-year-old Keyarra Johnson, who arrived at the residence while officers were at the scene. |

Missing
(white) woman found dead, (BLACK) man charged in her death  DRAVOSBURG,
Pa. - The skeletal remains of a missing woman were found
Wednesday morning and a man is now facing homicide charges.
Heather Short, 46,
disappeared Nov. 10, 2018. She leaves behind three children.
Detectives identified Dale Cooper, 36, as the person
responsible for Short's death. Cooper told investigators
he and Short were doing drugs together at a home in West
Mifflin on Nov. 7 and when he woke up, Short was gone, detectives
said. According to the criminal complaint, a witness told
investigators that Cooper allegedly murdered Short by strangling her
with an extension cord inside the West Mifflin home. The witness
told investigators Cooper put her clothes into a piece of plastic
and doused her with bleach. According to the complaint,
Cooper loaded her body into a vehicle and then dumped it in a wooded
area along Scott Haven Road in Sewickley Township, Westmoreland
County. Cooper allegedly told witnesses he had to kill her
because he was afraid she was going to tell a drug dealer that he

young woman who got separated from her friend outside a bar in
Minneapolis after a night of heavy drinking this past fall woke
up in a stranger’s bed without her clothes on, authorities
say. The man she found lying next to her, Tyreese Willis Harris,
was charged via warrant Wednesday with two counts of first-degree
criminal sexual conduct for allegedly raping the 23-year-old in the
early morning hours of Nov. 18, according to the criminal complaint
filed against him in Ramsey County District Court. Harris, 42, has a
history of sexual assault. He was convicted of attempted aggravated
sexual assault in Illinois back in 1999, and was subsequently
convicted of failing to register for predatory offender status in

assaulting a Lake Village teenage girl looking to enlist.Staff Sgt. Alexander Louis, 27, worked out of a recruiting office in Waukegan, but also made several visits to Lake County high schools. Investigators said Wednesday that it's possible there are more alleged victims out there. "Unfortunately this is a situation where somebody overstepped their authority and abused their authority," said Sgt. Chris Covelli, of the Lake County Sheriff's Department. Detectives said that Louis met the girl while assigned to the Waukegan recruiting office off Green Bay Road, but then allegedly visited the juvenile's home in unincorporated Lake Villa at least three times without her parents' knowledge. "The parents certainly had some concerns about some images they had recovered from the juvenile's cellphone, and they brought it to our attention," Covelli said. |

himself to children in school playground HOUMA,
La. — A 74-year-old man was arrested after he exposed his
genitals while near a school in Houma. The incident occurred
on Tuesday, Jan. 22 around 10:30 a.m. when a member of the Houma
Police Department patrol division was on campus of St. Francis De
Sales School speaking with a group of students. The patrol officer
was then notified of the man near the campus exposing his genitals.
As the officer approached the man, he saw that his pants were
down, and he was staring at the playground of the school. The
police department notes the
playground was occupied by children at the time. The
man, identified as 74-year-old Johnell Westbrook, was taken
into custody without incident. Westbrook was taken to the Terrebonne

The News Journal reports 59-year-old Jose Rivera was charged with knowingly using methyl bromide in the St. John condominium complex where the Esmond family stayed in 2015. He was also charged with applying it in St. Croix and St. Thomas. He pleaded guilty to four counts. Stephen Esmond became paralyzed after checking into a unit above one where Terminix had sprayed the odorless neurotoxin. His sons were in critical condition for weeks. |

charges.Roth “Craig” LeFebvre, the St. Louis County Health Department spokesperson since 2007, was an innocent bystander who was shot and killed during a robbery attempt at the Grand Boulevard MetroLink station in the city of St. Louis. LeFebvre was shot in the chest and died at the hospital. The robbery victim spoke with police and explained that McKinley and a group of others tried to steal his money, bus pass and cell phone. He says that McKinley pointed a gun at him and racked it several times. The victim fired in response to the robbery and unintentionally struck Lefebvre.
