Steve said the cop impersonator came over to his car, carrying a gun in a camouflage holster. Steve said he was forced out of his car at gunpoint, hit over the head with the gun, tossed face first to the ground, put in handcuffs and then robbed. He said the crook stole $400 out of his wallet and continued to taunt him as he tossed the dollar bills and change at Steve as he laid handcuffed on the ground. After the imposter took off his handcuffs, Steve says he told him not to follow him and remain on the ground or he would kill him. Steve described him as a black man in his 30s, approximately 6 feet tall, wearing a black polo and black cargo pants with a shaved head and pencil thin mustache with a hint of gray. - (Black-on-white) |

After a sentencing Wednesday, Aaron Hudgins will spend the next several years of his life in prison for biting a 17-month-old child so badly that the grandma thought he had been mauled by a dog. Judge Charles King said that what Hudgins did was barbaric, and if he could give Hudgins more time behind bars that he would do so without delay. But Hudgins pleaded guilty to the crime and King sentenced him from two to 10 years for biting the child and causing blunt force trauma to his head and from one to five years for using meth while he did it. Those sentences are to be served consecutively. Judge King says he plans to recommend to the parole board that Hudgins serves every last day of his sentence. During sentencing Wednesday, Hudgins apologized, blaming drugs for his actions and pledging to seek rehabilitation. But Tiffany Taylor, the victim's mother, says the words ring insincere to her. "He's worthless, he's a monster, I mean, he hurt my baby. Death wouldn't be good enough for him to me," Taylor said. |

Jurors convicted Powell of second-degree murder for the death of Gerstel, who he shot first, and first-degree murder for the death of Sartain, who he shot next as she tried to run away. Powell said he was angry at the time he fired a barrage of bullets at the two girls because he’d been high on drugs for two days . Powell’s lawyer , Darryl Stallworth, admitted during the trial that Powell shot both girls but said he should only be found guilty of two counts of the lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter because he acted rashly and in the heat of passion. Gerstel and Sartain were friends who grew up together in Alameda. Gerstel lived in San Leandro and was a freshman at Arroyo High School in San Lorenzo. Sartain lived on High Street in Oakland, a few blocks from where the shooting happened. Sartain and Gerstel were involved in (statuatory rape) relationships with Powell and his friend Antonio Edwards, respectively. Edwards is already serving a term of 95 years to life in state prison because he was convicted last year of robbery, rape, assault with a deadly weapon and other sex charges for allegedly assaulting a woman and knocking her boyfriend unconscious in an unrelated incident. Powell got a call from one of his girlfriends and asked Sartain and Gerstel to leave. Gerstel’s father, Barton Gerstel, said Friday, “I’m glad the trial is finally over but this doesn’t bring Raquel back.” Gerstel said Powell’s apology “kind of counts for something but it doesn’t change the fact that I can never have grandchildren from my daughter and I can never see her smile again.” - (Black-on-white) |

Man man extradited from US found guilty of eight counts of rape A US citizen who was extradited to the UK to stand trial has been found guilty of a violent rape he committed 20 years ago. Pierre Antoine Bate, 42,, of Maricopa Drive, Santa Barbara broke in and carried out a violent and sustained attack on a woman in her south London home. During the early hours of July 22 1996 the victim awoke in her Thornton Heath home to find Bate in her bedroom staring at her. He told her that a friend of his was with her children in the room next door, and then placed his arm across her throat and raped and indecently assaulted her several times for more than an hour and a half, when he fled the scene and the victim was able to call police. Detectives investigating the crime managed to recover a partial DNA profile, but at that time it was not enough to identify a suspect. However, in 2011, a forensic review of the investigation was conducted, and material taken at the time of the original investigation was examined using enhanced DNA techniques. - (UK) |

Judge denies motion for serial rapist MORGAN COUNTY, AL - Attorneys for a serial rapist who assaulted women in Decatur thirty years ago made a motion that would lead to a reduced sentence on Friday morning. Within hours, the judge rejected the request. David Lee Garth's attorneys submitted his case for youthful offender status to Morgan County Circuit Judge Steven Haddock. Haddock promptly denied the status. In November of 2015, a Morgan County jury convicted David Lee Garth on three counts of First Degree Rape for a series of attacks at an apartment complex from November of 1985 through May of 1986. A Decatur Police Department task force assigned to the investigation arrested Garth for First Degree Burglary and one count of First Degree Rape in 1986, and he was convicted in 1987. Burglary is first degree if the perpetrator is armed, and Garth was armed with a handgun. Investigators believed he was the rapist in several other cases, but with no DNA testing capabilities at the time of the crimes, they were unable to make the charges against Garth then. Authorities kept the forensic samples from the rape kits. In 2012, as Garth served his sentence in a state prison, a cold case task force matched his DNA to three rapes of victims in the 1985-86 cases. |

EB’s Corner, on the 700 block of West Fifth Street, re-opened for business Wednesday to customers shaken by the incident shortly after 1 a.m., where 49-year-old Winona resident Ricky Darnell Waiters drove up to the bar around closing time, spoke to a group of people gathered outside, left for a short time, and then returned to fire a gun into the group, according to Winona police. A second man, Sean Patrick O’Brien, 27, also from Winona, was shot in the leg and in stable condition Wednesday. The motives for Wednesday’s shooting weren’t clear. It wasn’t known Wednesday whether either of the men knew Waiters, or had any involvement with him that night. "It's kind of an unusual thing to happen in that particular area," victim's brother Robert Hayden said. Hayden has gone from brother to caretaker after his sister, Lauren Hayden, was viciously attacked in Upper Fells Point on Friday. "She's always the one who said she never felt unsafe, threatened by anyone, so it's pretty unfathomable," Hayden said. Police said at around 1:30 a.m., Lauren Hayden and a friend were walking home from the bars in Fells Point. When they got to about the intersection of Washington and Bank streets, someone grabbed her around the waist and threw her to the ground. "In the struggle, he took my sister down to the ground by the hair and slammed her face into a car bumper and then tried to drag her across the street," Hayden said. The attacker then ripped her purse away and ran. Hayden’s brother said the injuries were very serious, sending his sister to Shock Trauma for immediate surgery. "The impact fractured her skull and her whole body is just raw, scraped from head to toe," Hayden said. - (Black-on-white) |

Father of victim wants to know why (black) sex offender was back on the street PORTLAND, OR - A local father is asking why a dangerous man was out on the street after learning the registered sex offender accused of groping his daughter in a Baskin Robbins bathroom before committing other crimes was just arrested again. Themba Kelley was supposed to face a judge on his new charges Wednesday, but that court appearance never happened. Kelley refused to leave his cell, and jail staff said they’d have to force him out, so the judge set it over for Thursday. Kelley was in court at that time after approaching a 12-year-old girl at her northeast Portland home, months after he took a plea agreement after being accused of groping a girl working at Baskin Robbins in the bathroom of the ice cream shop. He was also convicted of criminal mischief after breaking into a woman’s apartment in January of this year and picked up again Tuesday after breaking into a southeast Portland home and coming into a 16-year-old girl’s bedroom. Kelley has a long criminal record spanning 27 years and four states, and Michael Kiriazis, the father of the girl at the Baskin Robbins, wants prosecutors to do more. Kiriazis said he was told Kelley would be put away for a long time and is frustrated that not only was Kelley out on the street again but that they had no idea he’d been released. “My question is what does it take to get a guy like this off the street?” Kiriazis said. “It’s just heartbreaking how he is assaulting these teenage girls and nothing happens to him and nobody’s accountable for it. The system’s broken and I’ve lost faith.” - (Black-on-white) |
