Trial opens for (black) Bexar deputy who killed (an unarmed White man) man after car crash A motorist shot to death in 2013 by an off-duty Bexar County sheriff’s deputy had been heatedly arguing with his wife via text-messaging shortly before the fatal encounter, a defense attorney told a jury Tuesday as the former deputy’s murder trial started. Anthony Lamont Thomas, now 41, was wearing a uniform but was off duty and in his personal vehicle when he and Mathew Jackson, 29, were involved in a minor car crash on Aug. 31, 2013. Jackson had gotten off work at a restaurant and bar and then went to a friend’s house, where he had drinks. After that, he was driving down the highway when his car “bumped side mirrors” with Thomas’ vehicle, and both men pulled over. Thomas, a 16-year Sheriff’s Office veteran, shot and killed Jackson. Thomas told investigators he had felt threatened because Jackson ran toward him with something in his hand that looked shiny, and that he heard a gunshot. Special prosecutor Miguel Najera said in his opening argument that the evidence “does not correspond at all” to Thomas’ story, that Jackson was unarmed and “there was no justification” for the killing. - (Black-on-white) |

(Interracial) Pair used fake documents to get (illegal Nigerian) athlete into Alamance school BURLINGTON -- The Alamance County Sheriff's Office and federal investigators are looking into how an ineligible athlete was enrolled at Eastern Alamance High School and whether it's related to human trafficking. The sheriff said at least 22 students could be involved. Only two in Robeson County have been accounted for. At a news conference Tuesday morning, Sheriff Terry Johnson said Aris Lamont Hines, 37, and Brandi Kauilani Thomason, 35, both of Mebane, are charged with felony common law obstruction of justice and obtaining property by false pretense. Johnson predicted an investigation that could last for six months to a year into what he called a bigger human trafficking ring, and he asked for the public's help locating other juveniles in the case who are now missing. The investigation began earlier this month when the North Carolina High School Athletic Association stripped Eastern Alamance's football and basketball teams of a combined 28 wins and made it forfeit $19,000 in playoff gate receipts. Sheriff Johnson said investigators believe Hines and Thomason fraudulently conspired to enroll a young man who is a native of Nigeria into the school system to play two sports. Johnson said the young man got himself away from Hines and was living with another family. |
Don't lie about your porn habits, especially while running for office Porn is porn, except when it's research. That's the backbone of a curious defense made by Mike Webb, a Republican congressional candidate for Virginia's 8th District, who on Monday posted a screenshot of his desktop. The image pertained to a now irrelevant call with a staffing agency. More importantly, the politician had left two tabs open: "LAYLA RIVERA TIGHT BO..." and "IVONE SEXY AMATEUR." |

Police: Arizona man upset with daughter kills family dog in BBQ smoker GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Authorities say a Goodyear man is facing charges after killing the family dog in a barbecue smoker because he (he had smoked marijuana and) was upset with his teenage daughter's T-shirt. Goodyear police say 42-year-old Patrick Zane Thompson is jailed on suspicion of animal cruelty, assault, threats against his family and tampering with evidence. Officers were called to Thompson's family home on Saturday. Thompson became upset with a shirt that his 17-year-old daughter had because he believed it had to do with the devil. Thompson reportedly burned the shirt in a barbecue smoker parked in a side yard. When Thompson went back into the house after burning the shirt, family members told investigators he got more erratic and told his family, in front of his four minor children, that he needed to make a sacrifice of a male. According to the victims, Thompson stated it had to be either himself, his firstborn 6-year-old son or the family dog -- a small, white poodle weighing about 15 pounds. That's when the family tried to escape the home, but Thompson was still able to grab hold of the dog. Investigators say the family pleaded with Thompson not to hurt the dog. Goodyear police said that Thompson admitted to then breaking the dog's neck and strangling it until it "could not breathe." He allegedly told officers the sacrifice was not done and that he had to put the dog in a "lake of fire." He then told them that he put the dog in the heating element of the smoker, which was turned on. When officers inspected the smoker they found the dog dead inside. When officers spoke with Thompson's wife, they said she asked for her husband to be charged. Police said Thompson told officers that he had smoked marijuana earlier in the day. |

Detroit man gets 25-75 years after 2008 rape kit tested Pontiac — A Detroit man was sentenced Monday to at least 25 years in prison after an untested rape kit revealed his DNA matched the person responsible for a 2008 rape in Southfield. Alan Donnell Broadnax, 57, was sentenced to a maximum of 75 years in prison for first-degree criminal sexual conduct involving an 18-year-old Wayne County woman. Broadnax was charged in the previously unsolved rape after his DNA came up in one of 11,000 untested sexual assault kits held by Detroit Police in a warehouse. Some of them dated back 30 years. Broadnax was also sentenced as a habitual fourth offender and the judge also ordered lifetime listing on the sex offender registry and lifetime electronic monitoring should Broadnax be released from prison. The victim said she had gone to a Southfield address in March 2008 with three people where she was knocked unconscious by her attacker and sexually assaulted by a man she did not know. She was then forced to walk home to Hamtramck. While the woman immediately reported the rape to Hamtramck police, she could not remember the address of the Southfield house where the assault took place and evidence of the rape — containing Broadnax’s DNA — sat untested in a warehouse until 2009. |

Prosecutor calls black U.S. representative Chaka Fattah a thief as racketeering trial gets underway Federal prosecutors painted a picture of a comfortable, corrupt career politician who used lies and fraud to cover his tracks in transferring money and paying down his political debt, as day one of the corruption trial of U.S. Rep. Chaka Fattah opened Monday in Center City. Grinning and even chuckling at times, Fattah, an 11-term member of Congress, appeared confident in court as prosecutors laid out the charges against him. “Racketeering, wire fraud, honest services fraud, mail fraud, falsification of records, bribery, bank fraud, money laundering, conspiracy, theft … he took from taxpayers, he even stole from his own campaign,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Paul Gray said before a jury split evenly between men and women. Last month, Fattah was ousted in the Democratic primary for Pennsylvania's 2nd Congressional District seat by State Rep. Dwight Evans. |

(Black) Man who ran naked on I-71 after crashes sentenced to 10 years, banned from driving CINCINNATI – The man who caused a seven-car crash and ran naked down I-71 last August was sentenced to 10 years in prison Friday. He was also banned from driving for life. Tracy Martin, 45, of Cleveland, sped down the left shoulder of I-71 south near I-275 in Blue Ash, sideswiping four cars and rear-ending a fifth with the pickup truck he was driving, troopers said at the time. His truck then hit the median, flipped and slammed into another vehicle. Six people, including Martin, were injured in the collisions. Martin then got out of his wrecked truck and ran away. Witnesses said he ignored offers of clothes and shoes as he ran by cars on the highway. Police said it appeared he hadn’t brought any clothes with him. He ran for nearly a mile before police caught him. It took several officers, including an off-duty state trooper, to stop Martin. - (Black-on-white) |
