(Black) Ex-boyfriend stabbed (white) woman as she drove on I-64 The 46-year-old Fishersville woman found last week on the side of Interstate 64 with serious stab wounds to her neck and abdomen was in the driver’s seat of a car headed eastbound on the interstate when the attack occurred. Police were called to the Afton Mountain area of I-64 eastbound, near mile marker 101, early Tuesday night for a report that was initially described a “stalking/carjacking.” Officers arrived at the scene to find Tricia Bowersox lying in the shoulder of the eastbound lanes, bleeding from stab wounds to her neck and abdomen. She was taken to the University of Virginia Medical Center, where she was listed in critical condition late Tuesday night. Police say the victim’s ex-boyfriend, Rodney D. Burnett, 46, of Indiana, was in the passenger seat of the 2014 Subaru that Bowersox was driving when he began to stab her with a knife. Bowersox was apparently able to pull over and either stop or slow the car down enough to safely get out of the vehicle. Burnett then jumped into the driver’s seat and took off, leaving his ex-girlfriend seriously wounded on the side of the road. He was eventually apprehended later Tuesday evening. SEATTLE STINKS OF URINE AND EXCREMENT * Black Councilmember against power-washing because it reminds him of 60's South Two King County Superior Court judges are asking for help cleaning up the courthouse at Third Avenue and James Street after they say two jurors and half a dozen employees have been assaulted. The judges, Laura Inveen and Jim Rogers, acknowledged Tuesday that there are difficult underlying circumstances contributing to the unsanitary and potentially frightening atmosphere around the courthouse. They — along with King County Sheriff John Urquhart — also recognized that there are two elements at play: crime and the fear of crime, with the latter being just as likely to keep people away as the former. The nearby blocks host most of the city’s homeless-shelter beds and many of its social-service outlets, which draw those who need help and the people who prey on them. That’s nothing new, Rogers said. Councilmember Larry Gossett said he didn’t like the idea of power-washing the sidewalks because it brought back images of the use of hoses against civil-rights activists |

Police: Fatal shooting of black man in Birmingham might have been retaliation for sexual assault of minor Police believe a homicide this afternoon in southwest Birmingham occurred in retaliation for an alleged sexual assault of a 13-year-old girl. The victim of the shooting was a black male in his late forties, said Birmingham Police Department spokesman Lt. Sean Edwards. The victim was living with a woman who had a 13-year-old daughter. Edwards said the shooting appeared to occur after she told family members she had been sexually assaulted by her mother's boyfriend. Police are investigating the sexual assault allegations and they have not been confirmed, Edwards said. "It's a very unfortunate thing because you always hope that family members will not take justice into their own hands," he said. Edwards said family members and friends might have been involved in the murder. So far, no one has been taken into custody, he said. The victim was found at 1128 15th Place SW. An alley behind several houses has been roped off with crime scene tape. Officers responded at 3:14 p.m. to a call that someone had been shot, he said. The victim died on the scene. The investigation is ongoing. So far, it appears the shooters chased the victim on foot and he fled for a short period of time before falling due to his injuries. |

Money from the charity would go toward helping single parents, cleaning streets and fighting childhood obesity, Wills said when he set up the organization. 1-year-old daughter sexually assaulted by children at babysitter's home NORFOLK, Va. -- Police are investigating a mother's claim that two children sexually assaulted her 1-year-old daughter while the girl was in the care of a babysitter. Lichella Harris told officers the incident happened July 5 while her friend and her friend's sister were watching her daughter. 13News Now spoke to Harris. "From what I was told, it was told that the little boy and his friend took off her Pamper, fondled her, and tried to insert themselves inside her," stated Harris. The mother said she filed the complaint with Norfolk police a few days after the babysitter's sister called her and told her what happened. Police confirmed they're investigating and said Harris' baby received medical attention, although detectives said the girl was not hurt. Police told 13News Now at the time the alleged incident took place, the children had been left alone. "If you were actually keeping an eye on my child, none of this would've transpired in the first place," said Harris. Crystal Mann and Sarafina Mann were charged with Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor, although how those charges related to the allegations was not clear. In order to protect the integrity of the ongoing criminal investigation, police said they could not release additional information about the case. Because of the ages of the juvenile suspects involved, the completed case file will be turned over to the Norfolk Commonwealth's Attorney's Office for review. |

