Voices in head, balloons in stomach: (black-on-White) Murder suspect's mental health back in spotlight in trial He insisted on a diet of coconut milk and bison meat. He spoke of voices in his head, devices under his skin and a balloon inside his stomach that could burst at any moment. In the months before a grisly killing for which he is on trial, Marcus Allen Smith's mental state unraveled to the point that his mother couldn't understand his rambling diatribes, she told an El Paso County jury Wednesday. Prosecutors rested on Monday, and the case could go to the jury by the end of the week. Without denying that Smith, 25, committed the slaying, his court-appointed attorneys argue he was too disturbed to form criminal intent the night prosecutors say he strangled an 87-year-old woman before setting her body ablaze on Nov. 23, 2011. Sharply at odds with that portrait is prosecutors' depiction of him as a sadistic killer playing "games" with everyone around him in hopes of forestalling a conviction. - (Black-on-white) |

Cold-blooded murder,' sheriff says of JPSO deputy killing - black thug shot White officer three times in the back, Jerman Neveaux, 19, was resisting a body search when he fatally shot Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office deputy David Michel Jr. on Wednesday afternoon (June 22) in Harvey, Sheriff Newell Normand said at a news conference later that night. Neveaux, on probation after recently pleading guilty in New Orleans to misdemeanor possession of stolen property, told authorities he didn't want to go to jail for having a gun, Normand said. "So he killed a deputy," said the sheriff. "What do you say about that?" Michel stopped Neveaux around 12:21 p.m. near Manhattan Boulevard and Ascot Road after seeing Neveaux closely following another man, who appeared to be nervous, Normand said. JPSO investigators confirmed the other man's state of mind by speaking with him as well as his girlfriend, who the man spoke to on the phone as Neveaux followed him, Normand said. Michel intervened, told the other man to leave and attempted to search Neveaux from behind against the car, Normand said. But Neveaux "immediately flipped around and went chest to chest" with Michel, reached over Michel's back and fired a shot into the clavicle area, Normand said. They both began to fall, he said, and Michel landed on his chest. "As (Michel) was going down, Neveaux was going down with the gun and fired two shots in his back," Normand said, adding that it was "a cold-blooded murder." - (Black-on-white) |

"Knockout game" White Harrisburg man shares tale of getting knocked out HARRISBURG- Phil Narsh woke up battered and bloody on a midtown Harrisburg sidewalk early Friday. He didn't know what happened to him. It looked like he had been attacked: He had a giant goose egg on the side of his head and a broken arm. But no one saw anything. The last thing Narsh, 29, remembered was walking home alone from a downtown bar. His friends found him lying face down on the sidewalk about 1 a.m. in the 1200 block of Third Street. Narsh regained consciousness when an ambulance showed up. He later determined a small amount of cash and his phone, which had been in his pockets, was missing. Narsh didn't report the incident to police. He was still trying to piece together what happened to him, whether he could keep his job waiting tables with a broken arm and how he was going to pay his growing medical bills. Things seemed to get a lot clearer on Sunday when he heard about a similar incident involving another man who was walking home alone from a downtown wedding celebration. But that man, Steve Esworthy, didn't survive his 1:30 a.m. robbery. |

Rashaun Lloyd fatally shot after pointing gun at officers, police say Bronx, NY --Police fatally shot a man in The Bronx early Sunday when he pointed a gun at officers responding to a report of shots fired, authorities said. Cops were called to the Soundview Houses on Randall Avenue after a series of gunshots triggered the NYPD’s ShotSpotter system, which alerts police to gunfire through sound waves. When the officers arrived, they encountered Rashaun Lloyd holding a Hi-Point 9mm pistol. He pointed it at them, and they ordered him to drop it, officials said. But he aimed the muzzle at the officers instead, and three of them unloaded 31 rounds, striking the man several times, police said. He died at Jacobi Medical Center. Fugitive flees courtroom during jury deliberations A trigger-happy Brooklyn man who went AWOL during jury deliberations in his attempted-murder case was found cowering under a fire escape by cops Wednesday, authorities said. Curtis Peterson was sentenced to 40 years in prison last month on a slew of charges after he opened fire on family in Bushwick, hitting five people. But Peterson, who was out on $100,000 bail, had already fled after summations in April. Cops collared the coward after receiving a tip that he had been hiding out in a Bed-Stuy apartment on Lexington Avenue. “This defendant brazenly shot and injured five members of the same family in broad daylight,” Brooklyn District Attorney Ken Thompson said in a statement. “Like a coward, he fled when it became clear that the evidence against him was overwhelming. He will now serve the 40-year sentence he so justly deserves.” |

Four days later, her body was discovered strangled inside a garbage bag and a mile from her home on Kingston Avenue. |

(Black) Serial killer pleads guilty to DeKalb county murders - 3 homeless black men and a (White) woman DECATUR, Ga. -- In a pretrial hearing Monday, Aeman Lovel Presley, 34, pleaded guilty to two counts of felony murder. He is accused of killing four people in 2014. Monday he pleaded guilty to two felony murder counts in the deaths of Calvin Gholston and Karen Pearce in exchange for no death penalty. He was sentenced to two life sentences in prison without the possibility of parole. Before he was sentenced, the judge heard victim impact statements from Pearce family friend John Bulluck and Pearce's parents. Her parents were too elderly and frail to travel to Atlanta but a court staff member read a letter from them, saying their lives were forever changed by the loss of their daughter, a popular Cobb County hair stylist who was shot to death as she left a Decatur restaurant in December 2014. Previously, both Fulton and DeKalb county district attorneys announced their intentions to seek the death penalty against Presley. But, DeKalb County D.A. Robert James said in most of his cases, if the defendant is willing to admit guilt and take responsibility for their actions, he will agree to life in prison. Presley did so in the courtroom Monday, apologizing to the families of his victims and the citizens of Fulton and DeKalb Counties. "I'm a brother with serious issues, and I've done things I'm not proud of. I apologize and take responsibility," he said before the judge. - (Black-on-white) |
Court upholds murder conviction, throws out death penalty - for black man that shot White police officer HARTFORD, CT - The Connecticut Supreme Court has upheld the murder convictions of a man who killed a Waterbury police officer in 1992, but has overturned his death sentence because of the court's earlier abolishment of capital punishment. Justices ruled Friday on the appeal of Richard Reynolds and ordered a lower court to re-sentence Reynolds to life in prison without the possibility of release. Reynolds fatally shot Waterbury Officer Walter Williams. Reynolds' appeal said his public defenders failed to question jurors about racial biases and failed to introduce evidence that Reynolds suffers from an anti-social personality disorder. The Supreme Court abolished the death penalty last year. One death row inmate, has already been re-sentenced to life in prison. The 10 men remaining on death row also will be re-sentenced to life. - (Black-on-white) |
