73-year-old (White) woman with a MACHETE SHELBURNE, Vt. (WCAX) A Burlington BEAST faces attempted murder charges after allegedly attacking a woman with a machete. “It's pretty scary yes,” said Carl Mcmahon. Mcmahon is staying at Harbor Place in Shelburne. Harbor Place provides temporary emergency housing with services, run by the Champlain Housing Trust. Early Friday, police responded to calls of a man with a knife smashing out car windows. “On arrival we found that this person who was reported to have a knife, had actually attacked an elderly female,” said Corporal Jon Marcoux of Shelburne Police. That female, was a 73-year-old Meals on Wheels volunteer who was dropping off meals on the regular route. It is unclear what provoked the attack, but police say 32-year-old Abukar Ibrahim was the one with a machete. He attacked the woman who sustained multiple injuries. She was sent to the hospital, and later released. “He barricaded himself in the room. After two and a half hours, he came out on his own,” said Marcoux. |

Court is sending his case back to the lower courts. The Supreme Court sent the case of a black death row inmate who was convicted, in part, by a juror who used a racial slur to describe him, back to the lower courts Monday, after finding that prior decisions to not allow for an appeal based on the issue were in error. Keith Tharpe was convicted of murder in 1991 and sentenced to the death penalty after allegedly raping his estranged wife and killing his sister-in-law the year prior. Attorneys for Tharpe argued that a member of the jury, Barney Gattie, was influenced by Tharpe's race and that he used the n-word in reference to Tharpe. |

- buggering boys 11 to 17 - passing DEADLY STD A former Maryland middle school aide and track coach accused of sexually assaulting 42 juveniles pleaded guilty Friday to more than two dozen charges of child sex abuse, officials said. The Charles County State's Attorney's Office says 30-year-old Carlos Bell entered the guilty plea to 27 counts. His trial on 206 child abuse offenses had been set to begin Monday. Prosecutors say Bell abused boys at his Waldorf home as well as at his workplace, Benjamin Stoddert Middle School, between May 2015 and June 2017. The state's attorney's office said the ages of the alleged victims ranged from 11 to 17 years old. Police said Bell allegedly assaulted students without wearing protection, but investigators said they were not aware of any of the victims testing positive for HIV. Authorities began investigating Bell in December 2016 after a parent found inappropriate text messages on her child's phone. At that time, Bell was removed from his position as track coach at La Plata High School. In addition to the alleged assaults, police said child pornography was found on Bell's home computer and electronic devices. After Bell was arrested in June, Charles County Sheriff Troy Berry said some of the "graphic images" showed Bell having sex with students. Bell is scheduled to be sentenced March 28. He faces up to 190 years in prison. |

Sleaze who duped women on dating sites gets 4 years in prison A con-man who posed as an oil tycoon in online dating sites to lure women into relationships so he could steal their identities was slapped with nearly four years behind bars Thursday as his victims lashed into him. Eight women submitted letters beseeching Manhattan federal court Judge Laura Swain to throw the book at scam artist John Edward Taylor before she sentenced him to three years and 10 months in prison. Four of them trudged through the heavy snowstorm to confront him in person. When they realized the funds were missing, he would make empty promises or threaten them — often saying he would send nude pictures of the women to their bosses unless they dropped it. |
Immigrant
sentenced in Kate Steinle shooting as Steinle family prepares
for next fight One criminal case is over, and an undocumented immigrant is slated for deportation. But for Kate Steinle’s parents, the legal battle over who is responsible for their daughter’s death is just entering its next phase. Jose Ines Garcia Zarate was sentenced Friday to time served for unlawful possession of a firearm, the Associated Press reported, following a jury’s decision in November to reject murder charges against the serial illegal alien Mexican national for firing a bullet that killed Steinle as she strolled down a San Francisco pier in 2015. The acquittal provoked a fresh flurry of protest including from President Trump, who had used Steinle on the campaign trail to make the case for a border wall, an end to sanctuary cities and stricter immigration policy. |

The woman said she entered the convenience store at about 10:20 a.m. Monday when a man she'd never met swung at her on his way out, giving her a broken nose. She had reconstructive surgery Thursday morning. "The ferocity of this attack is just indicative of the criminals knowing there's no deterrent out here, they can do what they want," said Steve Jensen of the Bucktown Community Organization.