(BLACK) Contra Costa murder defendant allowed to represent himself despite outburst; (White female) prosecutor fears for her safety MARTINEZ — A Contra Costa judge allowed a murder defendant to continue serving as his own attorney Friday, one day after the man knocked over a chair in court and allegedly screamed at the judge in chambers. Derrick Harper, 39, is on trial with Joseph Bradshaw, 42, facing charges of murdering Antioch resident Jesse Saucedo, 35, during a 2008 robbery on behalf of a prison gang. He was being represented by a private attorney at the start of trial, but this week he was allowed to represent himself. Since then, Harper’s conduct has been so erratic that prosecutor Mary Knox says she now fears for her safety in court. After Judge John W. Kennedy allowed Harper to keep his pro-per status Friday — denying a prosecution motion asking that it be revoked — Knox moved for additional security and that Harper be shackled. Kennedy said he would consider beefing up courtroom security but denied the motion to shackle Harper to his chair. “I did not feel there was any threatening conduct by Mr. Harper,” the judge said. Harper and Bradshaw were charged in 2013 with the August 2008 killing of Saucedo. It is alleged that Harper carried out the act, shooting Saucedo in the head while he was robbing him. Earlier this year, Harper was convicted of human trafficking and rape in a case Knox prosecuted, where he was convicted of directing friends to gang rape a woman for disobeying him. During his time in County Jail, Harper has been housed in D Module, which is reserved for violent or dangerous inmates. Knox said he has started riots, referred to her using an expletive in jail phone calls, and threatened to harm jail guards. “He is completely unstable,” Knox said. - (Black-on-white) |

Puppy at center of alleged abuse case in Detroit won't be returned to (black) owners DETROIT - A day after Detroit Police feared the life of a puppy could be in immediate danger, we're told the 8-month-old pit bull named "Sona" won't be returned to her owners later this week after all. It was originally said she would be returned after she'd been spayed. The came after officials said they examined the dog and found no signs of abuse. However, officials now say they had examined the wrong dog and a new examination has shown that Sona did show signs of abuse. Because of that she will not be returned to the family. A tipster recently provided one video that appears to show a child hitting and then kicking Sona. Another video appears to show a man striking the puppy with a garden hose. Before today's decision was reversed, Brandy Byrd said she was eager to get their puppy back. |

Hopkins says that as she was leaving the nail salon, she saw a plus-size woman in the back of the salon. The five teens, alleged to have been directly involved with the home invasion, are Jordan William Alexander, Zicary Lamar Carpenter, Joshua Jeremiah Eubanks, Tyler Jameil Pagel, and Dre Shavon Jones. According to police, the 63-year-old victim, Albert Ballard, was asleep on a couch on the first floor of his home when the teens entered the house through an unlocked door. Once inside the house, one suspect held Ballard at gun point, telling him to "give him all the money," police said in court. In the same moment, another suspect began to leave the home with Ballard's television, while the other three teens went to the second floor of the home where Ballard's wife, Jan, was sleeping, police said. Striking her in the face with another gun, the trio instructed the woman to hand over her money, police said. After Ballard shot one of the teens in the chest, the teen - accompanied by his friend who was previously leaving the home with the television - fled the scene in a vehicle, crashing less than a mile away from the home in the intersection of East Court Street and South Vernon Avenue. One of the teen suspects was taken to Hurley Medical Center following the crash, where he has not yet been released, police said. Ballard then ran upstairs to protect his wife where he struggled with one of the defendants and several rounds of gunfire were shot, police said. One of the bullets traveled through Ballard's arm to his chest, and he was later pronounced dead, police said. - (Black-on-white) |
